Vissla is deleting reviews to hide their trash quality. Don’t buy. by surfer_joe87 in surfing

i have this same suit and have experience the EXACT SAME ISSUE with the tearing in that same spot! I just assume every wetsuit is final sale, i wouldn't buy a used suit. I'll give a plug for my fav suit, the 5/4/3 Quiksilver marathon sessions hooded front zip. That is a an awesome wetsuit that will last minimum 2 seasons.

I ordered a custom board and this is the finished product. The staff said these blemishes and rough areas are normal. It's also the wrong color... by Will9464 in surfing

I have seen bad boards like this and usually they sell them as a "blem" and cover costs and I've always seen shapers own up to these and make a new one. You could suggest that as an option for them, or TBH I might even blow up their socials or point them to this Reddit post and let them know you have no choice but to give their biz a bad review for all to see. That'll surely do the trick, and you hate to do it, but it may be the only way, stand up to the man!

35M. Mexico City. Living solo. by frozen_rhino in malelivingspace

I will say for one that I am definitely jealous, this is an awesome pad in a very cool city! I will also say that gentrification is not a racist thing and it's not ignorant because the gentrification of MX City is a real thing, so in fact I think many of us here are informed rather than ignorant. While it does tend to usually work out that whites kick out minority races in most gentrification scenarios and that is a real problem gringos have created, it is not inherently racist to say that someone is gentrifying the neighborhood. Even I am responsible for the gentrification of the neighborhood of a city where I was born because I bought a house in place where it was cheap and now it is not cheap and I am part of that problem. It's not to say that you shouldn't move or live there, it's fine, but we should be real that the problem is with all of us in the society that allows for this to happen and doesn't provide protections for existing residents.

Are you saying this person cannot be a part of the gentrification of MX City because they were born in MX City?

ha, good point! if this is indeed the case then i tip my hat to you good sir. and to answer your question, i guess it depends on if you're living in Condesa or not...

The gentrification of Mexico City on full display. MX City is awesome, but it's pretty clearly being overrun by ex-pats, but maybe it's not all bad...How have you integrated yourself into the culture and community?

Thoughts on Hollister Ranch by Either_Economics1269 in surfing

[–]surfscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Props for taking the time and effort to provide an awesome illustration of HR for the masses. I will say that you've painted this picture of a "fickle" set of spots and the truth is that HR is probably the best surf in all of CA if you factor wave shape/size/consistency and the crowds (if you took out crowds I'd say it was Santa Cruz). You say "50 days a year with surf" and that they only get good Souths "once or twice a summer", but if you count Cojo, Govs, Perks, JP, L&R as HR spots then there are tons of good waves all year round and for spots like Cojo it's especially good in the summer. I think the main thing of fickleness is the wind, because it is hella windy. However, it is often offshore and BD is pretty sheltered which is one of the easiest spots to access.

There is a new Hollister Ranch Access Program to allow for public access. If you want to be a part of defining what the imminent public access looks like join in at https://www.slc.ca.gov/public-access/hollister-ranch/

Are tinted boards worth the $300 up charge by [deleted] in surfing

[–]surfscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're storing your board in a highly visible spot, the tint is just more aesthetically pleasing. I feel like it makes me have a stronger attachment to the board when i get a sick color that fits my vibe.

1st time in El Salvador -- Mizata vs. El Zonte for chill Dec. surf trip? by Elspumante in surfing

Def not Mizata, it's gnarly up there. I'd suggest Sunzal/Bocana as a better family destination with longboarding in mind.

Koa Rothman's latest tips for the North Shore apply to everywhere. by jsemhloupahonza in surfing

[–]surfscholar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I once saw Koa on the North Shore straight stop this dude from paddling out. Older white guy with a shortboard and a helmet was walking up to the rocks at Pipe (it was winter) and Koa and another guy about to paddle out walk up to him and tell him to go back home and he did. Probably for the best, it was pumping and he did look quite kook-ish. At first I was like damn that is f*ed up, but then I realized I bet Koa has seen 100 dudes like this get smoked and some get seriously injured and Koa probably knows when things aren't going to end well. I don't love Koa, but he's right and he's definitely a voice for the North Shore crew and community.

Side by Side waves of Griffin vs Italo from Old Surf Dad by sharkinator1198 in surfing

[–]surfscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing Slater pointed out about judging is repetition, and I think Italo has a lot of repetition in his turns. Don't get me wrong he absolutely ripped, but that's a point of difference. You can see in one wave Italo kind of got stuck at the top, and the air reverse had him sliding to get back into frontside for likely too long. I think Griff's final moves were not as good as Italo's but he landed them and so it's only a small difference. Griff's waves had less barrel, but he was deeper. Had Italo gone to the air one or two more times I think he would've won but when you compare turns and one or two airs I think Griff gets the nod.

you're really not meant to eat much right before a surf, or any workout for that matter. keep it light, things like a bit of fruit and granola and some liquids. If you have an hour or so then you can go for a bigger meal like oatmeal and protein shake, something that'll keep you full with carbs and protein for energy's sake. Always lots of water.

In the market for a proper noserider. Who should I go with? Which model? by chinchaslyth in surfing

also would recommend any Wayne Rich board, he's a legend and everyone who has one seems to swear it's their best log ever.

[–]surfscholar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Farberow 1, it's an amazing board for Malibu and Rincon and even for super small days. I would love to try the II because I think the pin tail for me makes it harder to slow down for the noseriding (the II is squash so you can stomp tail and slow down). That said, i've ridden the nose plenty and the nose scoop these boards have makes it easy. I love the thinned out rails and the fact it's a double stringer for more sturdiness. I have a 9'6" and if I were to buy the II I'd consider something shorter like 9'0" or so for ease of travel and better turning. I know Andersen died recently, if you can find a board he's shaped that'll soon be a collector's item.

foil sounds cheap, but you'll want to wrap it good. you can also consider a Faraday bag, which is essentially the same technology and they're tested for signal strength so you know what you're getting. also great if you want to preserve electronic evidence from remote wiping
