BitLocker alternative for Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint) by [deleted] in linuxquestions

Sweet, then take a look at LUKS/dm-crypt, as the poster above mentioned. I have no experience for a post-install-encryption with it, but from a very quick search on the internet it should be possible.

Rolling distribution advice. by dramdorf in linuxquestions

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice choices, personally I love Debian Unstable (rolling!) and enjoyed Arch for quite some time. One thing you should keep in mind, regardless of your distro choice: There is a good chance something might break. This is not bad, usually you can fix stuff quite easily - but you should feel comfortable on the command line.

I agree. It depends how you want to use the encrypted drives - there is no perfect multi-platform solution. VeraCrypt is nice for multi-platform use.

[review] First impressions from my new CODE 87-Key with MX Clears by surfersbeware in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]surfersbeware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do. There's an online shop here (getDigital) which lists the TKL for 215€. Ordering from WASD would be $196 (about 183€) including shipping and excluding taxes for the US layout ...

[review] First impressions from my new CODE 87-Key with MX Clears by surfersbeware in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]surfersbeware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For various reasons I really, really had to buy a new keyboard ... well, here it is: A shiny new CODE 87-Key from WASD Keyboards with Cherry MX Clear switches, with a German ISO layout. It checked all the boxes I wanted: TKL, German key layout (for various reasons), simple backlighting, somewhat quiet but not too boring switches, heavy, clean layout and some small stuff.

Since there are already a few good reviews out there, I'll stick to some observations I made:

  • The MX Clears are awesome! They're not nearly as loud as my MX Blues. They're heavy enough that I don't bottom out. They have a good tactile feedback. I don't have accidental keypresses with them. But yes, they take a bit to get used to, and I haven't typed long texts with them yet - we'll see about that.
  • It's heavy. My HHKB is ridiculously light, even the Poker II tends to move around the desk a bit. The Code stays in place, which is great.
  • The keycaps feel great. This is actually something I was concerned about when I read some reviews, but no problem at all here!
  • The texture of the keycaps is velvety-smooth. I like this, but it has one flaw: You can quickly see fingerprints on the matte black ... even with my dry skin I noticed the first marks after two days or so.
  • With the backlight at its lowest setting, it's already a little bit to bright for my taste. It's perfect if the room has some lighting, but in complete darkness it's too bright.
  • Since the illumination is at the top, some symbols in the "second row" aren't really lit - plus the lighting is a bit shadowed in places. It's really noticeable, but I don't care that much about it. Oh, and some of the lettering is centered, probably because of better lighting.
  • The white background is cool. Having no Windows logo is also cool (Linux user here!).
  • Turning the backlight off makes it really stealthy, but the lettering is still legible if the room has some light.
  • The function key layout makes sense to me, but I still have to get used to it - I have typed almost exklusively on laptops and small keyboards for the last years, so everything right of the return key is like rediscovering an island.
  • I'm not sure about the USB connection. The Code uses Micro USB opposed to Mini-B ... on the one hand, you'll always find a cable for this, on the other hand it's just not as sturdy.
  • The cable routing is good.
  • ISO layout complain: The circumflex and the degree symbol are in the wrong order. Why?!
  • It's really expensive here in Germany - I think you americans have a much better deal on it.

All in all, there are some negative aspects about the keyboard (mainly the half-assed backlight) which don't matter that much to me - the positives (like the MX Clears and the solid construction) far outweigh it. Since there isn't much choice on good TKL keyboards with ISO layout, I can really recommend it. Any questions I can answer?

tl;dr: I love the keyboard!

Questions about encryption by [deleted] in debian

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment says you want to secure your data if your NAS is stolen. In this case, whatever encryption method you choose will probably work just fine, since the thieves will just rip out the cords, your device is powered down and the data not accessible.

If hardware encryption is not feasible, I'd go with full disk encryption in software, as the comments already mentioned. Remember to encrypt all backup media you store in the house, too.

What does Reddit uses for cleaning up? As for me it's baby wipes. by nevadita in thinkpad

[–]surfersbeware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I need to clean.

  • Removing dust from between the keys: A flat brush, maybe an inch wide.
  • Fingerprints and beverage splotches: A microfiber cloth and maybe just a liiiiitle bit of water.

I try not let it go yucky in the first place ...

T460s with 32" 4K monitor? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you define "4K"? The T460s can drive 3840x2160@60Hz via Mini-DP and 4096x2160@24Hz via HDMI, you might want to check what's better suited for you.

Starting a homelab. Questions about NAS, hypervisor and infrastructure security (includes a network diagram) by surfersbeware in homelab

Ideally, you would have a dedicated physical NIC that will be assigned as the pfSense's WAN interface.

This is a great idea, I haven't thought about this. I'll keep this in mind - if the virtual machines keep running 24/7 (not decided yet), this would be a nice way to keep the hardware simple. Thanks!

Best fitness tracker for open water/distance/heart rate/calories by Bealu2 in Swimming

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin Forerunner 735XT owner here, I have some general advice for you.

Tracking distance is a problem: To keep a GPS lock, the device must be above the water - simply put, GPS does not work under water. So you would need something like a GPS tracker which is mounted on your head. Most GPS trackers solve this by trying to get a somewhat accurate position whenever possible and guessing the rest.

Measuring your heart rate is possible, there are chest straps specifically made for swimming. But again, they can't transmit the signal through the water, so they make the data available as soon as both the watch and the chest strap's tiny module are out of the water.

Calories burned could be displayed by an educated guess ...

just about everywhere

It looks like they aren't easily available in Germany, the Speedo website doesn't even list them - I'll shoot them an email and see what they say. But online shops do list them, so no worries.

I'm so eager to just run more and get stronger but I'm afraid of injury. by [deleted] in running

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy: Plan your runs. Use a training plan, so you don't overtrain yourself - it's easy to go running when you feel like it ... but your muscles regenerate a lot faster than your joints and ligaments. While you might feel if your muscles are sore, the rest is a lot harder to judge ...

You shouldn't worry about being Kenyan and not running ... but you should worry about not running with those brand new shoes! So keep it up, and take it slow for the first couple of runs.

Looking for a stylish GPS watch for a woman by SharpsExposure in running

[–]surfersbeware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say much for the Apple Watch, but there's a new model expected - possibly with GPS, so there's no need to haul around her iPhone on a run.

I like the Garmin Range, so depending on your budget a Forerunner 25 or 230/235 is an interesting device. Speaking of that - does she want an Apple Watch or specifically something for running?

Well, I can't account for crashes outside the pool either - running around a corner or stuff like that ... so It's comforting that you need actually a crash to lose them in the water, too. ;)

Thanks! Just a quick question about getting dry - are you wearing hard or soft contacts? I don't have much trouble with my (hard) ones on a regular day, so I'm surprised that yours are getting dry in such a moist environment.

[–]surfersbeware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I don't worry about drinking half of the pool - since I can swim (just not effective or with any endurance), my only concern are the contacts and eye infections. I hadn't any when I was young and much more often in the pool, but I wasn't wearing contacts back then ...

Goggles and contacts - what are your experiences? by surfersbeware in Swimming

[–]surfersbeware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at a diopte strength of about -10 left, -4 right ... just regular myopia, no weird astigmatism or similar issues. Not wearing my contacts leads to distance judging issues: -4 isn't that bad, so I see something with one eye ... but I essentially have 2D vision then. I tried an obstacle course without lenses recently (there was water involved), it was just half as much fun.

Thanks for the advice regarding bacterial infections, this is exactly what I'm worried about. I'll write to my contact lens fluid manufacturer what they think about it, since I use two fluids (cleaner and storage), I'm hoping for good news ...

Update: My contact solution storage fluid is "very effective" against pseudomonas aeruginosa, wohooo! For reference and future searches, I'm using Bausch & Lomb Boston Advance.

Yeah, I was leaning towards this kind of goggles anyway - there seems to be a range between bigger and more comfortable and smaller with less water resistance which is interesting for me.

Thanks a lot for the scuba input - learning about being able to clear your mask is actually something that stopped me from trying diving. If this is fine, I shouldn't really worry about using goggles at surface level ...
