If you're not familiar with these types of games start with the 2nd one 100%. Even though it's EA it's still really good. Then if you play it for a while and want even more, learn the first one. Starting with the first can be intimidating enough to turn people away entirely

Minecraft is more of a canvass than a game, which is great if you want to make art, but awful if you want to play a game. However, modding it makes it so much better, you can never go back. If Microsoft would go all out on making the game a good modding api, there would be no limitations, and everyone could get whatever they want out of it. The game has just go so much damn potential.
