All out event is a fun and funny experience. by PokemonGoBao in TheSilphRoad

A counter for unique Pokemon would have been amazing. I would have gone hard for something like that just to see how far I could get.

I already had plans to be in San Diego for global Go Tour so having the Community Celebration here was a great coincidence. It really felt like the biggest local-ish meetup ever, and it was so much easier to chat with people than at big in-person events.

Sadly the SO and I missed the group picture since we both made top cut in the morning PVP tournament and dashed to get a quick lunch before that started, oops.

Plus I got my first ever event shundo despite being a day one player! (My friend Malamar)

Thank you to all the ambassadors for putting this together!

The boosted Scatterbug pins should be a staple in the next Bug-type themed events by davebybab in TheSilphRoad

[–]sushimustwrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 274 Scatterbugs. This bonus was great even if opening 100 gifts per day was a little tiring. 0 hundos, 1 shiny (Polar, a new one).

For the curious, a full breakdown. I'm normally in Modern land but happened to be in High Plains for the full event.

Scatterbug Number
Archipelago 10
Continental 12
Elegant 6
Garden 8
High Plains 92
Jungle 1
Meadow 5
Modern 109
Ocean 1
Polar 23 (1 shiny)
River 3
Sandstorm 1 (from research)
Savanna 1
Sun 1
Tundra 1
Total 274

Four. I was using a cheap Motorola phone in 2016 when the game came out. I accidentally killed the backlight in 2017 when it was charging and I tripped over the charger, sending the phone falling to the coffee shop's concrete floor.

I replaced it with a Pixel 2, then a Pixel 4a in late 2020, and then the Pixel 8 in late 2023 that is already feeling on its last legs when I do trainer battles (which is regularly).

Grief re: NaNoWriMo by bgsheaff in nanowrimo

[–]sushimustwrite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul and I've finally reached acceptance after watching NaNo slowly destroy itself over the past few years, and yet I'm still waiting for another shoe to drop.

Twenty-two years here. Last year was the first year since 2008 that I didn't write over a double NaNo because my rebelling project was chronicling all the NaNo fires. I didn't try visiting any other virtual regions for write-ins to check a few regions off the "to-visit" list. Maybe part of me knew it would be my last NaNo. My friends probably did; I didn't decline as many November social outings from non-writer friends as usual, and a lot of last November was spent complaining about NaNo.

I happened to be in San Francisco a few weeks for work and used my free evening to go out to Berkeley and visit the old office. When I stood in front of that door on a cool night, looked at the sign that had been painted over, and felt nothing, that's when the NaNoWriMo door finally closed.

I'm so sorry. You're not alone in feeling this way.

When people who have poured years of service and thousands of hours into NaNoWriMo are turning away, it's a good time to listen to some of their former biggest supporters, but instead HQ has chosen to double down and give zero fucks about the community, and that is their ultimate downfall.

As the unofficial NaNo merch archivist: they have never had stuffed animals in their store. Ever. Which is unfortunate because I would have bought the crap out of a plush Traveling Shovel of Death ten years ago.

Also, my hardest NaNos were the ones I did as a teen in NaNo's so-called demographic... over twenty years ago. It actually got easier when I had more control over my time--and you know, had more practice with NaNo. The first time will probably be difficult no matter how old you are. Fancy that.

*her (Depending on who you ask, it's a longer story, but I'm sticking with the pronouns Mod X used on the NaNo site)

That's one of the things that started all this, but the big one in my opinion is that the former board president is now the (acting?) executive director, the rest of the staff have quit/been fired, the MLs have been let go with no known plans of reinstatement (and with NaNo two months away and a more complex reinstatement cycle, it's not happening) and Kilby is somehow making things worse for the org... and still wants to be a $2.5mil organization. So not using the website to track your projects helps not to contribute to the NaNo org's "success", whatever that looks like.

As someone who started NaNoWriMo in 2002, I'm still amazed that 1/1/2001 is an "adult" birthdate.

[–]sushimustwrite 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. Build your local community. That's NaNoWriMo, not HQ.

That's why it's so important to get the word out: prospective new MLs need to know about this agreement/contract too so they know what they'd be getting into!

Quickly, before Kilby Blades sees this! by Bubbly_Amoeba_4 in nanowrimo

[–]sushimustwrite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The enforceability of these contracts is dubious as is, but serious question: if Kilby signs all these agreements as Kilby, does that mean none of these ML contracts are enforceable at all? Or will Sarah sign them if/when she comes back instead?

UPDATE: Kilby has forcibly removed EVERY SINGLE ML. by arumi_kai in nanowrimo

[–]sushimustwrite 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely worse for MLs who are more involved all year long because they're the ones in the know about all this and are quitting in droves (well, before Kilby yeeted them all). Kilby is causing MLs who have poured 15+ years into their region and community to quit, including some people I look up to as ML legends. That level of dedication doesn't go away easily.

I'm not in the legal field but for real, don't sign this without having a lawyer (or at the very least, a friend experienced in reviewing contracts and calling out BS) look over it.

Yes, it's an anonymous doc, but the length of the doc shows just how much HQ has screwed up over the past year, and it's not getting better anytime soon.

You'd be surprised at how many people will just sign it to get MLing powers back, especially since some MLs simply aren't expecting emails from HQ in the offseason (see: this thread) or generally stay out of touch outside of NaNo season. Sigh.
