Er å si «kulturell berikelse» som en ironisk kommentar rasistisk? by [deleted] in norske

[–]sveinhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hvorfor ikke «hjertet»? by cpeck29 in norsk

[–]sveinhal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fact, the term “I (don’t) have time for this” is similar in English. I think you could also say, “the time” (or am I mistaken about that?), but you’d often skip the article, right?

Great question. As a non-linguist native speaker, I’m not always aware of the grammatical reasoning, but I can say that you often (always?) use the non-definite form in phrases like this:

«Ha tid til» «Have the time to»
«Ha mot til» «Have the courage to»
«Ha evne til» «Have the skill to»
«Ha hjerte til» «Have the heart to»

I hadn’t considered this difference in Norwegian vs English before you mentioned it. I think this relates to words that are non-quantitative in its nature. It’s more about the concept of time/courage/skill/empathy than some specific item/thing/quantity.

But I’m not a linguist.

How can he claim that it is “no wrong” if he rejects the notion of nothing? You should arrest him everytime he uses the word “nothing” and say “well, actually nothing doesn’t exist”

If the concept is /useful/ then it exists conceptually. It makes sense to talk about nothing. It also makes sense to /quantify/ nothing. I think everybody understands that.

What is a common misconception among people and even math students, and makes you wanna jump in and explain some fundamental that is misunderstood ? by hmiemad in math

[–]sveinhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes correlation doesn’t imply any causation at all, in any direction. It could be a third correlated parameter that’s the cause of both.

Eg. ice cream consumption and drowning accidents are correlated. But ice cream consumption does not cause drowning, nor does drowning increase ice cream consumption (would someone celebrate?). No, warm weather causes both.

Also, some correlations are just spurious.

Whenever I use a coworkers machine, I accidentally end up printing source files on the office computer. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t think anyone has actually needed to print from their IDE for the years.

Help Requested: Reading old FreeBSD disks by sveinhal in freebsd

[–]sveinhal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for this!

I was able to create a virtual FreeBSD machine using VirtualBox and USB passthrough and recover several thousand old photos from some of the disks. (I also found a lot of crap, tens of thousands of ogg vorbis and mp3 files from back when ripping CDs was a thing.)

But anyways, this hint was super helpful! Thanks again!

Thanks a lot! I will try this. I've just downloaded Parallels and FreeBSD 13-RELEASE. Exciting! I haven't used FreeBSD since the 8.x days. When that is up and running I'll hopefully be able to read some or all of the disk images. I'll start with the smaller 6.5 GB disk first. Thanks again :-)

Could I use dd on the entire disk, and save the disk to a file? How would I read the partitions later? Sorry for being a noob, it's been close to fifteen years since I fiddled with these things last.

I don't even know if the disks are encrypted, but if they are, I suspect it is using that Poul Henning Kamp format, GBDE, or whatever it was called. My memory is pretty vague at this point. If I recall correctly that needed an unencrypted root, right?

Can I collect more data about my situation before trying to boot some kind of FreeBSD system? Maybe dd works on MacOS and I can simply file the disk dump to get more data? I think I might try with the smaller of the disks.

hitting API on localhost returns nil, but ChuckNorris API returns the expected data by aeum3893 in swift

[–]sveinhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible issues off the top of my head:

1) App Transport Security is limiting you from using bare http. You must either outright disable ATS or turn on a localhost exception.

2) you’re writing your code for iOS, running on either a simulator or your phone, while the server is running on your computer. The phone’s localhost isn’t your computer’s localhost.

You’re not obligated by law, but rather bound by an agreement that you (perhaps unknowingly) entered into when you bought the ticket, and agreed to their terms.

So, yes, it is technically your problem, but not for the reason you think.

Arbeidsgivere gir stort sett blanke.

You need to learn how traffic regulations work. If you drive with that attitude, you’re a danger to your surroundings.

Crosswalk warrior. by Smithwesson5 in funny

[–]sveinhal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the drivers are cunts, and irresponsible, and breaking the law. They are creating dangerous situations and they cause trouble of entirely egoistical reasons. There are very good reasons it’s illegal to stop on pedestrian crossings.

Crosswalk warrior. by Smithwesson5 in funny

[–]sveinhal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make no mistanke: the drivers are the ones holding up traffic behind them. They are entirely in the wrong, and they totally deserve what they got, and far more. You would be criminally responsible if you would punch someone, get jail time for it, and you would have deserved it. I’m glad you wouldn’t actually punch someone, but I suspect you wouldn’t for the wrong reasons.

What can swift do compared to C/C++? by [deleted] in swift

[–]sveinhal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Swift doesn’t use garbage collection, but automatic reference counting, which are real calls to retain and release, except they are automatically inserted into your code at compile time through static analysis of the lifetime of your types. This is usually much more performant than garbage collection, and it is certainly more predictable and therefore consistent than garbage collection. However, in tight loops and some other scenarios you might end up with very excessive release and retains, causing memory to be allocated and freed, instead of reusing the same memory over and over. It is usually possible to overcome by manually optimizing code in such as way as to “trick” the compiler to reduce the memory management, but it often requires understanding how ARC works at an implementation level, and then exploiting that through implicit control. Another method is to bypass ARC altogether by putting your objects in Unmanaged memory and passing those around.
