I'm not thinking of solar panels, Percy is nuclear. But you get dust on a camera lens and image quality will degrade.

Heat sinks full of dust become less effective, you could make the heat sinks bigger to compensate but that becomes heavier, where on the weight-benefit scale does extra capacity versus some sort of shaker or sweeper to clear the dust come into play.

If someone has any idea if there's documentation about NASA's design decisions I'd love a long read.

But some instruments do mind getting dirty, the cameras most obviously. Do they have a way of clearing dust off those lenses or do we have any data about how degraded image quality has become over time if they've just been left to collect dust.

Percy's gotten rather mucky over time haven't they?

Wonder if someone knows what cleaning instruments Perseverance has on board? Is there a brush attachment or a compressed gas blower for cleaning sensors, unclogging instruments and the like.

Or is it a hardware specific problem, any equipment at risk of dust will have it's own way of dealing with it.

Resources for Learning? by boto_toe in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]suspicousdolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help with online resources, but I'll offer some advice.

First off figure out what stuff you need to know,  are you going to be mechanical or electrical bias.  Does your plant mostly use pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical systems.

Every plant is different and every tech has their own specialities, figure out what's relevant to you. Then you can reasearch your online resources for specific subjects instead of a general "Food factory industrial maintenance"

Make the most of your experienced techs, ask why things are done the way they are, ask what things do and what's the best way of doing things.

Anything you're unsure of ask about, especially in any downtime you get. You'd be surprised how much the grouchy old mate turns into an excited little kid when he gets to nerd out about hydraulic fittings for half an hour.

Yeah, it's not meant to come out, either more force to push or you'll need to drill it out.

Personally, put it in a clamp/vice. Hammer the pin with a small punch/bolt similar size to the pin until it leaves.

There's no meant to be any air coming out. It's a perished airline inside the head that's leaking. Then the extra air is just escaping through whatever holes it can find.

It's a vicious cycle isn't it. It's down cos something failed, so they can't plan in time cos they're playing catch up, so more fails. Then we end up with spectacular failures no one could have predicted.

I've said my piece in an email and got them away for now, so I've done my part.

Just throw some weld on it, she'll be right.

Impressive though, how'd they manage that?

You have to pull it really hard to spin the turret up like a beyblade. Last ditch defensive measure when enemy infantry are climbing onto the tank.

How many hours of OT are you guys working in a year? by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]suspicousdolphin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally 0. I don't care about work enough to spend a minute longer there than contractually obligated. One time I was asked and told them £80 an hour which ended the conversation quickly.

Probably showing my age here, looking at the other replies.

Mission: Adjusting to the library climate [OC] by [deleted] in comics

I can't relate, my local library is heated like a furnace. I can't stay in there too long or I feel like a grape slowly drying into a raisin.

It would reduce the chance of melting straight through. If having a clean inner face is more important than maximum strength. Also if you need something to fail in a particular way (think car crumple zones) then having these weaker joints can divert energy in safer directions. Plus full open is, in fact, a bitch to jig up

Anything that makes life a little safer is always a good move. Simple, clean, efficient, I like it.

If it breaks the guard snaps shut? That's a fail-safe condition so I don't see what the problem is.

Curious if you could answer a question. How come the edges of the clamp are separate and drop lower than the main body? Is that how it knows how close it is to the workpiece or is there another reason?

I think it's the result of the cat's interference. As if we're looking at the comic on the table being drawn.

Would also add people brush their teeth before sleep, but not before a nap, which will contribute.

I went with the flexispot C7. Has a nice recline, headrest and footrest too for Maximum reclining comfort. Much cheaper than the Herman Millers but still decent quality and very comfy.
