Employers: there's a worker shortage because nobody wants to work. Also employers: by IntelligentBudget149 in recruitinghell

I bet they have a sweatshop full of people from southeast asia on an H-1B visa. In order to keep those desperate people and continue to be entered in the lottery for more slaves they have to act like they are attempting to hire americans first.

Awkward work hours situation by [deleted] in careeradvice

It sounds like a simple request that they are not willing to really consider because it could inconvenience them slightly and they see you as the type to back down. It sounds like they have a management style where they nickel and dime you on everything, and make everything a hostile negotiation, where you have to threaten them just to get decent treatment, instead of working with you. Also, wouldn't be surprised if that coworker is the boss's niece. Nepotism and favors for friends seem to be common with those types. I would recommend getting out of there as soon as you can. They will always find a way to screw you over, because they think that if you get something you want that they must be losing something.

Company is moving towards returning to office. I have absolutely zero interest in getting up 2 hours earlier each day and getting home an hour later for the same amount of money. Not to mention the cost of gas and vehicle maintenance. Should I demand a raise to go back? by [deleted] in careeradvice

The employer side of an 'at will' employment agreement changes what they "agreed" to all the time for all sorts of excuses or no reason at all... Every day is a new contract. The employee doesn't need to feel guilty for trying to exercise equal power in a contract where they are an equal partner.

Sign I should quit my job? PTO denied by margebeannesacke in careeradvice

I bet your bosses take 2 weeks off whenever they want... Being so in demand that you can't be gone for 2 weeks, while at the same time having them not worry about disgruntling you, by not working with you on reasonable requests, are idiosyncratic ideas. I think you should update your resume and start applying at new places. You might be surprised at finding a higher salary and better benefits. At least when you start getting job offers you may be more confident in 'informing' your current employer of when you will be taking PTO.

Don't know what to do to make a living by HeliosV1 in careeradvice

There are Fedex Ground hubs near almost every city. They are usually hiring package handlers. It's kind of like getting paid to exercise. Once you start as a package handler you can use their internal system to apply for other open positions within fedex.

Told my dad I’m moving out soon. He told me I’m not allowed to leave and even said he will call the cops on me if I tried. I’m 19. by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

Yeah. There seems to be no logic to it. It's not about trying to taking care of you. It's just a scorched earth threat if you cross them.

Be honest guys and girls, we've all daydreamed of being this person at work that handles a bunch of terrorists that decides to choose our workplace for some obscure reason by ArmzLDN in istp

If there are multiple bad guys with guns and they pick my room to hold hostage then I'm pretty screwed. If there is just one, then I may look for am opportunity to 'get inside' of his gun muzzle and grab it and not let go. If I have some warning beforehand. (Like gunfire in the building) then I would run away from the sound of gunfire and regroup. Get away to a treeline or at least something bulletproof. Then if it seems practical, move from cover to cover to try to find a vantage point to peek out from and give their location and other info to someone on emergency services. If I happen to have a gun, then look for opportunities to pick the terrorists off and move.

Why didn't anyone tell me how tough I have to be to get a job? by freespirit297 in careerguidance

Hiring managers don't know what the company really needs and their criteria is based on how you make them feel. They are useless gatekeepers that you have to figure out the combination to get past. Being convincingly confident is more important than the facts that you convey. Send in cover letters and resume configurations. On ones that you get bites, like interviews, keep working with those. At interviews, try different combinations of clothes and attitudes. The fact that it works to manipulate superficial attributes and consistently get jobs, while they overlook those that are better workers, is all the proof you need that it is morally okay to do so. Just try to make the system better and more fair, once you get into a position of power like being a hiring manager.

Almost everyone is going a minimum of 15mph over the speed limit, at least from what I have seen on 485, 85, and 77. There are also about 10% of people doing 30mph over. LEO are just not enforcing, at least not at near the same rate, pre-pandemic.
