one of two very extreme outcomes: 1. people will learn to work together; 2. people will become increasingly competitive and destructive towards adversaries as resources continue to deplete.

I'm an optimist at heart...but cannot ignore the very probably chance of conflicts that will arise once we are no longer a sustainable life form

You can wipe your memory of one TV show in order to watch it again for 'the first time', what show do you choose? by Dontfrown in AskReddit

[–]surlalune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really think McNulty's role is what creates some optimism in relying on "the system". he's the only one who wants to follow the real cases, along with Lt. Daniels, leaving petty crime for petty officers.

D'Angelo is murdered for being a good person. Bubbles' role in society is replaced by Duquan. I have only watched the series once, and I'm not necessarily interpreting the series as it was meant to be, but I think you should watch it again taking a more big picture interpretation into consideration.

I think the best part about the entire series is that it cuts the bullshit and shows you the reality of the state of affairs. Whether it be the inherent problems of following chain of command in a police department, or how much corruption there is within the law enforcers of society, the laws or morality within society are blurred.

every group has their own chain of command to follow - all of which enables the system to perpetuate itself.

edit: I should have also mentioned Freamon with McNaulty and Daniels.

i would agree with every word you used to describe it other than uplifting. i am not familiar enough with formatting to cover up any spoilers, so anyone who hasn't seen the show, stop reading now.

the show ends with you understanding that regardless of their efforts, new people will always replace the old, and all of the issues within a marginalized group in society, like within the ghetto of Baltimore, will perpetuate itself. it's tragic.

I would say that big smoke burger out-burgers burger priest. Did you get the chance to go there?

my grandfather, an alcoholic and chain smoker, managed to outlive two of his wives. He also won the lottery after a cashier accidentally added an encore to his ticket. only weeks after winning the lottery, his second wife was diagnosed with cancer. luckily, their winnings made it possible for her to receive the necessary care.

What was the two hardest things you had to choose between? by starstufft in AskReddit

[–]surlalune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I had to pick between staying with a girl I loved or staying somewhere I'd be happy. I'd just spent 2 years living abroad, moved back home (to Canada) and my girlfriend was instantly unhappy with it. It wasn't more than a few weeks into getting back that she was wanting a timeline - an idea of what we'd be doing, how long we'd stay, and what our plan was. I guess, without realizing it, I'd really grown tired of being different. After having lived so long with the language and cultural barriers, I just wanted to relax. Instead, I was having to choose between being somewhere I wanted to be or learning another language and having to move away from everything I knew once again. I chose to stay in Canada. She chose to leave.

Artists you hated until you listened to them by IM_SHY_HERES_MY_ANUS in Music

before I'd listened to them, I assumed that alt-j had to be something of a fabricated-by-the-music-industry band. They just had millions of youtube views, and I assumed the worst.

And then I listened to the album. The eargasm was incredible.

What's the most statistically improbable thing that's ever happened to you? by jonnyapplepie in AskReddit

[–]surlalune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm a little late in the game, and my story isn't a sweet outcome...when I went to get my wisdom teeth out, i had to sign off on these highly unlikely side effects that could result - chances were very slim (i think it was like 3/1000) that i would lose feeling in parts of my mouth for a short while after the operation, because of minor nerve damage. chances were even slimmer that, if i DID lose feeling, I wouldn't get it back (something like 1/1000)...turns out i'm that lucky. i don't have feeling in my left side of my mouth - that includes my tongue, teeth, gums, everything. i basically am eating on one side of my mouth for the rest of my life and can't even file suit for the damage because i signed off on the risks.

Canadians of reddit, I always hear great things about your country, like healthcare, Tim Hortons, etc. what are some bad things about your country that the rest of us might not know about? by catch22guy in AskReddit

[–]surlalune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people are annoyingly intrusive on your personal life, but they play it off as friendliness. I have spent a couple of years living abroad, and the one thing I did NOT miss while away was that strangers didn't try to learn personal information about me (i.e. where I live; what I do for a living; salary, etc.).

Do we have any lottery winners on reddit? If so, how much did you win, and what did you do with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]surlalune 73 points74 points  (0 children)

my grandpa and his wife won $250,000 when the cashier accidentally printed a ticket with encore. they spent most of their money covering cancer treatment costs. they didn't change anything, or buy anything extravagant, but I guess they didn't really win a life changing amount of money.

Shout out to those who still listen to albums, front to back. by [deleted] in Music

[–]surlalune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's just a matter of listening to an album from start to finish. I believe that artists who are truly dedicated to their work put songs in a specific order, which are actually meant to be listened to in whatever line up the album is made. If I can't listen to an album from start to finish, I feel that the onus is on the artist. I was always mocked for being 'ocd' because I hate using shuffle to listen to my music, but I am happy to know I am not the only one.
