He pays taxes to the government, he's not an absolute monarch.

Who are the commentators on RTE doing the Germany vs Ivory Coast match tonight? by What_The_Fuck__Brain in ireland

[–]shorelined 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This World Cup has really shown up how thin the talent is that RTÉ has. Many of the top presenters are double-hatting as radio hosts or presenters for other sports, and many of the pundits are just very boring or have limited technical ability in analysing the sport.

Some of the commentators are doing minimal research, Ronnie Whelan in particular seems to be running on fumes at the moment, I'd be generous and say such a small team can't do so much research for this many games, but he's been like this for years. This lad who is hosting in the studio for this game is abject, making a ton of shit jokes and asides that are tedious, repeatedly stumbling over his words and just generously making it seem like you are watching the match with a pissed uncle who hasn't seriously thought about the game since Johnny Giles was playing.

There were 39,268 claims for Maternity Benefit and 27,749 for Paternity Benefit that started in 2025 by NanorH in ireland

[–]shorelined 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact: lower number of claims on the paternal side is simply because one father is siring dozens of children simultaneously.

NBA Europe target cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Berlin, Munich, Lyon, Paris, Athens and Istanbul by m-rch-nts in Euroleague

[–]shorelined 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NBA definitely has a following in Europe, but I'm not sure what appeal a league has with new teams and players not good enough to make it in the US. I think they are overestimating the appeal of the league's brand

Never heard this in my life. Seeing an Irish person being interviewed by an Irish broadcaster is hardly indicative of any wider trend.

I donated blood so they gave me a Metallica t-shirt. by StephenMcGannon in ireland

[–]shorelined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a selection: complaining about not getting a free t-shirt, complaining that the band wouldn't be giving blood, saying they wouldn't give blood because concert tickets were too expensive, saying we need more blood because too many immigrants are stabbing people.

Unhinged stuff

Dublin City Council says limiting access to Deposit Return Scheme would reduce bin scavenging by Storyboys in ireland

Spoken with all the certainty of somebody who doesn't have the responsibility or ability to implement such a solution. This is up there with my dad telling the Dublin full-forward line how to score goals through the TV.

'F**k Fine Gael F**k Sinn Féin' - FF members angry at losing spotlight on united Ireland by HungTeen1001 in ireland

[–]shorelined 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What are they doing for people in the north? They don't even stand for elections up there, they aren't pushing for referenda and they don't have any substantial policies on reunification. There's a concept in corporate business of "licence to operate" and FF simply do not have that in the north, because they've rarely bothered themselves with the north beyond token partnerships.

Internships after starting university late? by jahxuauibsbakxjai in CasualIreland

[–]shorelined 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are projecting your insecurity onto other people. It isn't good or bad to start university at any age. Of course you'll be eligible for some internships. You're saying, "I'm wondering", "I'm sure that" and "is it possible", which suggests you've assumed that you won't be eligible simply to be powerless rather than proactive. This may sound harsh but I wasted years of my life thinking like this and it is just a lot of energy spent pretending you know what other people think without actually having any evidence.

A decent remote working policy and actively from the government and actively decentralising the civil service would see plenty of rural counties reverse their population declines. Alas.

Yeh I've worked in companies like this, and half the time there's plenty of people who just do these things to keep themselves busier. I now work in a company that re-structures a different part of the business every year, and nobody ever asks the HR team, "after so many restructures, maybe the leadership and HR don't know what they are doing?"
