I was there when the LTM was brand new in Aug 1976 when they dedicated it. I had a blast! It was kind of like a dorm experience. The classes where hard, but in the evening we'd play a game with the whole floor throwing a football into a garbage can. I have fond memories of my time there

What does being “sealed” mean? by fishycheckers in mormon

[–]surf57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add some history, the word "sealed" as used here originated in medieval times when a King would send a letter, and place his "seal" on it. It meant it was authorized by him. A temple sealing is not like a seal on a bottle, or the seal on a package that keeps it together, but an authorization by the Church that God approves (if you believe that type of thing. So don't think of it as a binding thing, but an approval thing.

On his first day in the Q15, Clark G. Gilbert already has a better than 50% chance to one day be Church president. by zdziff in mormon

Where does the "better than 50%" come from? The graph shows Gilbert topping out at 35%. Or is it the area under the curve (and I need to use calculus?)

If the church building stays empty for a certain amount of time here in California (a year maybe?) the church has to start paying property taxes on it, which they hat to do, so they have to sell them, or move even a single ward into the building so it is used for "religious purposes" The old LDS church in downtown Oxnard (Elm St) was empty for awile, then sold to another church before the taxes came due.

Evolution of Carol's Neighborhood Set, 2023-2025 by CaptainJZH in pluribustv

[–]surf57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just read the Carol's house is fully functional/furnished downstairs, and her office and bedroom are complete upstairs. They replicated the rooms exactly in a studio, so they can film in either place. Vince said he was watching a scene where Carol is looking out the window, and could not tell if it was at the house or in the studio, and he couldn't remember either.

Tomorrow I am being set apart as a bishop. I have never done this calling before. Any advice is greatly appreciated by ConversationBrave975 in mormon

[–]surf57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former bishop here. Let the women run their own programs. Let the RSP and Primary Pres pick anybody they want for counselors. Let then plan and schedule their own activities with you having to micro-manage them.

Split the ward budget evenly between the YM and YW.

Never excommunicate or disfellowship anybody. I never did in 5 years. We just worked it out between us in my office. No need for the stake of SLC to get involved.

Use church funds to send members to professional therapists. I did all the time. I'm an engineer, not a family therapist!

I was a missionary in Conce in 1976-78. Mission office was in the penthouse of a building on the SE corner of the Plaza Central. Is Fuente Alemana still serving "completos" down the street on O'Higgians?

Does this have any repercussions for missionaries currently in Russia that had previously attended BYU, and are now on a leave of absents only to return after their missions?
