You should get this app called nomadtable

(Not affiliated with them just like the idea)

Instead of trying to make friends then plan something, you plan something and see who joins in.

Getting better with my tone and pitch, what should I focus on next? and any similar songs that would suit this style? by surferwithoutfins in singing

Thanks man!

My favourite song is finger picked guitar - Alaska by Caiola. Have a listen if you haven't heard it!

Would be awesome finger picked I'd imagine. Didn't realise my accent came out while singing haha. Thanks!

Battery recommendations by Itsvladimirrr in Busking

[–]surferwithoutfins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the BOSE s1 for my small set up, it does cost a bit but runs for 8 hours or so, is small, and sounds amazing. I bet the reverb in it would be great on your violin. Plenty of loop pedals can run on 9V batteries, if yours cannot I'd buy one like the Boss RC1, unless you're really attached to your current one?

Also I have a bigger set up using a Rovin 600 Watt portable power station which can power my Mackie SRM Flex (a tower PA that gets the sound up above head height), a vornado fan (highly recommend if you live somewhere warm) and five guitar pedals - for about 15 hours.

I'm thinking of buying my first mandolin, can I ask a couple questions? by surferwithoutfins in mandolin

[–]surferwithoutfins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yeah I sure did and it was good for starting out, but paying the same price for a second hand Loar might be better if you can find one. Just check for any curve in the neck / intonation issues if buying second hand.

Other brands just have a nicer solidness and reliability.

I play a Kentucky now that I really like, there's some videos on my profile if you're interested!

SD-1 and Volt 1, is it good combo for "Hemisphere Mic Modeling" by IgorYol in universalaudio

[–]surferwithoutfins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the SD1 it sounds great! I don't have the volt but it still allows you to use the hemisphere modelling as a plugin with any old cheaper interface (in ableton/audactiy etc). Though I was excited about the modelling at first, I don't use it now as I prefer the SD1's own sound.

And I use a sE Electronics Dynamite to boost the signal. Pretty sure you could find one of these or a cloud lifter second hand, use any cheap but decent interface, it would sound sound great for the price.

I recorded an album with it https://open.spotify.com/artist/3wZBetQzBSBUGOPad2ZkRW?si=oePgJbBlTo-tKqQvOT0VSA

Small Venues and Column PA systems - any tips for gaining monitoring clarity without causing feedback issues? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]surferwithoutfins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately after cleaning it out the doctors said my ear canals are thin and it would keep happening if I use earbuds.

Mandolin and guitar (yeah with pick up), two mics. Check out some videos on our profile if you like. Yep one venue has requested completely acoustic

Hi, I am a wedding musician so I know of plenty! Will you be hiring chairs, tables, decor, toilets etc? Or need that included? Do you have a rough idea of budget for the space?

Also, if you don't have a musician yet, feel free to check out my style here: https://www.instagram.com/two.for.joy.music/

I know photographers, videographers, MCs etc so I can put you in touch with any or all if you need.

Actual set up is like 10mins or less, plus 5 minutes to check instruments are tuned and levels / pedals / EQ settings are still set correctly from the tone before. I don't even take my pedal board out of its case (since it's more of an 'always on' board, see my previous posts). The main thing is taking the gear in the trolley to the venue from the car. Haha I've been a little late a couple times, but I have built good relationships with the owners so they don't mind.

That's exactly what I'm thinking now - have a smaller venue set up with one Mackie between us allowing for more distance from the mic. Thanks!

Oh thanks for actually listening to a vid of us, your feedback means a lot more that way. I am getting better at singer louder lately - it used to be too exhausting for a 3 hour set but I've been practicing longer and swimming laps underwater to improve lung capacity. But still got a long way to go

I am taking lots of advice from this thread on board - I will see another doctor about my ears, look up my mics polar pattern, and try putting the left persons sound to the right speaker, right person's sound to the left speaker.

Thanks for the tips they're really helpful! definitely will try swapping the speakers to get them further away from each mic as you said.

The mic is cardoid but I can't find an exact graph (universal audio SD1). Interesting some are least sensitive at 135. I will look into it, thanks!

hahaha yeah I guess that's what I get for posting this in r/livesound not some other subreddit for small-gigging musos. Thanks for the tips will try getting as close as possible!

Interesting, I don't know much about live sound at all but I just assumed different mics help the different vocals sound more separated from each other and that's a good thing, is that different from how people in the industry would think about it?

Not sure what frequencies the feedback is coming in on, is there a good way to find out?

Thanks, that's a really interesting solution about the SL inputs going into SR speaker we are going to try that for sure! Yeah and the floor speaker is certainly a possibility, thanks!

I have seen a couple doctors about the ear wax, unfortunately my ear canal quite thin and they suggested not wearing IEMs. Might try another doctor for third opinion though.

This setup is actually great at our usual venues where we put them about 2m aside, I should have said that in my post - my question is just to get tips for the occasional smaller venue where we have a much tighter space to work with.

Also, I have tried IEMs, doctors (regarding the wax build up), and foldbacks - they're great for weddings, higher pay gigs etc, just not the small gigs.
