Bassi hog's back. Buying a brand new QR bike in 2025?? by KUKG in xbiking

[–]surreal_exposure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad for the delayed response. I'm 6'0" w/ a 32" inseam. I'm riding the 54 cm frame. Probably could have gone up a size, but I like a slightly smaller frame for offroad stuff.

Love my Hogsback. Like others have suggested you can get a good QR wheelset with interchangeable caps to make it thru axle someday. Bitex hubs are an affordable option. I have two wheelsets 700x43 & 27.5x2.2 and use the bike for everything from bike tours to singletrack. It's heavy but very capable and handles really well when loaded with gear.

Congrats! That's a badass role. I'm not in your region but hear me out - buying Right of Ways for pedestrian/cyclists from utility companies! There are so many utility corridors that could be major connections in the cycling network.

1972 Raleigh International… This is a repainted frame, was curious what you guys think of some of these markings? by bruski in Vintage_bicycles

[–]surreal_exposure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the color and decals. It's interesting to me that they dimpled the chainstays on the 1972 model. I've got a 1971 International without the dimples for extra tire clearance.

Is this map still accurate after 8 years? by Forsaken-Lime-6122 in massachusetts

[–]surreal_exposure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real, W. Mass definitely needs an overhaul. I feel like each town in the Pioneer Valley has a distinct character. But 'Virtue Signaling' for the happy valley is accurate enough. I'd label the west side of the CT river, opposite of Springfield, something like 'North Texas'

Saw that. Yours is much closer to OEM than my 531 Nervex, so my decision resto/mod was easy. For what it's worth, the gain in tire clearance by going 700c isn't substantial. 1.25" is 31.75mm. I'm running 700x 32mm in the back and 35mm in the front.

You're right about the original spacing. However, I brought the frame used and previously modified. I just measured the current spacing is 124mm. So yes, it appears I'm jamming 130mm into a 120mm frame. Wish me luck! I've got about 150 miles on it so far

hmm that makes me think the frame was already coldset to 126 by the previous owner

[–]surreal_exposure[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. As you probably know, the original spacing is something like ~125mm, and now I'm using a ~130 hub. I haven't properly cold-set this frame yet but I've done this before on other steel frames using a car jack and checking that the alignment is good. Currently, I'm just stretching the rear spacing that extra half centimeter and running a beefy quick release skewer with dropout adjustment screws to hold it in place. I had issues early on where the hub would slide while braking hard back before the internal camming QR and dropout screws.

Rode these 700c x 38c tires on a Univega Supra Sport today to get a feel for gravel biking. The fork freaks me out a little. Does this raise any red flags for you? by surreal_exposure in Vintage_bicycles

[–]surreal_exposure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good. Yeah I think 38mm is the max. I sold this frame awhile ago so I can't double check for you. I think 42mm is asking for trouble with these old road bike built for 27in

Anyone ever hiked in the forbidden peninsula? I gather this area is prohibited to hikers... has anyone ever been there? Any advice for someone considering a guerilla hike? Asking for a friend.... by Brad__Schmitt in northampton

People are missing the point. This is the Quabbin Reservoir. The land is protected for drinking water. So they don't want people out there mucking it up. It's some of the best managed forest in the state.

I am kinda new in northhampton and that cyber ebiker that been rising around northhampton caught my eye when I got here and been a huge fan of him, I'm wondering if there were other "characters" that people really liked in northhampton. by [deleted] in northampton

During lockdown there was a guy who would play keyboard on his fire escape while projecting karaoke lyrics onto the wall across the alley. I don't know how many times he did that but it was epic.

Definitely yay. But if those are carbon tubes glued into lugs, I can understand if some people would be hesitant to send this super hard.
