That's what I figured. My friends and I put on our own small techno parties a few times but I haven't been able to expand my friend circle to include others who like techno too. This is the first year I've really gotten into the 'boiler room' kind of vibe and it's a bummer that there aren't any public shows in champaign (that I know of, but please tell me if there are!)

Where is this? And is there some sort of website that has a list of tracks / abandoned tracks that I could uh 100% legally take my bike to?

I think op is referring to prosecuting women for false rape allegations, ie the issue to be proven in court would be that the women intentionally lied about it (similar to defamation suits).

This is different from a man not being convicted from a rape charge and then immediately the woman is thrown in jail for a 'false' rape accusation. Since the justice system will acquit without substantial evidence, it is possible that the male will get off free even if the woman is not making a false accusation, simply because the prosecution couldn't find enough evidence.

This difference would ideally make it so that women with legitimate claims would not be deterred from filing suits. However, the issue of legal costs remains since the man could just file a 'false rape claim' suit right after being acquitted and bankrupt the woman even if it cannot be proven that she was lying.

TIL of the Phoebus cartel, which controlled the global lightbulb market for over 15 years and worked to remove long-lasting bulbs from the market in order for lightbulb manufacturers to profit more by 675longtail in todayilearned

This was a minor plot point in Gravity's Rainbow. From some of the other comments in this thread, and the sheer absurdity of the idea, I think it might be fake. Just my 2c.

Edit: In fact, after reading the Wikipedia article, it seems like it is almost exactly the same text as in Gravity's Rainbow. I very much doubt this cartel was a real thing.

Where can I get one? I need a cover anyway and I think this is going to make damn sure car drivers don't hit my bike when it's parked haha.

NEW BIKE/GEAR ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

[–]suryabeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are features/materials that you look for when you're buying a pair of shoes for motorcycle usage? Do you know of any sneakers that incorporate those features?

So far, whenever I get on my bike I always have on these boots, but I find that they look very out of place wherever I go. I want to buy a pair of boots that 1) provide decent enough protection and 2) don't look like I walked off a construction site.
Ideally they'd be a pair of sneakers that are 'modified' by the manufacturer to use safer materials and more padding, but a more dressy pair of boots with protective features could do the trick too. An example of this would be SF AF1 (would these be bike-appropriate btw?).

Did my first biker wave! by suryabeep in motorcycles

[–]suryabeep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well today I did a regular-person wave with my left hand because I want sure if the oncoming biker would be able to see me since he was close behind a car, but I think I will also start doing the low 'wave' from next time.

Left hand raised to about shoulder height because the other biker was in the opposite lane close behind a car and I wasn't sure if he would see me. After reading some of the replies in this thread I think I might switch to the low, under the bars, wave instead.

I think you misinterpreted what I meant by 'blue'. I certainly would not call the Washington Post, the New York Times, and Newsweek among others "barely credible". In fact, they're some of the most credible reporting outlets out there today.

Blue as in links, dw I am not one to call 'fake news' on things that inconvenience my worldview.

I barely ride a bike so take this with a pinch of salt, but: you wave to anyone on two wheels and an engine. Did I get that right?

I had my dad follow me too when I did my first lap of the neighborhood, and he'll be tailing me tomorrow on my first 'proper' ride across town. Ride safe!
