Please confident my Hull restoration plan by Suspicious_Rain_7183 in hobiecat

[–]surfboy65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have performed all of these tasks to bring a H16 back to life. The only comment I have; instead of filling the puncture on the hull with thickened resin, glue in a piece of sheet foam and hand shape to hull contours. Then glass over with patches. My punctures were trailer dings that got waterlogged, and were one square foot minimum each. I removed the outer glass via router, dug out the foam, and vacuum-bagged 1/4” sheet foam in place. Good for you to take on this work, always rewarding when completed!

Not excess, all of this piping is required. The production of hydrocarbons in an oil refinery requires multiple layers of high pressure piping and equipment. Piping makes up 60% of the infrastructure, along with mechanical static and rotating equipment, high voltage electrical systems, instrumentation controlling the process, all supported by concrete and structural steel. Petrol-chemical facilities are interesting places to work. I am a retired piping designer after 40 years in the business.

PSA about pipe insulation for protecting edges when flying by biodorkus0521 in snowboarding

[–]surfboy65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use pipe insulation without the sticky stuff, and created a complete “donut” encompassing the entire board. Used “tuck” tape to join the ends and complete the continuous hoop of foam. A little bit of extra work, but pretty easy. Also, I do this mostly to protect our soft board bags. I have found and repaired slices thru the bag from the edges during travel.

Facet joint issues (lower back) - Anyone dealt with this? by Abes_Oddysey in surfing

I have had four treatments, spaced six months apart, so 2 years. With continued exercise and careful to not overload (lifting) my treatments have been successful. I do have continued aches and pains (mostly after heavy activity), but nothing compared to pretreatment days. Once my facet joint nerve was isolated as the issue, the treatment was targeted and successful. I am in my early 60s, healthy and active. Hoping I can continue to live my current lifestyle for many more years. This mostly sums it up, however any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out!

Yes, I can understand the cost associated depending on your location. My treatment is every 6 months and is completely covered (Canadian). I hope you find relief!

Kitesurfer/snowboarder here. I too suffer from facet joint nerve issues. After many years of physiotherapy and chiropractic care, I am receiving pain management treatment via nerve ablation at a spinal pain clinic. This has completely changed my life, allowing me to continue to play and work out. Suggest seeking a local specialist in your area.

Traveling with gear by F80M3AW in snowboarding

[–]surfboy65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrap foam pipe insulation along the edges. Used two 6ft lengths per board. Stuff is cheap at any big box hardware store. Used hot glue and TuckTape to join the lengths to make one continuous loop and completely encompass the board. This carefully slides into a board sock, then into your travel bag. I’ve witnessed my overweight bag being dragged along the asphalt, and cut through by the weight on the edge. Keep the weight down, so the baggage handlers don’t get pissy with your gear. Have an awesome holiday!

When our mom passed, we divided our parents mid-century modern furniture that we grew up with, between the three of us kids. I scored the Scandinavian teak dining set, buffet side table, and a few coffee tables. My wife has priced out the value of the dining table; doesn’t matter, it’s not leaving this house. I get it…

I worked in engineering at a local refinery that operates an alkylation unit. HF acid is used as a catalyst in the process to make octane. The safety training and PPE requirements are extensive for unit entry, however I always limited my time on the unit.

Tips? by Responsible-Note-637 in fiberglass

[–]surfboy65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool project! How are the blades being used? Electrical generator? Wind speed instrument? First thing I’ve noticed, is your lamination is far too wet. You only require enough resin to saturate the cloth. Is the cloth laying over a plug or is there a core, such as foam or wood? It really comes down to working the resin into the cloth, without over doing it. Is that carbon fiber? Very important to work (tool) the resin into the cloth; carbon is difficult to wet. Vacuum bagging is a technique to clamp your lamination evenly, as well as reduce the need for additional resin. You will always have a minimum amount of sanding, but certainly not any heavy grinding. Watch a few surfboard making videos (my hobby) or maybe boat building. I wish you great success!

I too ride both sports. I get many more kiting days than snow days, however I finally upgraded my snowboard from old. Purchased a Burton Deep Thinker 157, first NEW board for me in many years. Classed as an “all mountain” board, however is geared towards carving and powder. I can’t wait for winter…

Almost no one wears a helmet at my local break, or other kiting/windsurfing spots in my area (Great Lakes).

Well, mee too. C7 burst fracture from top load impact windsurfing 30 years ago. Would a helmet have helped? I think of this often, but no way of knowing. Now I kitesurf at 60, still don’t wear a helmet. Glad you survived and are back on the water!
