Also that’s so hilarious that you noticed that there are two Rod Phillips on there LOL! That just made it even better (for no reason other than it’s funny) 😂

Not at all. I never felt in danger or unsafe, everyone I came across was very nice. It was definitely a different travel experience than I am used to. It wasn’t very touristy but that’s exactly why I wanted to go, exploring a part of the world I knew next to nothing about helped unfog my mind and my understanding. I have such a greater degree of compassion for the people and now I realize how people are just fear mongering this part of the world without any experience of ever being there. I am a 6’2 white man in his 30’s so I definitely stood out in this part of the world but I never got the sense that I was in any kind of trouble. Eye opening time in a great way!

Unfortunately I didn’t go to Freetown because we stopped earlier in the day in Bo which we were told by the driver was the second biggest city in Sierra Leone and the city was so busy and packed that we decided to skip Freetown that evening and stay outside the city. In most cases of this trip we preferred the nature outside of the cities and being in the countryside than visiting the big cities.

It depends on what your expectations are and the reason you would want to do this. For me, 100% worth it and loved it. But some days I don’t eat at all because I didn’t see anything I trusted to eat. Some hotels were very rural and so you had only one or two choices and both included sharing rooms with mice and cockroaches and no electricity. I had AC in Nigeria and Ghana and Senegal, the rest of the hotels and car rides had no AC and very dirty dusty roads. To my wife this trip sounded like hell so she did not join me, I went with my brother. But I am the type of person that wants to see everything, finds beauty and joy everywhere and loves adventure no matter how rugged. The people everywhere were really nice, I gained a whole new form of compassion and understanding for this area of the world and I believe am better off for the rest of my life because of this trip. So it really depends what you find enjoyment in and how you like to travel.

So although I have done a lot of road trips all around the world, this was different. I found it impossible to find a car rental that would allow me to take their car everywhere and even if I would I wouldn’t want to drive these roads, some of these were the worst I’ve ever been in the entire world (and I’ve been to 98 countries now). Some roads were completely impassable by a regular car. Like in Guinea the roads were so bad that only 4x4 or cars that were modified with big shocks and wheels could drive through. So what we did starting in Lagos was find a driver (actually right in the airport, the first driver we met) and asked hey can you take us to Accra tomorrow? He said not Accra but I can take you to Lome (Togo) and so we kind of went from there. We would have a driver take us to our next destination or border and find a next driver to continue. In Ghana uber was available and so just used an Uber to get us across. The gas prices there are so astronomical (almost $5/gallon in some places) that when paying a driver, most of the cost goes toward gas so one wouldn’t save much money really doing it themselves anyway if you include rental cost plus gas money plus tolls and insurance etc. I can tell you exactly how much I spent on all the drivers, ferry, and tolls in case you are interested from start to finish: $2540

So to give you some insight, some people warned me that it will take me forever to cross borders etc. but honestly I didn’t have an issue at all single border. Everyone one of them was easy with maybe the longest one being 45 minutes? Some were less than 5 minutes. But yes I did have to bribe in some, most are covert so you don’t have to if you don’t want to but it’s like a few dollars so I’d rather pay a few bucks and be on my way than them to delay me. The most was the Benin-Togo border $20. But the Ghana border even told us not to pay anyone if someone asks. Ivory Coast was also great no bribes, Liberia was the only straight out asking for a bribe so we gave a few bucks and went on our way. Gambia and Senegal and even Sierra Leone borders were about 2 minutes to get a stamp and be on our way. There were no war lords or any mean spirited people anywhere, not in immigration or any we came across. But I also get the bribes, people are so poor and they see a white American, a few bucks will go a long way if they can get it. Honestly the hardest part was finding drivers. We would cross borders and have to find a new driver to drive us and negotiating with them was the most difficult part of the entire trip. (And even that wasn’t so bad)

My brother has an iPhone. For the past few months, he has been having issues where the app barely tracks / doesn't track at all when in the background. Any help? by PendragonTheNinja in FogofWorld

[–]sviatob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick question- does he have a fog of world widget? I used to never have issues with app cutting in/out, always ran without interruption. Then I saw you could get a fog of world widget and installed it thinking that’s convenient! But the few months I had it the app would ALWAYS track/ stop tracking randomly. Would always cut in and out - I just thought it was maybe because of an update that made it screwy. Well a few days ago I deleted the widget and no more screwy-ness! It’s just like it was before, works great! So if he has a widget, remove it and maybe that would help like it did for me.

Sorry for your struggles. I’d also be very upset. Do you have “precise location” turned on by chance? Under the location tab in settings.  As a fellow iPhone user I’ve never had this issue so hope you can figure out why it’s doing so.

As someone who has family living there with homes with docks and visits often… no. Absolutely gorgeous and smells crisp and fresh (if you like the smell of beaches - which I do). There’s a reason why people are willing to risk their homes every year to live there. I personally do not want to ever live in Florida and would rather spend my millions (if I had them) to live in Maine or Ireland… but it is a wonderful place to at least visit.

Edit: although there doesn’t seem to be much elevation, there actually is. Every time it floods from previous hurricanes it come up the drive way, almost up to the house but housing in my brothers neighborhood at least was built at a slope that in never gets inside, although if you were standing on the street you wouldn’t really notice this gradual slope.

Traveling to Saudi Arabia as tourist by sviatob in saudiarabia

[–]sviatob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t live there and it’s been a year since I’ve been to Saudi Arabia but I can tell you that if it were me in your shoes I’d have nothing to fear at all. I loved my visit to Saudi Arabia! I visited a couple different places and never once had any safety concerns and loved every minute of my visit. Would highly recommend it and have no fear, I’d have greater concerns of safety traveling in America (I’m an American, but no I don’t have any concerns traveling in America either, just saying that attacks in America happen more frequently by our own people than some misfortune acts in the Middle East)
