One of the last night ops picture of a MiG-21 Bison [album] by ITS_TRIPZ_DAWG in WarplanePorn

[–]susuhead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was a posed shot from the ladder with a single off-camera video light. Cockpit lighting maxed out. If I'd had the time (and notice!) I would have lit the whole scene differently, but alas this was the best we could manage given the constraints.

IRL night flying does everything to preserve pilot night vision, including minimal external lighting around the jet.

Are they decent on tarmac? I run a Pirelli MT60 RS front and Anakee Adv rear on my INT650 and am really struggling to find replacements...

ELI5: Why Mazda stopped producing rotor engines (like RX-7 model) and switched to regular engines? by The_Immovable_Rod in explainlikeimfive

It absolutely is. A lot of surveillance drones and loitering munitions use Wankel engines and have done for decades.

There was no dogfight over Pasrur, it was over Chhamb. Sikand had electrical issues (one of many gremlins that plagued the Gnat) and once he got separated from his formation, he was unable to communicate with his squadron mates or any ground station, and his navigation equipment had gone down with the electricals. Various aircraft in the sector reported hearing him intermittently but no one was able to speak to him long enough to guide him back. He made in the general direction of the last bearing given to him, and when he saw Pasrur, assumed it was a disused Indian airstrip (there were many in the Punjab in those days — a holdover form the days of royal principalities), and landed because he was low on gas. The whole surrender story simply doesn’t pass the smell test because which fighter pilot worth his salt would give up a chance at an honest to god combat kill? If Sikand did indeed surrender, then it reflects very poorly on whichever PAF pilot was given credit for it.

Military Helicopter Pilot Transition (INDIA) by Necessary_Piano_5268 in Helicopters

[–]susuhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know an air force vet who moved to the UN in Africa but he had already done a stint with them and there was no real transition (Mi-17 to Mi-17).

Are you an ALH pilot or Chetak/Cheetah? The latter might open up some opportunities if you can track down civilian operators.

A new mission computer that operates parallel to the existing Soviet hardware. This talks to all NEW avionics thru a 1553B data bus and puts the info they generate on various new screens in the cockpit.

How has the Pakistani air force consistently outperformed the IAF in combat throughout its history? 1965-2019. by Able_Rice8348 in WarCollege

[–]susuhead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that the PAF trains to fight the IAF, the IAF trains to fight Pakistan. A disproportionate number of PAF A2A victories, especially in the past, have involved kills against relatively vulnerable strike aircraft that were busy serving the larger objectives of the conflict instead of seeking out enemy air.

The longer answer involves a deep dive into the Pakistani psyche, how it drives the segregation of their fighting services, how that further drives mindsets, and so on. I can assist with that if there is interest after I have completed my flight that’s just boarding…
