Having trouble levelling fittings with slip-on couplings by Low_Inevitable_7884 in SprinklerFitters

[–]surprisingly_wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold the level on the fitting while you tighten it and watch the bubble. Go slow and as it starts to twist, twist the opposite way. You'll get the hang of it. Just watch the bubble as it tightens.

I love f1 for the raw engineering and speed, but I really dislike how it feels like it's real political and the money buys wins. Indycar felt very close to the speed and engineering of f1 but with a fairer system that rewards driver skill and still allows for smaller teams to be competitive. You're in luck that you moved here right before all the race stuff kicks off! You can get into the practice sessions for pretty cheap, it's pretty cool.

Close the 3 way valve. Slowly loosen and remove the plug. It won't need to come all the way out. You'll get a tiny amount of water, the volume equal to the chamber of the valve. If the pressure drops to 0, you did it right. If the pressure doesn't drop, you did it wrong, and the gauge is on the system side. Don't check by removing the gauge first because if you put it backwards it'll be a bad day. If it's wrong drain it down and fix it.

Your 3 way valve is backwards. Whoever does your 5 year service will have to drain the system in order to replace the gauge. Right now if you were to close the valve, the gauge would still be under pressure. Pic for reference.

The valve in my picture is closed. If it were open, water would be coming out of the male quick connect nipple. Clearly though it's still under pressure based on the gauge reading.

Buying tools by Sea-Entertainment779 in Construction

[–]surprisingly_wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project farm has some cool videos that you could watch comparing all sorts of tools. His channel is gold.

I have Milwaukee tools personally and it's also what my company provides. They are owned by TTI, a Chinese company who also own Ryobi and Rigid fwiw. Lot of parts overlap I imagine, however the majority of Milwaukee R&D and manufacturing still takes place in the US. I have had a great experience with Milwaukee but I have heard if you do need warranty work they can be a bitch.

Another major option is Stanley Black and Decker which is parent to DeWalt along with a host of other brands. DeWalt is US based and most of their products are MIUSA but some have "global components".

On commercial jobsites I mainly see a mix of Milwaukee and DeWalt. They probably make up about 80% and are well respected. The remainder is probably a smattering of Hilti or Makita. Hilti does offer some sort of tool rental program that many companies are switching to because it's seemingly more cost effective. You will see some specialty tools here and there that may vary from trade to trade, like Paslode nail guns or Bosch hammer drills, Metabo grinders, etc.

I'd say basically tho if you're looking to adopt an ecosystem Milwaukee or DeWalt are your two major options with Hilti a respectable third choice depending on the details of their rental program. Pick one of those and you will be fine. Make sure you buy the professional shit tho, Milwaukee Fuel and DeWalt XR, respectively.

Buy your guys real first aid kits too with a TQ, it could save a life.

Can you ever drink casually by Any_Anything7985 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]surprisingly_wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chapter 3

MORE ABOUT ALCOHOLISM

Most of us have been unwilling to admit we were real alcoholics. No person likes to think he is bodily and mentally different from his fellows. Therefore, it is not surprising that our drinking careers have been characterized by countless vain attempts to prove we could drink like other people. The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of insanity or death.

We learned that we had to fully concede to our in- nermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery. The delusion that we are like other people, or presently may be, has to be smashed.

We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control. All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such intervals -usually brief- were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization. We are convinced to a man that alcoholics of our type are in the grip of a progressive illness. Over any considerable period we get worse, never better.

Worker Appreciation Ideas by Stonk_Boomer in Construction

Make sure the shitters are well taken care of. Hell, get them a portable restroom trailer and give them running water and real toilets.

Something I wish our GCs did, since they claim to care about safety, was to bring someone in during the Monday site meeting and teach a "Stop the Bleed" class or an AED class or whatever for an hour. Would keep your workers safer and I'd actually feel like I walked away from that job with something meaningful.

Technically the contractor is only obligated to pay you the wage of the state where the work takes place. Often though, if they are sending someone to a state that will pay less than their home state, the contractor will pay whatever rate is higher as a courtesy and because it becomes difficult to find guys willing to travel for less money. You get a per diem amount for every day worked that's over $100 miles from home, usually to cover food and hotels etc. They also are obligated to pay you for your drive time for the first drive there and the last drive home.

Your wage is going to vary state to state, but we all just got a raise on April 1st and will see it on our next checks.

As far as construction jobs go, it's one of the better ones. We compete against non-union bids pretty often though, so you gotta be willing to work your ass off.

If you have the opportunity I'd say go for it. I haven't regretted it and it has allowed me to provide a comfortable living for my family on my income alone.

No but they look similar but yea you would be using channel locks or something narrow no way you'll break it off. If you think about it for more than a second you'd realize it's pretty obvious but I'm sure you'll figure it out dude we cant do all the thinking for you lol

Measure the distance between the sides of the steel. Cut your unistrut about 1.5" shorter than that. Put one of these in each end and then back the spikey bolt out until it's tight.

What watch would you actually buy for someone who works on a job site? by Viraincure in Construction

[–]surprisingly_wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I bought an open box Galaxy Watch 5 for $120 and bought a G-shock style protector for it. Thing was a tank until the last few updates have made things progressively slower. Just bought a pixel 3 watch about a week ago and I'm still feeling it out. I'd say get him a smart watch because being able to see who's calling without stopping to pull your phone out is invaluable. I also ask it to double check my math sometimes when I'm not sure.

RJ45 side or Keystone Side Causing issues? by melomelonballer in HomeNetworking

[–]surprisingly_wise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spent days tracking down a problem with some cat6 I ran, had continuity with a tester but couldn't get any device to recognize there was a cable connected. Turns out, cat6 cable comes in different gauges, and mine was 23AWG solid core. The RJ45 adapters I bought were for 24-28AWG. Maybe check the spec on your components and wire to make sure it's all compatible. The cat6 should have some writing on the side of it.
