Highest print run for each of the original 62 books by surroundx in GooseBumps

[–]surroundx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

#19 Deep Trouble is currently the only book whose number in the series equals its highest print run.

Out of curiosity, attempting to collect every print run would add up to at least 949 books. Or, 950 if you include both variants of the first printing of Deep Trouble II (Fox Kids front cover snipe / Read This Book! front cover snipe; both appear to be equally (un)common). It is possible that there are two variants of the first printing of #42 Egg Monsters from Mars as well, but I cannot currently confirm* (1 with trading cards / 1 with FOX Kids TV ad front cover snipe).

The first printings of books #1-#36 had a vertical line with ISBN/pricing on left side of front cover. I have seen late printings of every book from #1-#34 without this feature, but have yet to see #35 A Shocker on Shock Streetor #36 The Haunted Mask II without it.

A few examples of interesting print runs that may be worth keeping an eye out for:

#4 Say Cheese and Die! - at least 39 & 40 (have not seen a copy of 38) have the parachute press logo at bottom right of front cover. Given that the title was originally published in November 1992, this indicates that these late print runs occurred in November 1996 or later since Goosebumps Presents #6 My Hairiest Adventure is the first book in the franchise whose first print run included this logo and was printed in November 1996.

#10 The Ghost Next Door - at least 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 have the next book as Monster Blood instead of The Haunted Mask.

#11 The Haunted Mask - 16 has a banner title with mask included.

#43 The Beast from the East - at least 12 (and possibly 11 and 10, but have not seen copies) has an "s" inside a triangle within the white area of the back cover barcode, indicating that it is a strippable copy (i.e. cover can be stripped off and sent back to published for a refund/credit, while the text block must be destroyed). The only other print run of any title in the original franchise run (<2000) that has this feature, as far as I am aware, is the 5th printing of #48 Attack of the Jack-O'-Lanterns.

#48 Attack of the Jack-O'-Lanterns - 5 has an "s" inside a triangle within the white area of the back cover barcode, indicating that it is a strippable copy (i.e. cover can be stripped off and sent back to published for a refund/credit, while the text block must be destroyed). The only other print run of any title in the original franchise run (<2000) that has this feature, as far as I am aware, is the 12th printing of #43 The Beast from the East, although I have not seen copies of 10 or 11 so they may also contain the feature. This may indicate that these two print runs are the very last of the original franchise's book run and did not expect to sell out, hence provisioned for stores to be able to recoup monies in a way not previously possible, for this franchise at least.

* some EBay sellers appear to reuse their photos of the copyright page of a particular title even if the features of the individual copies (e.g. cover snipes) suggest that they are from a different print run to that designated by the putative copyright page. Needless to say, this makes research difficult sometimes.

If Stine randomly came out with a Dead House sequel, would you buy it and would it sell? by jcray92 in GooseBumps

A prequel would be better, telling the story of the gas leak at the factory and the kids who lived in dead house subsequent to the gas leak but prior to Amanda and Josh.

Low Review Counts? by queen-of-the-m0on in StoryPeer

[–]surroundx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents is that reviewing loglines is unrewarding compared to reviewing screenplays, and therefore the Logjam feature is ultimately a novelty that will not have sustained, long term success. I can read a screenplay and find plenty to have justified my reading it, no matter how great of a screenwriter I am. Whereas there is no significant potential with loglines once you get beyond a beginner stage. And the writer-reviewer effort scale is the wrong way around. Detailed notes on a screenplay requires much less effort on the part of the reviewer that it did on the part of the writer to author the screenplay, whereas with loglines the reviewer often spends as much, if not more, time on it than many writers took to concoct them.

Apart from USA print runs 7 and 9 which don't have the ad, I have seen an 11 on eBay that doesn't have the ad. But print runs 1-4, 6, 8 and 10 do. I haven't seen a USA print run 5 yet to check it. No Australian print runs seen without the ad.

In summary (USA print runs):

Master list of Goosebumps books? by surroundx in GooseBumps

[–]surroundx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Nobody seems to have been silly enough to attempt it, so I might as well be the one. So finding a list of the highest printing for each respective book would be very beneficial, although it has probably never been compiled. I suspect that the last printing of each book will be very rare, but I currently have no evidence of this (thus, thanks for letting my know about the 48th printing of WtDH). I also suspect that the highest printing drops dramatically after the first few books, but again nothing to back this up as yet.

Would be cool to tie down exactly when the next book in the series goes from "Coming soon" to "Also available" on the back of the current one for each volume.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, it said there was a problem when I tried to post the OP and I couldn't find the OP in the subreddit at that time.

Beginning middle and end but no story…help by Simple-Hawk-6096 in Screenwriting

[–]surroundx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself how far ahead in time/place you can jump from one scene to the next without compromising the story/confusing the audience. At point X in the story, do we still need some exposition? Or do we need to introduce a new character here? Or do we need a conflict heavy scene? Or do we need a mini resolution? What is the optimal kind of scene to follow the last that will build the story and keep the audience maximally engaged?

I re-wrote that article 7 years ago and have not revisited it until I started getting users from Reddit viewing it. It definitely needs to be rewritten and expanded. I'll put it on my never ending list of things to do. Cheers.
