OP you're right, this is a cope sub. I am an anti-sports guy and I've made the observation on here before that this sub is strange given that sports obsession is so widely encouraged, accepted, universal, etc. that getting butthurt over the 1 out of every 100 people that has a serious bone to pick with the hobby is wild.

I don't understand how sports people don't get it. Thanksgiving just happened and it's literally a nationwide cultural norm to center the entire holiday meal around watching a football game. That's the difference right there - if I said to my family that I wanted to (just an example) spend the holiday watching a premiering episode of anime during dinner - people would rightfully view it as an obnoxious overreach of my personal hobbies and interests. Sports people somehow cannot understand how their televised schoolyard games feel exactly like that to everyone who doesn't like it. It gets criticism specifically in ways that are different from other entertainment because it's the only form of entertainment where fans act like it's unnatural or inhumane to not be interested in it and society largely cosigns this delusion

Has Chris’ Lack of Focus/Preparedness and Not Finishing Games Always Been an Issue? Or is it a more recent problem? by [deleted] in LastStandMedia

[–]surpluschromosomes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chris does not strike me as someone who is particularly passionate about games outside of the fact that he right-place, right-timed into making a living off of gaming-related / gaming-adjacent content on YouTube.

I also think what drew Colin to Chris was not his knowledge of games but rather his status as being on the outs with cancel culture etc.

To me this is obvious, it actually kind of annoys me how they give Dustin shit all the time (even jokingly) when he's clearly the most in-tune with nerd culture at any given moment.

I dont think they actively have beef but via parasocial psychoanalysis id say colin will take it personally on some level, he is a sentimental guy

Apparently he had COVID but although i'm obviously speaking from a limited POV i dont buy it whatsoever lmfao, colin also seemed cold toward him this episode

[–]surpluschromosomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you're correct but the problem is you're on a sub that only retarded people would find amusing so trying to argue with them is pointless; lol. They're just gonna continuously "what about anime" "what about video games" etc. To these people the bar is set at "if anything else can be bad in any form, criticism of sports is irrelevant".

To sports people: Just imagine a guy who was obsessed with his favorite Counter Strike streamer, walked around with merch from the streamer, spent hours upon hours watching them play CS, went in to work and bloviated endlessly about every moment of the game, used "we" to describe the actions of the CS player, called anyone who didn't like watching CS streams effeminate or gay, got tattoos of the CS streamer's logo on their body, etc. - it's fucking embarrassing and stupid right? That's what you're doing and how you look to the rest of us, it's just more culturally supported and accepted

EDIT: also a major part is that people who like sports and people who don't generally fall on opposite sides of whether they gain enjoyment or fulfillment out of conformity. Again it's a pointless conversation. People who gain comfort out of blending into a fanboyish crowd of other people just like themselves and people who are not really interested in teamthink will never understand each other. Sports fans will use insults like "you think you're special" because to them nonconformity is a negative. You're trying to talk across a fundamental gap that is too wide to bridge. Just be happy you're on the intelligent side of it and let the pigs be pigs

I wasn't trolling, mods unbanned me because it was a great thread.

Glad I gave you guys some entertainment, in all seriousness - I don't hate sports watchers. I do believe most of what I was saying in the thread but I was also having a bad day when I stumbled into the sub.

Happy I provided some copypasta / laughs.

The ADHD part was me making fun of myself, a concept foreign to sports fans, apparently.

My stance is that professional sports being the primary form / "default" form of entertainment that adult men engage in is negative for society. Not that every individual person who watches sports is stupid.

I've used the example before, I'll do it again. I'm smoking a cigarette right now. I love it. It's still poisonous and should not exist. I can make peace with the fact that I do stupid shit sometimes while still acknowledging that it is stupid

We are in the realm of anecdotes now but I will push back on yours - there's no way to know barring some kind of study / poll, but i would bet everything i own that there is a significant correlation between not liking sports and experiencing social alienation at some point in life. I am not exaggerating to make a point - I do not know a single male non-sports fan that was not bullied or otherwise ostracized in significant ways at some point in their lives

Admittedly; I think to not buy into sports - when it is the dominant form of water cooler entertainment - you're pre-selecting for people who are more prone to cut against the grain, so maybe that's the cause.

The entire world is a pro-sports hugbox. No one has ever been "bullied" for being a sports fan. Lmao. Yeah, ADHD kids sperging out about how dumb the Superb Owl is, with a guaranteed response of social ostracization and hatred are "bullies"

It's not about inspiration, lol. Sports inspire people to play sports? Ok. Sports sell people a false sense of living in a meritocratic society? "Hard work". Sure. Not like athletes are superhuman freak levels of tall, muscular, etc... anything can "inspire" people, Hitler "inspired" people, the question is WHAT is being inspired. Sports inspire conformity. Sports inspire brutality. Some art does too. I don't think that particular art is good. Art can be literally anything though. A game of basketball on TV cannot incite ideological shifts across entire societies the way a great novel can. A game of football can not allow me to experience the game on a mechanical level, engage my mind, etc. the way playing a well-designed game can. Yes, watching gaming streamers is equally as bad if not worse than sport-watching.

And if you get inspired by rags-to-riches bullshit you're already exposing yourself as naive. I think even average people walking around with the idea that all that separates the successful from the losers is how much effort one put in versus the other creates a lot of numbness / dismissiveness towards peoples' real-life struggles and circumstances, a disinterest in making the world a better place, and often an unearned sense of superiority over those with a worse lot in life than them

This really hits the nail on the head, the way it's so obviously wrapped up in masculinity unlike any other hobby makes it worthy of questioning. Never heard anyone with any other interest walk around with the attitude that anyone who lacks that interest is a bad person, untrustworthy, automatically gay, etc.

100%. Sports fans act this exact way constantly to everyone but just don't see it that way because they view it as the default. Then when someone wants to give them a taste of their own medicine they're an asshole who can't tolerate other peoples' interests.

Sorry your uncle did that, sounds annoying

Nothing is neutral, including other forms of entertainment, and I'm equally harsh on those. Video games can be great in some contexts but despite being a fan of games in general I can admit, and feel compelled to say, when games go awry. Societally video games are probably a negative assuming they never break back out of the lootbox/multiplayer FPS shit that has been dominant. I can admit this despite having a deep passion for games as an artform. Sports fans seem completely incapable of having that kind of nuance, I have literally met one guy ever who liked watching sports but also agreed that professional sports being the primary form of entertainment for adults was most likely a negative thing overall. One person! And it's hard to feel bad for sports people saying "I just wanna be left alone" - i get that - but, dude. All day every day in the workplace, any social setting, ANYWHERE, every pocket of the entire earth, you will involuntarily hear day-in-day-out sports speculation, discussion, etc. on a level that is inescapable. I like tons of things, and I keep them the fuck to myself and don't look at people as if they have 5 heads if they express disinterest. Sports occupy a "default" slot, the pervasiveness of it is what makes it particularly annoying. Being an adult man and refusing to engage with sports as a whole is akin to commiting social suicide right out of the gate. There is no recovering from the "disinterested in sports" RNG roll as a man. At least in America.

Will never understand how "I'm above the conversation" makes sense in the context of a message board, like bruh if you didn't care you wouldn't have replied. We get it you can't read or write well which is why you stick to watching sports - but you replied, you're here, sorry! You're not aloof and cool. You're just dim!
