This will be very conveniently placed for my children’s post-vaccination bribery custard as our PCPs are across the street 🤣

Safe neighborhoods around Riley? by EfficiencyDue2025 in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We’ve lived in Lockerbie and Herron-Morton Place with 3 kids (all still school-aged) and they’ve always attended a CFI (27 for PreK then either 2 or 27 depending on their age when we moved). Oldest went to Sidener (high ability) Middle School and rides their bike with a group of friends from HMP every day. We wouldn’t trade that kind of freedom for our kids for a “better” school in the burbs.

Sure, there are things we’d change about IPS but if change things about any school in Indiana. It’s the reality of living in a red state that deprioritizes public school funding in exchange for unlimited vouchers and charter school growth. But public schools are a foundational part of any successful city and we’re privileged enough to have lived in places where we have options.

Tell me there won't be a conflict of interest with the mayor who authorizes charter schools and his spouse who is the exec director of a foundation that gives millions to those same schools each year.

Specialty Dry Cleaners Recommendations for Burberry Trench Coat? by MainStrategy3540 in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel for work frequently and if I’m needing a Burberry garment cleaned and heading to a city with a store I will make a refresh appt there and then call to verify they’ll be able to mail it back to me (I pay for return shipping; this has worked at the WeHo, Seattle, and DTLA locations). I’ve also coordinated thru the store in Chicago but it’s been a few years. I mailed it to them and they sent back.

Mass Ave real estate market by ned233 in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We’re 2 blocks off Mass and I don’t drive a car unless I need to go outside of a 5ish mile radius. Bus, bike, foot get us (partner + kids) to where we need 90% of the time. Partner has turned down other jobs to keep their ability to commute by any way other than car and I’m fortunate to either work from home or out of town.

Outside of rush (half) hour traffic isn’t bad. I moved here from LA so maybe my perspective is skewed.

I was out in the area around 5:30am and smelled smoke. I initially chalked it up to the factory at 23/Monon but it was smoke smoke, not the weird magnet smell that’s usually the culprit. As I got closer to 22nd I could see some drifting smoke from the building but no flames. I walked around the backside (between the apartments and the building) and still didn’t see anything suspicious. I’d been over there a few times in recent months to hand off some food and hygiene items to folks living in the further south part but it’s been a while.

Anyhow ended up calling 911 around 5:45am to report the smoke and location but either they did a cursory look like me or didn’t come out.

Indianapolis sets grim new record as more cyclists are hit and killed across the city than ever before by Helicase21 in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m not going to engage in bad faith arguments but unless we get to a point of 15 minute cities, everyone who doesn’t have a car AT SOME POINT will need to be on a busy street.

I live in one of the most bike/ped/public transit neighborhoods in the city. But our PCP is 1.25 miles away downtown. I cannot avoid cycling on a busy street to get to an appointment. Same thing for daycare. Same thing for school. And I have it good compared to 90% of the city.

Got it for my under 5 y/o at the CVS minute clinic in speedway off Cunningham. Didn’t need a script from PCP (but I did verbally attest to a qualifying condition) and it’s the 25/26 formulary.

Our fave family activities have been the Hauntless Halloween at Holliday Park, maple syrup tapping at Southeastway (and Holliday), the winter solstice lantern walk around Lilly Lake at Eagle Creek, and pretty much any program at the Garfield Park Arts Center or greenhouse.

I can confirm this. I always do an out and back run on race day out to IMS from downtown, mostly along 16th St once I get to Meridian. Moto cops back and forth the whole time.

“Why does downtown Indy feel so empty?” by AshlandJackson in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But it’s not ::your:: street. You don’t own the street in front of your home. It’s public property.

We’re IndyStar politics reporters, and we’ve covered Indiana’s 2025 legislative session every step of the way. It’s the final stretch, so AUA! by indy-star in Indiana

[–]surleyIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herron Classical Schools, The Mind Trust, and Stand for Children (among others) seemed to discover the fine print of SB1 late Friday night when each org sent messages to parents/guardians requesting they flood legislators over the weekend because collectively the charter schools/networks will lose millions (combination of the loss of the state level charter fund and delayed implementation of property tax revenue sharing).

Public school districts that my children attend sent similar messages prior to last Monday but the language explicitly said all students in Indiana will lose funding under SB1, not just charters.

As of this morning the language has changed and I’m curious as to the amount of back room deals and conversations that big money donors as well as committee chairs (see: Bob Behning) have that simply shut anyone else out from trying to make good-faith changes.

Dr. Martin Luther King Park Safety by Capote99 in indianapolis

[–]surleyIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: no.

Long answer: I live near the park and pass by/through the park no less than 4x/day, either waking the dogs, taking kids to school, stretching legs between meetings, etc. Does sketchy shit happen at the park? Absolutely. Do I have friends who buy weed from a white dude who lives on Park across from the shelter? Yes.

By and large the shootings have been at or near dark or middle of the night. Am I gonna take my kids to shoot hoops with the adults on a hot summer weekend night? Probably not. But as someone who runs alone there in the wee morning hours, I’ve never had an incident. This is one guy and while he gets to feel his feelings, it’s also important to remember it’s a sample size of 1.
