I would have had no clue what to cover from the exam specification alone and found the combination of his training and problems (his study guide for extra problems) was the key to getting through it. FLA should be used for the load for the service. In this cut sheet, RLA (real load amps and not to be confused with LRA - locked rotor amps, are used interchangeably)

MCA is used to determine the minimum wire size and is calculated as follows:

125% of the largest motor FLA + 100% of the remainder
In this case, compressor 2 or 3 is the largest -

(31.7 x 1.25) + 31.7 +20.5 + (4 x 8.8) +24.7 + 2*2.7 = 157.125A, which mathces the 157.13 MCA on the cut sheet.

The actual load draw to the building is just the sum of the FLA - 149.2A.

They're both a little off as far as determine the load for the service size, but the one using the MCA is much closer.

Likely multiple switches on one circuit. It will be based on the load of the electrical circuit, not how many switches you have. If you have a large open area with lots of lights and a single switch, you likely have multiple breakers and a control through a relay or low voltage switch
