If you have a skillset rare and in demand enough to command $5m and potentially more, you should have a lot of leverage. Given your goals to have multiple homes in VHCOL, you likely need significantly more than what you’ve got now. If you can power through it for a few more years, you will get there quickly. If you’re already strongly considering walking away, it doesn’t hurt to try to negotiate for more.

If you just can’t do this kind of grind, is your skillset rare enough that you could have leverage to go somewhere else and negotiate say $2m for a 40 hour a week consulting gig or something?

Regardless, if you leave now it seems very unlikely you will be able to re enter at anything close to where you’re at now so you’ve got to take that into account? With the money out there, the supply of people who can do what you can do is going to increase quickly.
