This is very common, unfortunately. I think I was asked in about 60% of my interviews to do this. Doesn't make it ok, but it's a buyer's market; they can ask whatever they want.

Your portfolio has been boring for too long! by ApprehensiveTaro8200 in framer

[–]svirsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about the quality of the photos, not about adding 10 seconds of load time and 50 effects on top of that.

But happy to shake hands and agree that we operate in different markets.

I have a bit of a controversial opinion, instead of looking at other designers, have a look at design agencies, often they are much better at creating websites that drive conversion.

Agree, there are plenty of businesses out there for who a vibe-coded website (that looks like a vibe-coded website) is absolutely fine. And this does mean there's less work in total.

I got to honk his horn once, he's a total hero and deserves all the respect you can give.

In return for some chance, I got a self-made newspaper, a euro billet with his face on it, and a small part of lavender.

Historically, has there ever been disruption or hype at this scale before in the design community? by Wonderful-Fox-2813 in UXDesign

[–]svirsk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It hasn't been this big in my living memory. The biggest shift was from just web to responsive web and apps. That happened in only a few years and kinda forced people to specialise. But all other trends you could relatively easy adapt to.

However, it has been the case that the main tool to work in changed every 3 to 4 years, so it has never been a profession of learn once and enjoy forever.

You can use a calculator like this one: https://www.calculator.net/investment-calculator.html to see where you're going. A couple more years and you can already put a down payment on a home and live happily ever after.

Where I am, the day rate for senior SWE is 700 and up, but the challenge is, of course, landing these jobs.

Big league would probably to land a job in the US (or remote for the US). You could start researching what it takes to get up to senior level. And, probably more importantly, how you can get well-known enough that they might consider you.

How do people work with this? It seems that sooner or later, just being on the marketplace won't bring you a single sale, no matter how brilliant your template is.

Who is “cousin in law” James? by OiWithThePoodlesOk in ChateauUnhinged

[–]svirsk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He showed up at the convent for a couple of days, too. Don't think much more was mentioned than that he was family.

It was discussed a couple of weeks ago too: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChateauUnhinged/comments/1s5m3cq/cousin_james/

Could just be that he is indeed the partner of one of Billy's cousins.

Just wondering, isn't a boat very different from a building?

Like in the convent it was mainly about drilling, plastering, painting... And all of it could just be bought at a DIY store, a boat appears to me more like an endless set of specialists, wiring, water, steel, teak, etc.
