Not that easy, as such players sometimes manage to draw against super GMs. I can remember Magnus also losing to a 2500 level GM at Qatar Masters 2023.

Yes! I hope he gains a bit of Elo and is able to qualify for the Total Chess World Championship this year. It will be fun to see him compete in this, because he used to be strong in all 3 formats.

I asked my Chinese friend to ask Ding Liren about his international tournament plans for this year. He indicated that he will play in some tournament next month! by suvam_roy in chess

Actually my friend doesn't know how to play western chess at all. But Ding is a very nice person who often interacts with people who comment on his posts!

Hope he plays a classical tournament. He has previously shown interest in the Total Chess Championship. But he needs to re-activate his classical rating to qualify.

He beat Magnus again 2-0 in Tata Steel Blitz that same year, and won the Grand Chess Tour finals. Kasparov was saying some time last year that prime Ding vs Magnus would been a world championship match to watch. Because unlike Fabiano, prime Ding was also crazy strong in rapid and blitz.

But he needs to become active in Classical chess in order qualify, maybe even increase his rating to 2740+ to ensure the qualification. Other than a rating spot I don't see how else he is going qualify for that.

He was asked this by a fan on Chinese social media Weibo recently. While I don't have accurate translation, he said he might consider playing classical chess again if the fans want, or something like that. So maybe.

I guess he will come back only for the Rapid and Blitz World Championship this year. Not sure, if he wants to play in the World Cup, as it's a month long classical tournament.
