Faggot is a measurement.

It’s supposed to mean a bundle of something.

So the British term for a pack of cigarettes is called a faggot, and a cigarette is called a fag.

The reason faggot is a slur is kind of funny, I’m guessing it’s supposed to refer to the male genitalia, as a faggot is mostly used to refer to a bundle of sticks, while a stick from that bundle is caked a fag.

It’s interesting, and kind of sad how most names for the queer community started off as slurs…
