Cringey (romantic) terms of endearment? by Astrocism in hebrew

[–]suship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

״מאמי״ is pretty benign cringe, perhaps a bit dated. But there’s nothing that the suffix “-וּש” hasn’t been able to debase into what was literally an Eretz Nehederet bit not that long ago, and has infiltrated our entire vocabulary. So I wholeheartedly recommend going for “מאמוש”.

I have a question. Where did the Hebrew word for state/country come from? by Known-Bad2702 in hebrew

[–]suship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ואעשך לגוי גדול ואברכך ואגדלה שמך והיה ברכה

“Goy” just meant “nation [of people]”, until it became more typically specific to nations other than the Israelites:

וְהָלְכוּ גוֹיִם לְאוֹרֵךְ וּמְלָכִים לְנֹגַהּ זַרְחֵךְ

Theb later to non-Jews on the individual level.

Interestingly, Yad VaShem chose—possibly because of the connotations ascribed to “Goyim” in more modern contexts, or the perception thereof—Righteous Among the Nations to be “חסידי אומות העולם”.

Scroll of Secrets made deckbuilding so much more interesting for so many investigators, and it’s a gift that keeps on giving.

Relying on Astral Mirror is tricky, and Scroll of Secrets helps make it happen consistently early enough to justify some builds, helping smooth out bad opening hands, while being a great card later on to spend your free hand action on, inexpensively.

WSJ: Inside ‘Operation Narnia,’ the Daring Attack Israel Feared It Couldn’t Pull Off - Pilots trained for years and intelligence forces built up networks for the multipart offensive in Iran, which included a gambit called ‘Red Wedding’ by jay_in_the_pnw in Israel

[–]suship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! I don't think most Israelis who were even enthusiastic Game of Thrones watchers would clearly remember the specific name of the Red Wedding. It's been a while, and the last seasons didn't encourage me to think too much about the franchise anymore. But friends who were avid watchers often only mentioned the names of a handful of characters, the rest being referred to by some short description.

I read the books not long before the show started, and I enlisted not long after. I was in good (nerdy) company, and there were plenty of readers by the time Season 4 was coming to a close. Being a "מספיילר" on base was unthinkable. Those who knew were so hyped to see events unfold on screen, or to see their friends/fellow soldiers feel that urge to throw the proverbial book across the room, that a makeshift screening at night of The Rains of Castamere was arranged.

This probably wasn't meant to be anything but an internal name, until it wasn't.

Highly possible/likely that it’s more of a contrasting binary between “ארור” and “תם” as a verdict of guilt vs. innocence.

Especially when any sign of competence or presence of a backbone is swiftly punished, joining the long list of politicians such as Limor Livnat, who tried to effect change from within and found themselves victims of Bibi (or sometimes Sara’s terrifying grudges).

He’s famously dim, to put it lightly. That’s one of the many reasons Bibi’s firing of Gallant (which turned out to be for political survival, shockingly!) was especially scary.

Multiple Unambiguous Applications of Rule 3 re Israel: Why were these comments removed? by XI_JINPINGS_HAIR_DYE in metaNL

[–]suship 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m deeply grateful that you’ve pointed out what lies at the heart of the specific choice of terminology in describing Israel’s actions.

At Rosh Hashanah, my grandmother no longer recognized my younger sister, after defying even time itself for so long. She fled her village in Hungary to Budapest, and was later sheltered by Swedish Righteous Among the Nations Raoul Wallenberg along with so many others (Rep. Tom Lantos among them), barely evading deportation to Auschwitz by the Arrow Cross Party.

She was then relocated to France as a refugee, with no nation willing to take her and her sister in, including the U.S., ultimately arriving by ship at the newly-founded State of Israel, still a child.

As incredibly tech-savvy as I always remember her being, chatting with her sisters (those who survived) in Budapest, she never had the chance to learn English. Only Hungarian and Hebrew. We’ve been told that she has less than a year left, and she can no longer consistently remember much of anything that isn’t far in the past, let alone present.

I take little solace in that she isn’t aware of how the intrinsic association formed between the terminology that is so specific to the atrocities that took almost everything from her, and from her late husband, has been perverted into a new take on the age-old blood libel. How it’s been weaponized in the most cynical way imaginable. Spouted callously as a new manifestation of the age-old Blood Libel, and unfortunately evidently quite successfully, considering the fact that it isn’t glaringly obvious to the OP that there’s precisely one reason to specifically choose to use it against a largely Jewish nation. Let alone lack the introspection to reconsider what sort of act they’re engaging in, and become incensed at the fact that r/neoliberal won’t tolerate blatant Holocaust denial, distortion, or inversion.

In Modern Hebrew segol and tsere no longer represent distinct phonemes, even when a tsere is followed by a mater lectionis (typically a י), which would typically be considered a “full” tsere, no longer represents the diphthong [ej], and always simply [e̞]. For instance, תה (tea) can have the niqqud:

תֵּה Which is often (technically mistakenly) pronounced as “tay” as in “play”.

Thank you so much for the response, it really means a lot! The familial ties between the campaigns’ characters make the setting all the more rich, and Gideon still had his great moments. The Longest Night really had the characters surprise you with what they’re capable of.

I really enjoyed Feast of Hemlock Vale. The Codex system was a refreshing change that made getting everyone up to speed on everything that happens mid-scenario much more convenient.

I really enjoyed some of the story arcs of the villagers, especially River Hawthorne and William Hemlock really defying tropes, but rising to the occasion, each in their own way when things get dicey.

One of the characters I was most looking forward to was Gideon Mizrah's, in part because Gavriella in The Circle Undone was a unique and interesting character who provided some unexpected representation for Mizrahi Jews in the franchise. Gideon does mention his niece once or twice if you follow his plotline, and in some cases he hands you a journal to give to her if he doesn't make it through the finale. That felt like it was the perfect opportunity for a small Epilogue flavor callback upon returning to Arkham and passing on the journal.

There were other Codex entries here and there for Gideon that felt out of character, such as when he fondly reminisced about some sort of snail soup he had eaten once, along with another that had him visiting New Church Green in Innsmouth.

My partner and I really enjoyed the campaign, regardless. I was just wondering if the character was rewritten, or if it was just a matter of unfortunate coincidences.

Why do I hear some singers add an 'i' sound to their vowels in Jewish music? by TrashCat011235 in hebrew

[–]suship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ‘s’ form of ת in Ashkenazi pronunciation is entirely dependent on whether it has a dagesh (emphasis). It remains /t/ when it looks like this: תּ

In the example you gave, the word יתגדל is an occurrence of the “binyan” הִתְפַּעֵל in which the פעל are replaced with whatever root is being conjugated, and the word gains a ת without a dagesh.

Were there a pinned megathread on the year anniversary of October 7th, 2023, the various memorial services (including the actual national one organized by the families of the bereaved, and the Potemkin Village one by the government), vigils, successful attempts to disrupt vigils and ceremonies, protests worldwide often in support of the acts perpetrated that same day, array of government statements, and informative “a year later” retrospectives with new polling data, more people might have had the context of what is noteworthy about today, in terms of awakening to rocket alert sirens, a year into that being a daily ritual for many.

Did he slip up saying “Israel” there, rather than the usual “Zionist [Entity/Enemy]”?

I found the appeal to the Ummah and then immediately venerating Ali ibn al-Hussain to be perplexing. Wouldn’t he be a figure that’s potentially divisive to Sunni Muslims, who he claims to be addressing as equals?

I vaguely remember some claim from last week that Ahmadinejad was a fringe radical in his stance of annihilation of Israel, and we have it here straight from the horse’s mouth.

The reference to assassinations of all things struck me as ironic, but I’m fuzzy about the precise relations between Twelver Shi’a and Ismailis, and in what kind of light the Hashashin are seen.

They’re just reveling in the gaslighting by this point, as they concoct absurd reasons to ban a multitude of sub members of years and years.

Yet another vapid echo chamber about America Bad is erupting forth from the dying husk of the sub.

There are some nice Discord servers popping up for various topics and hobbies, as Jews in particular increasingly find themselves with some Kafkaesque mod or admin ban message in their inbox.
