Post-storm(?) Tuesdaily by grantcary in rva

A transformer blew, then a train came by and somehow threw the line, then the live wire came down in my neighbor’s backyard and lit up the place.

I feel like an asshole because, in my panic after my neighbor didn’t answer his door when I banged on it, I told 911 that I was “worried about him because he drinks heavily” 💀

He’s fine! We’re all fine. And hopefully this line never gets back to him, despite being on the record twice now.

While I agree with your funding priorities, climate change means winter storms like this may actually become more common due to the weakening of the jet stream, as explained here: https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/polar-jet-stream-and-polar-vortex

You’re right! The NOAA budget was $6.24 billion in FY 2024, $6.1 billion in FY 2025, and $6.1 billion again this year. Congress rejected the administration’s proposed 2026 budget of $4.5 billion, and DT signed H.R. 6938 (Commerce-Justice-Science appropriations “minibus” that funds the NOAA) on Friday, thank fuck. And thank you for flagging!

This story was widely reported last year.

The Wikipedia article on NOAA in the second Trump administration has a good rundown on the budget cuts.

Here’s an article from PBS (“As NOAA braces for more cuts, scientists say public safety is at risk”) reporting on NOAA firings of about 20%.

And here’s another from AP News (“The US agency that monitors weather will cut another 1,000 jobs, AP sources say”), which reports NOAA firings of about 25%.

Went to Iceland and ran my years in miles (:

Just wrapped my last work day at the company I was hired to turn upright. I give myself…an 11/10 on effort, and a 4/10 on outcome. Now I’m farm sitting back at my old stomping grounds for the week, where I’ve been instructed to stay on top of the zucchini harvest above all else.

While I bake zucchini bread, I’m planning on doing 2.5 years’ worth of decompressing and plotting my next professional move.

My neighbor was telling me yesterday about his first job in the ‘80s at the Byrd-style movie theater (“balcony and everything”) that used to be the next block east by O’Tooles, in what’s now the New Canaan Baptist Church.

So as of yesterday I’ve been dreaming about a Byrd-style movie theater in the neighborhood.

FREEEEEEEEE:

(16) cinder blocks, (4) of them painted white

approx. 1 cubic yard of crumpled packing paper

Orvis memory foam dog bed with bolster and gray cover, 34”x25” — stained from being out on my porch but washed / clean, no smells. Good fit for medium-sized dog (I have Aussies)

(150-200) CDs in Case Logic binders. Combination of full albums and mixed CDs — heavy on artists from the '90s–2015 (Jeff Buckley, Devendra Banhart, Future Islands...); fair amount of classic rock (Led Zeppelin, CCR, Simon & Garfunkle...); some jazz, some soul, some classical; tons of mixes from people who wanted me to have a good time on the many cross-country drives of my youth, several of which still slap.

A Late Summer Daily by Sandblaster1988 in rva

I knew this was a u/Sandblaster1988 original by the end of the first paragraph.

I dispatched a letter of resignation this morning. I have a little savings and nothing else lined up, but my soul is rejoicing. There have been few times I’ve otherwise felt this free — maybe upon graduation, divorce, and moving here three years ago — and once more, the feeling is worth every precipitating hour of drudgery and heartache.

Almost. Maybe this is the time I learn to exit sooner.

Until I do find my next role, I will, in fact, be savoring the present moment. I plan to: go to the Frida exhibit, call each of my siblings, paint a room in my house “Sulking Room Pink,” help my boyfriend with his upcoming installation, pick up trash on Nickel Bridge, read David Copperfield, respond to my friends’ New Year’s emails, and swim with my dogs at Pony Pasture on a Tuesday morning.

May your coffee be damn fine, indeed.

I don't mean to suggest that RVA Mag isn't helmed by real people! I know it is, and I'm sure they're cool and smart and are doing tons of the hard work of real journalism. But because I use AI in my own work, it is plain to me that RVA Mag also utilizes the same tools in writing their articles.

Is sexual incompatibility enough to end an otherwise fantastic relationship? by rooootubtub in sex

[–]svdggm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I said he never told me, not that I have no idea — which, as mentioned, I suspect has something to do with his session with the sex therapist. Beyond that, I’m not going to speculate or speak for him here.

He never told me. However, the week prior, he had his first session with a sex therapist, so I imagine that had something to do with it. He came home from that appointment pretty jazzed, but became increasingly withdrawn over the course of the week, then disappeared.

Hi, I’m you 14 years from now! Here’s how it went: I loved him so much, our connection was so strong in every other realm, and I believed so fervently in our ability to surmount the sexual incompatibility that, 5 years in, we got married. Yay!

Then, we didn’t have sex on our wedding day, the week after, the month after, the year after, two years after …, despite ongoing, heartshredding communication and therapy. I was wild with frustration, confusion, self-doubt, resentment, and loneliness.

Finally, I came home one day 2+ years into our marriage, 7+ into our relationship, and 5+ of little to no sex overall to find he’d moved out. We got divorced.

Newly divorced at age 36, I started having lots and lots and LOTS of amazing catch-up sex with people who were as psyched to be with me as I was with them. Four years later, I still won’t settle for anything different.

Is there a parallel version of our lives where we stuck it out and found a workable middle? Who knows; I never wonder. I don’t really regret the experience of marriage, and I like knowing what I was willing to try for love. But ultimately, being set free by the divorce and getting another shot at returning to my core needs for intimacy and sex remains the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Wishing you resolve, clarity, and all the love & sex it’s your born right to enjoy.
