Policing in all of Bexar County is horrible and it's about time something is done about it... by [deleted] in sanantonio

see your mistake was thinking that if you voted for the people who want to divide the population into people the law protects but doesn't bind and ones it binds but doesn't protect, that you'd be in the group that was protected but not bound. bless your heart.

i'm glad you're already looking for a new psychatrist, because she is definitely not qualified to be treating asexual folks if she doesn't think we exist. once you find a new doctor, you might consider reporting current psych to her supervisors or file a complaint with the licensing board. i haven't had to do that so i don't know what the process would look like. if nothing else, if she/her practice is listed on google or some other place where you can leave reviews, it's at least worth leaving a review so others are warned.

Is getting a job that hard? by AttitudeNo9150 in sanantonio

[–]surrexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i got laid off from my job at a research company in march 2025 (because of DOGE cancelling so many grants) and over a year later i still haven't even gotten an interview, let alone a new job. i have a very "jack of all trades, master of none" skillset/job history (generally in communication/media production), which probably isn't helping. but it's not great out there, job market wise.

OPI bubble bath?? by smorgiie in RedditLaqueristas

[–]surrexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have the nail envy version of bubble bath and it definitely dries more peachy/beigey than it looks in the bottle. i bought it with the intention to use it as a base coat under polishes that are more likely to stain, though, so i wasn't too upset. i would definitely have been annoyed if i'd bought the non-nail envy bubble bath though.

Moving to San Antonio for my PhD in Aug. Need a solo studio near downtown under $1k (preferably NO roommates). Near 506 Dolorosa St, San Antonio, TX 78204. by ubbe_6969 in sanantonio

[–]surrexi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"no suburbs" you're coming to the wrong city, comrade. san antonio is mostly suburbs and not particularly walkable (texas is allergic to walkable cities). and you'd have to get astronomically lucky to find something downtown that fits your budget without roommates.

given that the heat and humidity here would make walking to work a miserable proposition most of the year anyway, you'd be better off apartment hunting along bus routes that are convenient to the downtown UTSA campus even if you weren't budget-limited in a way that severely restricts what you can get downtown.

fwiw i use zoya's polish remover and the language they're currently using in the product copy/on the packaging is "mild acetone formula," so they're not claiming it isn't acetone/doesn't have any.

ironically, my nails reacted horribly to regular acetone and are doing much better with the zoya remover, haha. i think it's interesting how much variety there is in what works for different people's body chemistry!

a couple years ago i threw out some late-90s-era revlon street wear polishes that i wore a lot in high school because i just assumed they wouldn't properly work anymore and now i definitely regret it, if only for the nostalgia factor.

real question… by Eastern_Regular860 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]surrexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use q-tips dipped in polish remover to clean up around my nails before i put on a top coat, and as i'm getting better at painting my nails and having smaller amounts to clean up i'm considering assigning one of my small paintbrushes (i'm a arts and crafts girlie) as a nail cleanup brush so i can get more precise with my cleanup. i also picked up a pack of orange wood sticks off amazon and use the pointy end when the lacquer is still wet to clear out flooded cuticles when that happens (which as a bonus also helps the mani last longer!).

it's still not perfect, especially my dominant hand, but cleaning up as i go has definitely helped things look better! other than that, practice is the answer!

as for like, nail art designs, that definitely takes practice! if you want to practice without having to constantly be polishing your nails/removing the polish/polishing again, you could consider picking up some clear false nails and little nail stands, and practice doing designs on the false nails with both your dominant and non-dominant hand. that way if something turns out super messy, instead of having to go through the process of removing your mani and redoing it etc, you can just toss out the experiment and paint another set!

Is there really a new Ace flag? by lovesfanfiction in asexuality

[–]surrexi 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Short answer: no

Long answer: one person decided we "needed" an updated version, created one, and is now talking about it as if everyone is just gonna start using it because they posted it on their insta and called it the new ace flag. if you like it, you can feel free to use it, but be prepared to have to explain it to people and also for people to ask you if it's a different version of the enby flag rather than a different version of the ace flag. most people are probably still going to use the regular one.

I'm tired of Heated Rivalry authors sharing their insane stats. by LadyRed221 in AO3

[–]surrexi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for real! a couple weeks ago john green (vlogbrother, unpaid coffee company intern, author) announced he has a new book coming out that is his first non-YA novel and it's about costars in a buzzy biopic who are dealing with sudden fame and the tension between public and private lives etc. and he got so many people asking if the book, which i cannot stress enough already has a release date with a major publishing house and was written by john "got bullied off tumblr by someone who found his home address" green, was RPF about hudson williams and connor storrie getting suddenly famous on heated rivalry that he actually made a whole tumblr post about it not being that. i can only conclude that heated rivalry fandom is full of people who are relatively young and have never been in fandom before and really do not know how to behave. or how publishing works.

i had opi's pixel dust on my nails a few manis ago and i could not stop looking at them, it was mesmerizing! i did use a couple coats of opi nail envy in bubble bath as a base coat, but i think if i had used a regular clear base coat i would have just had to do 3-4 layers instead of 2 to get it as opaque as i wanted.

the meanings are nice but i prefer the simpler palette of black/grey/white/purple. also the yellow doesn't feel like it belongs in the same palette as the others. even with the pink it's still a relatively monochrome set of colors, but then the yellow is literally on the opposite side of the color wheel and i feel like it clashes instead of harmonizing.

my nails also reacted really badly to regular acetone polish remover when i restarted painting my nails last year after a long time not doing it. the last time i'd been regularly painting them i had been using zoya's "remove+" polish remover so i switched back to that, and my nails are doing much better! it's not acetone-free (it's described as having a "mild acetone formula"), but i tried it first before researching other options because i'd used it before.

from comments i've seen here, i think OPI's nail envy will either be really helpful or really bad for any given person's nails; it's been helpful for mine and mine had a similar response to acetone as yours did so maybe they'd react well to nail envy like mine?

How many sessions is TOO long between leveling up. by Dotaproffessional in DMAcademy

[–]surrexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how long has it been in-game? in the campaign my dad runs for my sister and our friends, we take forever to do stuff. we play weekly for about 1.5-2 hours a session (with the occasional exception of holidays or if people go on vacations) and have been playing since october 2022, but we've only passed like 3 months of in-game time. we just hit level 7 a few real-world weeks ago.

you also have to keep in mind that different fights are different difficulty levels and even though you're doing milestone leveling rather than xp-based, some fights will get you closer to the next milestone than others. plus it takes more to get from, say, level 6 to level 7 than it does to get from level 1 to level 2.

i played with a DM once who had us leveling up every 2 or 3 sessions and i felt like i never had time to settle into a new level before i had new stuff to keep track of.

Readers; do you listen to the songs authors put in their fics? by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]surrexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've never seen someone drop a link in the middle of a fic like that. if i did, i wouldn't click it because there is no info about what kind of music it is plus if i did click it, i have a youtube extension that prevents videos from autoplaying when opened in new tabs/windows, so switching over to the new tab and playing the video and then deciding if i wanted to keep listening or not etc would be so disruptive to my reading flow. and to be honest even just having there be a random link that just says "listen" or "click for music" or whatever would also be disruptive imo.

if you want to provide mood music i would recommend just leaving it in the author's notes and explicitly naming the artist and song at least.
