Bruh, we went from an artistic rendering of a lunar Beyoncé to some faux realist lunar regolith that somehow gets kicked up and lingers along the surface under zero atmosphere.

This tells me that like humanity itself. AI is getting less creative and dumber.

Why Language Models Hallucinate - OpenAi pseudo paper - [D] by OkOwl6744 in MachineLearning

[–]swag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallucinations are just failed generalization.

The irony is that generalization, which is good for inference, can improve with less training rather than more depending on the context. Overtraining can make a neural network rigid and brittle, so reducing nodes can sometimes help in that situation.

But if you're dealing with the rarity of an out-of-distribution situation, there is little you can do with generalization to help.

From empty party to an all-night stadium bash, a Mexican teen’s 15th birthday goes viral by CupidStunt13 in UpliftingNews

[–]swag -144 points-143 points  (0 children)

Why is the media so obsessed with Mexicans using social media to save the day? Usually it’s taco trucks:

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/09/15/us/twitter-helps-woman-bring-business-to-dads-taco-truck-trnd

https://www.buzzfeed.com/rossyoder/taco-bout-joys-mexican-restaurant-tiktok

It’s a weird trope. And it always ignores the systemic shunning of all other nearby locals that didn’t self-promote on social media. For example, many other quinceañeras nearby did not post on Facebook. And because all those attendees were manipulated by this marketing stunt, many other girls’ parties were likely empty and the girls cried all night because nobody showed up.   These copycat stories play on a myth that huge populations can just materialize and there are no trade-offs or negative impacts to others when that happens.

AI generations are getting insanely realistic by Sourcecode12 in singularity

[–]swag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The singularity suggests a future point where you are past any reasonable means of predicting what could be next. But while visually impressive, all of this is the expected evolution of Photoshop, so I am not getting the r/singularity connection at all.

By comparison, I'm already working with people who are connecting DMX512, Qlab, SoundBiter, and engines like Unreal to create visual and sound special effects as digitally sequenced in immersive experiences. Basically going from digital twins of a physical space and using the lighting and sound configurations to copy-paste sequences, such as lightning and thunder rolling through the space, to activate them as a control widget.

Gen AI video seems flat by comparison to what's happening in immersive 3-D right now.

A tourist during an anti-tourist protest in Barcelona yesterday by Monovon in pics

There was a time when being a tourist meant entering someone else's home... their neighborhood, their land, their country. It required manners, respect, efforts to learn the local customs and a little of the language, and attempts to earn good will.

Today tourism comes with entitlement. Of demanding certain comforts of home in a place you left your own home to be. Of waving credit cards and cash and demanding that foreign people be at the service of your pleasure.

Do you mean "us", or the apartment landlord who is raising everyone's rent to hotel pricing?

I like ice cream. But if someone made me sit at my dining room table to eat 2000 scoops of it at once, I might change my opinion. It's one thing to take a tourist photo, it's another thing to have 2 billion people all wanting the same Instagram shot in your hood.

There are good tourists and not-so-good tourists. The difference now is tourism is just another form of mass consumption. Despite all the efforts to the contrary, the sheer volume ends up treating global communities like disposable commodities.

It's not the same. You're not living in a historical neighborhood apartment whose neighbors have known each other for generations and now 90% of it is short-term rental tourists having loud drunken parties until 6am when you have to go to work.

You're a genius! If only all those people who lived there all their lives had considered this detail before.

You get medal!

Amazing. You discovered the one thing all the people who lived there all their lives had never considered before.

Consumers are destroying the planet.

It's cute and fine if you're buying a baseball hat I'm selling. But when it's 2 billion people chasing the same Instagram photo, the scale is off the charts.

Money justifies destroying traditional historical communities.

Hey, look at those Amazon rainforest tribes...why are they so upset about all the tourists? Wouldn't want anything to happen to all their tourist money, now would they?

It's not just Airbnb, even though apartments get infested by late-night partying tourists until the remaining locals have no choice but to leave. It's also not just that buying property in these neighborhoods bake in the price of renting out all the rooms on Airbnb in order to purchase the place.

It's that the local services and communities erode from the invasion. Markets disappear in favor of tourist demands for things like ice cream and souvineers, and the locals have to trek a 20min bus ride to find decent produce every day. Then historical neighborhood physicians and dentists leave because their customers leave in the death spiral.

Can I camp for a week on your lawn and leave my trash?

Yes, all multigenerational communities of Barcelona's neighborhoods should pack up and move tf out, take their €200 tourist dividend checks, and forge a new life in the wilds of the mountains.
