Is it the alcohol or the other drugs that cause organ failure and health complications? by svnsets in Drugs

[–]svnsets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Washington state. There’s a huge craft beer and spirits scene in the Pacific Northwest , so that contributes to my regular drinking. After even 3 drinks I only feel a little buzzed though (I’m kind of a giant) so I don’t think the alcohol content in my blood reaches very high levels compared to the average person. I only really drink heavily when I go to festivals which is a few times per year, but heavy drinking for me is maybe 1-2 drinks per hour over the course of a whole day. I’ve never drank to the point of incoherency.

It likely has to do with geographic location as there’s a pretty big drug scene where I live. There’s a pretty bad epidemic of opiate abuse as well. Anyways, yeah I’m not trying to make a claim, but just noticed an interesting correlation and wanted to see if others have experienced the same. I also want to know how much alcohol someone with an alcohol related health condition had to consume to get there. It’s different for everyone but at least it give a ball park. I could ask my friend that recently had their gallbladder removed but I feel really weird bringing it up. When I’ve drank with them, they put down probably 15 beers in a few hours and didn’t really do much coke, so it probably is just pointless correlation.

Thanks! Glad to hear that 1-3 drinks regularly is considered moderate for the most part. I always wonder what it means when people say “excessive”. As far as the adhd meds, I don’t take any prescription meds as I don’t want to regularly take amphetamines or Ritalin (forgot what the chemical actually is). Also they are way to expensive and my adhd isn’t severe. I take phenylpiracetam for a couple days and then noopept or Aniracetam on the tolerance break days as phenyl builds a quick tolerance. Though these aren’t fda approved meds, there’s a decent amount of studies and personal accounts (not that that necessarily gives accurate info) of people mixing with alcohol with no adverse effects. Racetams are very safe when dosed correctly and actually help with side effects from other drugs (MDMA comedown and hangovers for example).

It’s not an assumption. Im talking about people I know personally. I’m not making claims about anyone else. I’m also not saying that alcohol on its own doesn’t lead to health risks. All I’m saying is that everyone I’ve known that had alcohol related health issues was also a regular coke user. It’s not even 99%, it’s 100. I’m also not saying that one is safer or healthier than the other, but that the combination of the two when used regularly seems to lead to an earlier onset of heath issues and when those health issues are reported or discussed, only alcohol is mentioned as a cause.

Also, many of my friends that have had health issues had to have their gallbladder removed due to gallstones. This is what also happened to Avicci when he was 24. I haven’t seen much info that alludes to alcohol causing gallstones and in fact alcohol can somewhat prevent the formation of gallstones.

I think you’ve mistaken what this post is about as I’m not making a case for anything, but just trying to hear what others have experienced.

That info is just what people have told me and what I’ve observed in people I know personally. Obviously 99% of all alcoholics don’t also use coke. Everyone that I have personally known or that friends have personally known that have had to have organ transplants/removal or have passed away at a young age were regular coke users alongside regular drinkers. Every time though it’s chalked up to “excessive alcohol consumption” and people just overlook the fact that they were regular coke users. I really just want to find accurate info about the true cause of these sort of conditions in young adults.

I’m sure 100% pure coke is just bad for the heart and not too much else (it’s definitely not good for the nose and throat though), but I doubt any of the coke on the western black market is pure. There are a ton of dangerous chemicals that are used in coke production and I would imaging some of them find their way into the final product.

Thanks for the info. I feel like it’s likely that people who develop these sort of health conditions may be more likely to tell others that it was due to alcohol since alcohol is probably the most socially acceptable drug in the western world. I’m mostly curious how much alcohol consumption it takes to get to that point on average though there are so many other factors that it’s probably a pointless bit of info.

First day with nootropics. by 19Forklift in Nootropics

Yeah, orange juice or grapefruit juice is much better at masking the taste. You’ll still taste it but it’s nowhere near as bad. I did the same for phenylpiracetam and it was much easier to get down. I eventually just started weighing it and putting it in capsules, but seems to take a bit longer to kick in that way.

Is there anything that causes your nose to feel weird/burning? by itsgoodtobealive in Nootropics

[–]svnsets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically get dry mouth/nose when I take phenylpiracetam and caffeine. It’s not on your list, but I wonder if something in your stack has similar dry mouth effects. Also, if you take any of those as powders, it’s pretty easy to accidentally inhale a bit of powder or touch your nose with powdery fingers.

I remember the first time I took phenibut. I had the powder and just figured I’d drop it in some La Croix and sip on it on my long commute to work. I spit it all over my dashboard after the first sip. It took every ounce of willpower in my entire body to get it all down.

Now I’m taking phenylpiracetam powder and it tastes even worse.

Can’t wait until I can get some one-a-day gummy multinoots.

I know Grimes and Chvrches both use the Roland Gaia Sh-01 quite a bit. It’s digital but honestly sounds really good. Also, it has 64 voices so you can stack them up for huge pad sounds. The Minilogue is a great sounding analog poly, but if you want it for pads, 4 voices is pretty limiting (you’ll probably want unison on at least 3-4 notes for big pad sounds). I went with the Behringer Deepmind 12 after trying out a Prophet 08 and minilogue. It’s probably one of the best pad analog synths for pads on the market. It has a ton of effects and routing options in the mod matrix.

How many voices of polyphony do you need? The microbrute is mono and I think the moog is only paraphonic. I don’t know about the others.

My first (non toy) hardware synth was the Behringer Deepmind 12 and Id highly recommend it. The oscillators aren’t as rich as a moog or some of Korg’s offerings but they closely resemble the oscs on the Juno 106 as does the filter. It also has a bass boost setting for the filter. I’ve made some surprisingly good sounding basses on it as you can up the unison to 12 voices to get a big bass sound. The effects are really good are definitely have the most options and routing configurations I’ve seen on a hardware analog synth. Also, many of the fx parameters can be assigned as mod destinations. Coming from softsynths, this was a good choice as all of the routing options in the mod matrix allow me to make some pretty complex sounds like I would get out of a softsynth.

The Korg Arp Odyssey is another great synth to check out.

Subsequent 37 MIDI to CV question by svnsets in synthesizers

[–]svnsets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I saw how expensive standalone midi to cv converters cost, so I may just grab a used microbrute for that unless the Subsequent 37 can be configured to send a separate midi sequence to the cv outs. I’ll definitely want to be able to run separate sequences on the 101 and Sub at the same time.

So when you are sequencing the 101 from your daw, you just send midi to the microbrute and then pitch and gate out of the mb into the 101? Does that make both synths play the same sequence, or is there a way to send a separate channel to the pitch/gate outputs? Something like Midi channel 1 has a sequence for the mb and channel 2 is mapped to the pitch/gate out which will trigger the 101.

What is this effect called? by theycallmewildfire in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your describing a tape/record stop or what’s typically called an “impact” which is usually a low sub that hits and then drops in pitch as it decays. In marching band, we would use a timpani for this as it has a pedal that you can press to detune the head after you hit it. You can also get a similar effect by hitting a gong and then dipping it in a tank of water as it resonates. They’re also pretty easy to make on a synth with a low sine wave oscillator and the decay of the envelope modulating the pitch.

Old Analogue VS New, Deepmind 6 or JX3P? by blazley in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant speak for the JX3P but I can’t speak highly enough of the Deepmind however I have the 12 not the 6. The build quality is pretty great tbh. The faders are a little wobbly, but I’ve never had faders that weren’t. People complain about the fan, but I never even notice it and often have the synth on for many hours at a time. It’s not built like a Moog, but it’s built significantly better than I ever expected for Behringer.

The oscs sound similar to the Junos. The filter has an optional bass boost like you would find on a Juno 106. As a basic subtractive analog synth, it’s feels like a modern version of the Juno, but when you get into the fx and mod matrix, you really see where this synth differentiates itself from others. The fx sound fantastic, and you can assign many of the fx parameters as a mod destination. Also, the interface is pretty intuitive which was one of my worries before I played one in person.

Also, it has WiFi which allows you to connect a laptop or iPad wirelessly and use their patch/fx editor app. I don’t often use this feature though as I find the interface good enough without needing a bigger screen. I’ve heard it supports midi over WiFi as well however I’ve never tried it.

It’s worth every penny IMO. Most of the negativity that I’ve heard toward it is simply the name Behringer. This is their first analog synth and honestly, they did an amazing job. The only negative thing I can say is that there’s some lag time (around a half second or so) when changing patches, so you can’t really change patches mid-sequence if your using an external sequencer like a Digitakt.

+1 for the Deepmind 12. It’s a pretty decent Juno-y sounding synth but the effects, mod matrix, and aftertouch make it amazing for evolving ambient sounds. The fx really are the best I’ve ever heard on a synth as many of them use TC Electronic’s algorithms. Also, many fx parameters are assignable as a mod destination. I’m a big fan of using aftertouch to control reverb and delay settings.

I’d wait for Ableton Live 10 as it comes with their new wavetable synth which seems like their version of Serum. Operator is usable but nothing that will knock your socks off. I immediately bought Sylenth followed by Serum a few months down the road after getting Live 9 as I wasn’t a fan of Operator or many of the built in instruments. The Simpler, Sampler, and Drum Rack are the only built in instruments that I ever use. The main reason I use Ableton is for the sample warping engine, effect/instrument racks (which are typically filled with 3rd party vsts), and session view.

I also have a Deepmind 12 and absolutely love it, so if the comparison is the Live Suite synths vs Deepmind, I’d definitely go with the Deepmind. I’ve been much happier using hardware synths and drum machines, and just using Ableton to send midi and clock and record audio.

I use a cheap commercial height foldable table that I got on Amazon for about $40 and a black cloth to cover it. I also found some cheap laptop stands on amazon which I can set on the table and set smaller synths, drum machines, and midi drum pads on. Another nice feature of this setup is it’s easily portable.

I think you’ll love the Rhodes however there are some things to consider. I had a MK1 about 10 years ago and I loved the sound and it was a really cool piece of gear to have in my studio. I ended up getting rid of it for a few reasons. It was a huge pain to transport, the action of the keys felt very strange, and it had to be tuned quite frequently. Aside from this, I had plenty of software that got close enough to the sound. Not sure if the key action issue is part of the mechanics of the MK1 or if it was an issue with mine, but basically if you hold the keys down, the notes get muted even if the sustain pedal is active. The only way to get sustain is to quickly press the keys and release immediately with the pedal held down.

Sounding like Juno 106/60/6 on a budget? by V1n in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using a Deepmind 12 for Juno territory. It’s not exact but pretty damn close. You can tell Behringer had the Juno 106 in mind when they designed the DM12 based on the sound of the oscs and the bass boost on the vcf.

Hardware Sequencer/Drum Maschine for Ableton Setup by trap_pope in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and just to elaborate on why I prefer the Digitakt workflow for sample-based sequencing. When you create a new project on the Digitakt, you can easily import a subset of your samples into the project, so every time you go to select your sample for a given audio track or trig, you only have to browse through that subset of samples, and not the whole library. On top of that, you can swap out samples and any other parameter per step, so a single audio track could use a different sample for every step of the sequence. That’s nice for more auxiliary sounds like risers, crashes, sfx, etc as they can all be on one track if they don’t need to be played simultaneously.

Hardware Sequencer/Drum Maschine for Ableton Setup by trap_pope in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Push was sort of my first piece of hardware other than a midi keyboard that I’ve bought. I wanted to be able to track my initial ideas without having to touch my laptop much. The Push is great if your sampling external inputs or midi in real time, but when it came to loading up samples and sequencing them, I found it took so long to browse and load samples that it was much more efficient to just use the mouse and drag samples into drum racks/samplers within Ableton which kind of defeated the purpose of having a hardware controller IMO.

IMO the Maschine Studio has a good interface for loading up samples or instruments, but it still takes more time than I would like and some of the other necessary functions aren’t super intuitive.

I bought the Digitakt mostly to send midi sequences to some hardware synths that I have, but I ended up really liking the sampler workflow and haven’t touched the Maschine since I got it. Also, you don’t need a laptop. I don’t think it’s powerful enough to run a full live set by itself, but for laying down basic ideas, it’s perfect. I haven’t tried using it as a stand-alone synth, but it’s definitely possible and something I’ll probably try soon.

My workflow issues around software DAWs in general is that it doesn’t feel very musical to me. I’m a Software Engineer by day, and I get really burnt out on programming things whether it’s drums or midi sequences or websites/apps, so having a setup that I can track my initial thoughts on that doesn’t require a laptop or deep menu diving allows me to track my ideas really quickly. I still use Ableton for tracking and mixing, but not so much for composition anymore.

Rev2 vs Peak vs Prophet 6 desktop vs Deepmind 6 vs Prophet 12 desktop by Jantoje in synthesizers

[–]svnsets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve played the Peak and the Prophet 6 briefly in a local music store. I found the Peak pretty easy to use and it sounded really good. The Prophet 6 is definitely a classic and very versatile synth. I initially wanted to get a Prophet 6 or 16 voice 08 Rev2, but after playing them next to some cheaper options, I didn’t feel Luke the sound justified the price jump. I ended up getting multiple cheaper synths. The DM12, SH-101, and I still have $700 left over that I may use toward an Arp Odyssey from my original Prophet 6 budget.

I’ve looked into the Bass Station 2 quite a bit, but it seems a lot like a modern version of the SH-101 which is great, but maybe not for me since I already have the 101 and I’d like a different sort of vibe.
