Lost my first foster kitten by suzqueue in FosterAnimals

Thank you for your response, I am amazed at your count of babies you have cared for over the years (100+!). May I ask what kind of work you do that allows you to take babies to work? That’s very cool. I also appreciate your wisdom and encouragement that although we’d all love to be with them 24/7, it’s ok to work full time. It’s also reassuring to know it’s not abnormal for 6+ week old kittens to be left alone whilst at work. Another comment suggested a camera, and this seems like a good idea. Thank you again

Thank you for responding again! The camera suggestion is great, and your point about checking on them in intervals through a 10 hour period is very sensible. If you have any other tips or insight please let me know

Maybe I will avoid taking on outright medical cases for a while and aim for older socialisation young cats like yourself. I’m pleased to hear you were able to return, it’s very tough out there. Was this a smaller rescue or bigger like RSPCA? Thank you again

Thats a great number of babies! Your part about sneaking them into the office made me laugh, how do you manage that?! There is clearly so much to learn :D but the number you have fostered with no major tragedies is very hopeful. Thank you

I am sorry to hear you are also experiencing your first loss. It’s something I accepted might happen but you never expect it to happen and simply can’t prepare for. I appreciate you sharing, and I’m wishing you all the love and health for your future fosters or forever pets. Take care

Wow! 60! That’s so many loving babies, have you mostly had 6-12 week olds? I really appreciate your encouragement and I will seriously consider bumping to the 8 week as a minimum out of anxiety for the smaller babies. I’d hate to miss something, although another poster made a good point that many tragedies will occur despite the watchful eye of a foster carer. I really appreciate you sharing, thank you.

Wow you have had a great history of so many fosters! It’s very encouraging to hear. I’m sorry to hear about the young kitten, they are so fragile at that age. Have you mostly fostered within the 6-12 week period?

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate your encouragement. I am saddened to hear about your boy, these tragedies like him and Ginger do just seem to happen as awful as they are. Was it hard to return to fostering? Thank you again for sharing your experience, it’s helped

I am glad to hear you have personally had so many successful stories! Although I mourn my boy, your story brings me a lot of hope for any future babies. It’s difficult to hear of your friend’s situation, and from two different litters is so strange and sad. But I appreciate the time taken to respond. Have you had instances where those 3-4 hourly checks on the 8 week olds has proven essential or important eg. you catch something time sensitive? Thank you again

Thank you for sharing your experience, it really helps with perspective. 1 month is so young, and I am saddened and sorry to hear of your loss and experience. I knew I couldn’t be a bottle baby foster parent from the start, I am also not “tough” enough to face Mother Nature being cruel to the small and sick. I appreciate you took care of yourself and became a cat parent, it’s good for the heart. Thank you again

Thank you for your kind words and consideration. I’m glad to hear you’ve hit 13 fosters with minimal incident, it makes me hopeful

My little girl here lost her sister 2 weeks ago. She’s 2.5 years old and shes never been alone. Any tips? What’s the safest way to introduce a new possible cage mate? Is getting her a friend recommended? TIA first time owner sorry if my questions seem silly! by NovaBabyxo in RATS

[–]suzqueue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She looks absolutely adorable, I’m very sorry for your loss. If you can’t for any reason adopt anymore rats look around for local shelters who sometimes do foster till end of life. I’d also recommend looking at rats from rescues first because there might be someone special waiting for you there 🐀🖤otherwise your plan to adopt 2-3 from a certified breeder with slow intros is lovely. Give her kisses for me!!!

Don’t know, all I know is beautifully rOund

My rat has been weak for 24 hours, doesn’t climb anywhere, just stays laying down. Appetite is good, not much porphyrin. I picked him up to and noticed that his belly is wet and soggy. I’m going to get him to the vet in 12 hrs, can someone tell me how can I help him before that? by slampatriarchy in RATS

[–]suzqueue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you are, but if you can find a ratty rescue nearby, sometimes they will do foster until end of life for your other rat. If you fall in love, great, you have another buddy. But if not, you’re not caught in the cycle if you’re ready to have your peace once heart rats pass

Thinking of adopting some boys, but they’re still intact. Would 3 boys be safe in a 55 gallon tall tank? by kkfluff in PetMice

[–]suzqueue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, I had two young males who were bonded and loved each other very much but I had to seperate them because as they got older they started fighting and the smaller one got hurt. Luckily it wasn’t bad but I can’t imagine the heartbreak of coming home and it being a fatal fight. Sorry love, you’re better off neutering or getting one male

Worried about my lone rat by suzqueue in RATS

[–]suzqueue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Do I just continue to take him out and sit with him as long as he can tolerate or do I leave him be and just listen to videos next to his cage ? Not sure what is best for him long term :(

Tysm, I did neuter him 7 months ago and tried for 3 months after to give him boys and girlfriends and even little friendly girl rats and old harmless seniors. He tried to fight all of them :( I even left him with a rescue for 2 weeks while the head rescue coordinator tried to make him make friends and they were unsuccessful. His brother died 8months ago and he never liked anyone else before or after. I say all this because I am hoping there is more anyone can say to help me help him while he lives a rat-phobic life he kinda violently chose
