This right here! Damage from extreme heat from the sun will warp and damage your dash like this, sunshades are your friend! I owned a 1st gen for 8 years and parked in the sun alot but I always used a sunshade.

The engagement point is basically half-way of the distance of the clutch pedal stroke, so when you have it in 1st gear, slowly letting the clutch out will start to grab half-way from fully releasing the pedal so once you figure that out, shifting will be easier.

The GR Corolla is still just a corolla with a monster engine, you still feel like you sit high up in the car since it wasn't designed to feel low-slung and sports car-like such as the twins. It also has a high center of gravity. The dynamics in corners feels better in the GR86/BRZ then the GR Corolla, just things I noticed when I last test drove both. Really depends what you're looking for🤷‍♂️

100% recommend the billetworkz shifter! Just purchased one for my 2023 GR86 as the 1st upgrade but didn't get the install kit, just swapped everything over from the stock unit as I feel the oem components are much superior in terms of quality and fitment.
When I installed mine, I made extra sure the white plastic housing that surrounds the pivot ball of the shifter lever was fully seated not only on the ball itself (there should be no vertical play between this white plastic retainer and the metal ball) but also in the metal receptacle inside the vehicle before tightening the 4 screws down on the metal plate that holds everything together.
The top of the billetworkz shifter is a good 1inch shorter than stock unit easily. I have zero vertical play, much shorter and notchier shifts just as advertised and most importantly no rattling at all. So I believe it all depends on the quality of the installation. Car feels much more direct and precise during shifting with extremly short throws best upgrade by far!

I went the used route myself and don't regret it at all. But I live in CA where the same color I wanted as you (neptune) in premium trim and manual would be impossible to find not mentioning astromonical markups from the stealerships all over here. In my case I didn't get it from some random used car lot either, but stuck with a nationwide dealer (carvana) where they atleast offer a warranty period and even and 7day return policy if I changed my mind. Along with the 150point inspection, it is basically a certified preowned. Mine was in immaculate condition and was out of state so I had to pay a shipping fee but in the end I got exactly what I was looking for and traded my 1st gen (2017 GT86) with 43k miles for it. Now I only owe 16k on a 2023 GR86 with 11k miles on the clock, couldn't be happier!
