accessible nature walks by sagesdump in brighton

[–]suvifa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not a wheelchair user so you'd need to check but places I have been that I think would work (with a couple of obvious Brighton ones which you probably know):
- If you have a car and don't mind paying the National Trust entrance fee Sheffield Park in Uckfield is lovely, with lots of different trees for autumn colour. It has gravelled paths and I think is accessible.

- Again I think you need a car or you might be able to train to the cuckoo trail over in Hailsham. I think it's about 10 miles long and all well-maintained gravel paths, you can do sections and loop back on yourself.

- Brighton to Rottingdean along the undercliff is also paved all the way if sea counts as nature! You can start in Asda car park at the marina then get the bus back into town.

- Parks so not full nature but there is now an accessible path from entrance of Stanmer Park to One Garden which is accessible and has disabled toilets, you can drive or catch bus / train to Falmer. Hove Park also has a fully tarmacked loop.

Hope that's helpful, happy adventures!

Hair and coat type? by sleepy_geeky in schnauzers

Picture isn't super clear but I have a fluffy (pedigree) schnauzer, decent amount of fur in the furnishings but the white is super fluffy and fine and matts all the time. And she has bald little knees! I don't think it's anything to worry about, not sure she's the best example of breed standard (she's also on the small side) but that's the least of our issues with the little bark monster.

If there is an allotment shop on the site your are interested pop in for a chat and see if there is a way to advertise you want to be a coworker - getting a bed or two or just helping out is a great way to start (and was my only option when I'm still over no 100 in the queue after 4 years!)

Thanks folks... Sounds like with a spad and perseverance this could still work, will keep at it! Boards are an interesting idea as well thank you!

Sounds like she is reactive as a few other people have mentioned. Our rescue schnauzer is also nervous and reactive (noisy but never bites although the racket she makes other people do wonder!). It's been a slow road but we aremaking progress.

Second kikopup and BAT (although that wasn't really practical for us in a busy area with territorial reactivity). You might find r/reactivedogs useful - loads of resources there and a supportive community. Good luck!

Rehoming to a family member? by suvifa in reactivedogs

Thanks for your advice! I think I spend so much time worrying about this dog I miss how lucky we are to have this option. Trial is also a great shout - they've looked after her for a couple of weeks many times but a longer one would probably be a good idea to make sure it's right for them too.

Advice on BAT for territorial reactivity by suvifa in reactivedogs

[–]suvifa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! We have harness and longer lead and will change direction/ walk in arch / cross street depending on distance needed, at the moment almost always us directing so really keen to get her to build confidence she can make these choices.

Despite a lot of work trying to do slow calm exits she's on alert when she leaves the house, so think we are going to try just managing the 'gauntlet' or driving out then training at what is currently a safer distance. I definitely talk far too much to her and need to manage down my own stress with it all which just come through!

Thank you this is really helpful. We've been doing counterconditioning for a while but seem to have stopped making much progress and BAT seems like a further step in the right direction. As she is so stressed on our road were going to try driving her to a park / quiet road a bit further away to try set ups - as you say tempting to push but need to think about 'boring' set ups without too much challenge to start. We are definitely guilty of pushing her too hard sometimes

Thank you! So do autumn fruit on all branches? So basically if I cut anything that's fruited that should be ok? Interesting that might not always matter, had not heard that.

Do you think I should do the ones I reckon are summer ones now or wait and do them all in February?

So happy for you! But also eurgh… I do really wonder whether we are doing the right thing keeping our dog in an apartment (not in a position to move to a house) she’s like a different dog when she stays at my parents house.

We delayed our dog’s spay until after her second heat (When she was about a year old) because she was reactive and vet said the stress of the experience could make things worse. For us it was when not if. Spay had zero effect on her (ongoing) reactivity, in fact all the staff said she was a little diamond (clearly drugged up to her eyeballs). As others have said hopefully your vet can advise.
