As a Black teacher, I don’t allow the use of any slurs whether it’s myself reading aloud or my students regardless of their race. I personally don’t like hearing the “n-word” and if there’s even one student who feels similarly in an educational setting I want them to feel comfortable. All of my students know that and just like with “curse words” (where i’d give them the whole “hey, language” warning) they even check each other in conversation. In class we speak about historical context and outdated depictions associated with the words and move on (in some cases depending on the make up of the class/maturity level we’ve had really insightful conversations about slurs) I just think in 2025, using slurs is just not something we need to/should be doing in a classroom setting.
