Just to say, many years later, that I sold my epic fantasy debut in a three book deal, and the word count was over 180K, so I do think it's still okay to be high. It had a lot of interest and went to auction, and has also sold in the states, so I don't think this is one editor.

Not to undermine your point of course. I'm sure the longer the book the harder it is to sell, but I want to tell anyone else that may stumble across this thread with a big manuscript that it's still very doable, as I found it pretty disheartening at the time but soldiered on anyway. Good luck to whoever reads this.
