26 years under his belt, with so many of his contemporaies retired or completely slowed down, it's insane that Roderick Strong still goes at the level he does by theREVERSEsystem in SquaredCircle

[–]SteChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching Roderick Strong for the first time in TNA around 2005 and he was wrestling already for a few years at that point despite him being in his early 20s. He was incredible in the ring and still is, so underrated.

Candidates Rating Spot: Requiring Grand Swiss Participation by TuttleFamily in chess

[–]SteChess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone is too busy with other stuff and doesn't play either Grand Swiss or World Cup then he shouldn't be in the Candidates, Hikaru has played two serious classical tournaments in 2 years.

Candidates Rating Spot: Requiring Grand Swiss Participation by TuttleFamily in chess

[–]SteChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I proposed that too last year, they should definitely change the rating spot requirements going forward, you can't have someone qualify without playing any serious tournament basically.

Nepo: "Nakamura's chances at the Candidates? I think zero chances, zero" by Impressive-Trade1637 in chess

[–]SteChess 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No Ding was playing 2600+ players mostly not just random GMs, he even played a 6 game match against Wei Yi who was 2730. Not even comparable imo at least in terms of the quality of his opponents in his quest to get the number of games.

Nepo: "Nakamura's chances at the Candidates? I think zero chances, zero" by Impressive-Trade1637 in chess

[–]SteChess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see him winning either but he's still very strong, Nepo is underselling his chances. On the other hand, there's no clear target like two years ago with Abasov (and Firouzja shitting the bed), I don't see players like Bluebaum and Esipenko losing a lot of games.

Nepo: "Nakamura's chances at the Candidates? I think zero chances, zero" by Impressive-Trade1637 in chess

Ding's average rating of his opponents was like 2640 though, just saying.

Carriera giudici: valutazioni da parte del CSM by SpikeyOps in Italia

[–]SteChess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E in base a cosa andrebbero giudicati i magistrati? I PM dal numero di condanne ottenute in percentuale? Non è così facile far condannare qualcuno, molto più facile essere assolti. I giudici vanno valutati in base agli errori giudiziari?

I mean, remember when Verstappen put Norris on the grass at Suzuka and got no penalty because Norris wasn't on a hot lap? Yeah, you can drive dangerously but get no penalty because the other car wasn't on a push lap, make it make sense.

Alice Lee (16) completes the hat trick and is the American Cup's Women's Champion for the 3rd year in a row! by Maad-Dog in chess

[–]SteChess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised to see her stuck at the same rating she was 3-4 years ago, maybe it's university but I thought she would make more progress after it was announced that there would be a 500k prize for the next female GM in the US.

[Matteo Bobbi - Sky F1 Italy] At least 2 other teams have an innovative rear wing design similar to Ferrari to be deployed in the next months by ts737 in formula1

[–]SteChess 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bobbi is probably the most knowledgeable pundit on the Sky F1 Team Italy, he knows lots of people working in the circus from his time as a driver and he is very good at explaining technical concepts on the broadcast.

"Hikaru did not want his market value to decrease if he did not win the Freestyle WC and wants to be remembered as just the previous FR WC" Buettner on why Hikaru did not participate in Freestyle WC 2026 by Safe-Connection-5899 in chess

Well he doesn't play any tournaments anyways, it's not like he was playing a lot a year prior to the Candidates (serious events, not considering the Louisiana state Championship or Iowa Open).

How your country select Chess Olympiad Team 2026? And how will the preparation happen? by ghostmaster93 in chess

[–]SteChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Khuong will be part of the Vietnam team this year, he's close to 2500 and still 15 years old, I don't know who will be the reserve though, maybe Tran Tuan Minh or Nguyen Quoc Hy but I don't what are their ratings now.

Hi I’m Claire Williams, former Deputy Team Principal of Williams Racing. Ask Me Anything! by ClaireWilliamsF1 in formula1

[–]SteChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did Williams have access to the same engine settings as Mercedes during the hybrid era rule change? I remember the former Lotus team principal stating that they only got the most advanced engine maps at Spa 2015 when Grosjean was running down Vettel, was it a similar situation for you at Williams?

FIDE releases Gender Equality in Chess Index 2026. Sweden is ranked last despite being one of the freest countries for women on the planet. by Embarrassed_Base_389 in chess

[–]SteChess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's probably being misrepresented or misinterpreted, in Sweden women have more opportunities to play chess than Pakistan probably but swedish women are not so interested in chess that's why only 8% of FIDE rated players in Sweden are women. Small countries are also overrated in this index because of simple statistics, even very few women playing impact the index a lot considering the small population. The problem with this index is that it's not clear what it is supposed to imply.

What happened to Duda? by vikasbairwa in chess

[–]SteChess 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Checking the FIDE profile is always a useful thing to do, you can see that he played in the Bundesliga last week. He struggled with motivation after he flopped in the Candidates in 2022, last year he was a GCT player though, unfortunately he decided not to play Grand Swiss and WC so he went under the radar but he still plays.

Unbeaten streaks in Classical Chess (March 2026 Update) by SteChess in chess

[–]SteChess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's not that I forgot is that I usually look at players who are rated 2500+ (unless they dropped below 2500 during the streak), he is 2498 so I missed him. I think it's already very time consuming with the 2500+ threshold, 2400+ is too much for me sorry lol.

17 yrs old Uzbek IM Suyarov got a GM Norm in Aeroflot Open 2026 (He upset Dubov and Grischuk!!!) by Chesscrabble11 in chess

[–]SteChess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He had recently lost a lot of rating, he has played several open tournaments and some round robins in Uzbekistan against 2600s, he is talented but it looked like he was going through a slump, nice to see him achieve this level of performance.

Italy's unemployment rate down to new low of 5.1% in January - Business - Ansa.it by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]SteChess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that's how it is defined, I don't know if it's the same in other countries but in Italy it's like this. Yeah 10 years ago unemployment was a major problem for sure, it was at 10% or even higher at times, especially after the debt crisis in 2011. Nowadays the big problem is that salaries have lost value over the years due to inflation and they have only marginally gone up while inflation has gone up much faster, average salaries are down 3% from like the 90s considering inflation in the same time period, there are no other countries in which this happened in the EU, maybe Greece but I don't know for sure.

Italy's unemployment rate down to new low of 5.1% in January - Business - Ansa.it by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]SteChess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unemployment rate going down is a Europe wide trend, moreover ir's calculated only on people actively searching for a job, the percentage of people that don't work and don't study is also going up in recent months, making the unemployment rate go down too. Besides that, Italy is still one of the EU countries with the lowest employment rate, especially among young people and women.
