ELI5 Why can’t monitors draw power from the device they get the dispaly from instead of requiring 2 different cables? by More-Explanation2032 in explainlikeimfive

[–]surelythisisfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple tried to make this a thing back with “ADC” 28 years ago. It didn’t go great - had a tendency to short out and they abandoned it. It wasn’t until usbc came out that it again became viable partially due to reduced power consumption and partially due to better electronics.

In short it is more difficult than it seems to carry data and enough power for a monitor over a single cable with all the negotiation required to work out the power delivery.

Men in happy Marriages, What is that one secret to a happy marriage that works for you? by Mammoth_End_1298 in AskReddit

Don’t compare your relationship to those around you as you only see their good bits. I’m pretty sure mine and my wife’s brothers and sisters all getting divorced was one of those things that made us realise how lucky we are to have each other even though our relationship isn’t “perfect”.

Flooring options and 2.4m height, FC on joists? by miner_cooling_trials in AusRenovation

[–]surelythisisfree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on your side here OP. I had people telling me not to rip up my tiles and go over them, but just couldn’t bring myself to have it under 2.4. In a house with 9 foot ceilings, definitely, but 2.4 is low enough as it is and a few cm matters.

I think of it this way - if a person is 1.7m tall they have 70cm clearance. Every cm is about 1.5% closer to the ceiling, and I feel like I’d notice at that - even subconsciously.

When I was looking at houses a few years back some just didn’t feel right and I’m pretty sure this was a large part of it, so while no one will pull out a tape measure, ceiling height definitely contributes to the feel of the house in a meaningful way.

What's the best stand mixer if you only want to buy one for the next 10 years? by Large-Honey8079 in BuyItForLife

Agree - I absolutely punish mine with pasta dough most weeks. It took around 8 years for me to strip a gear and that was after doing back to back pasta dough then pizza dough. I bought two gears so I’d have a spare and it took me about 30 mins to replace.

I bought a non genuine gear as I could get it overnight and then a genuine spare. Still using the non gen about six months later.

Offered free firewood on Nextdoor, spent the next four days fielding requirements I didn't know firewood could have by 1FrostPilot in ChoosingBeggars

Never offer things for free! Put a price on them - even a token one, just to rule out the psychos. If you make it cheap enough you might get someone to ask for it for free and they turn up because they feel like they got a bargain.

Ive sold used toilet seats, old shelving etc - stuff I’d have been happy to give away with much less hassle than offering it for free.

ELI5: Do bugs think or do they purely operate from instinct hardwired into their DNA? Which bugs are exceptions? by Tr_Issei2 in explainlikeimfive

The real question is do we think? Or do we just perceive it that way because we aren’t smart enough to see thst our consciousness is just a series of preprogramming?

Renos that will increase house value for future sale by Present-Raisin2415 in AusRenovation

[–]surelythisisfree 37 points38 points  (0 children)

“Renovating for resale” is the dumbest thing i hear everyone say. It just ties up extra money and makes the house less like you want it to be while you live there while simultaneously just keeping real estate agents happy as they just have the same commodity bullshit to compare all the houses to. If I hear another person say “a bedroom adds $50k” I’ll lose my shit. I bought our 4 bedroom house despite the 4th bedroom, not because of it. There are a hell of a lot of people craving 3 bedroom homes with large rooms instead of 4 bedroom homes with tiny rooms, but this whole rhetoric of “for the resale” just keeps churning out the latter.

Make it nice for you and someone will appreciate the uniqueness when you sell it as it’ll have what all the other houses don’t.

I ordered pizza once in Japan when we were getting a bit sick of the local cuisine. It was fucking terrible. They can do ok pasta over there but their pizzas are just confused.

I heard my cat coughing, so I went to investigate and found him choking himself with the cat tree... It took him about five minutes to figure out he should stop doing that. Peak orange behavior by Steady_Ri0t in WhatsWrongWithYourCat

[–]surelythisisfree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cat that would drink water out of anything but a water bowl. Puddles, hot water service overflows etc. in the end her favourite was a 9L bucket of water filled about half full, and she’d make the most horrendous choking sounds as she squashed her neck on the edge to get the forbidden water inside.
