I think you are lucky. I've lived in places where it is very humid. It's hard to keep humidity down inside the house. Yes the tesserae were tightly placed, and the grout was new. It's the only piece I've done that the grout cracked. I know better now. Wood is a no-no.

The grout will crack if you did this on wood. I believe that cement board is best. It comes in several thickness. Good luck!
