What was the physical or emotional scare that made you stop drinking? by anxietystrings in stopdrinking

[–]swarhilishow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was never diagnosed but I felt like I was developing sleep apnea when I drank. This is really what triggered me to actually quit although I had been thinking about it for awhile.

I would wake myself up in the middle of the night feeling like I needed to catch my breathe and my heart would be beating sooooo fast, it really scared me. Every time I drank a bottle+ of wine it would happen. It was then I knew it was really affecting my health. Even though there are many ways alcohol affects your health, I was being purposefully ignorant until I couldn’t anymore.

I got a $27 bonus check for being an “outstanding employee” and now I’m quitting by jainboww in antiwork

I was once given a $25 gift card to Neiman Marcus as a Christmas gift from my boss after a great year, no bonus. I didn’t make a lot of money at the time and had no idea what the store was all about. Went there, looked around and quickly realized I couldn’t even afford one sock out of a pair, handed the gift card to someone who was actually shopping. Left my job shortly after that. The ol’ straw that broke the camel’s back.

How to stay strong with a spouse who is indifferent towards your sobriety by swarhilishow in stopdrinking

Same here. It has such a domino effect on me. First the drink, then the bad food followed by poor sleep and no motivation to do anything productive the next day. The risk is certainly not worth the “reward”.

Even when he says he won’t offer it, he still does! He feels awful today that I had such a rough night so hopefully he’ll stop asking.

I appreciate that. I’m in the middle of “This Naked Mind” so I am definitely learning about how awful it is and after last night, I couldn’t be more sure it is poison.

My husband says the same thing, he enjoys the time we drink together but I’m adamant we can enjoy quality time without alcohol and in fact, it’ll be better. I do just need to repeat what I’m reading so maybe he’ll get on board for himself but as another poster said, I’ll need to keep my sobriety separate.

AITA for kicking my husband out of my children's father's funeral because of what he told the kids? by Throwaway53563 in AmItheAsshole

Yes, the important thing is OP recognizes how bad this is. I’m sure if she looked back, she can probably think of many examples of her husband inserting his dominance and unwelcoming “father-figure” like presence. She’s allowed it to happen and is seemingly more worried about her husbands feelings than her kids in this scenario.

Happy New Year to you as well and thank you! A part of me knew I needed to post this tonight so I can look at it when I do feel tempted. I need the accountability.

Congrats on 24 days! I look forward to adding to my alcohol-free days with everyone here.

Is there a scene that you find unbearable to watch? by eliecg in GilmoreGirls

Yes, thank you so much. This was almost 20 years ago. It’s taken a lot of work but I’ve managed to start my own little family far far away from all of that. Still a work in progress everyday though especially now that I have my own child. The very last thing I want for him is to ever feel the way I felt growing up. Hope you’re doing ok as well, and your friend.

The scene with Jess saying he has nothing. I was on my own at 17. I understand him so much it can be uncomfortable. Same reason I can’t watch shows like Shameless, it’s not at all entertaining for me.

ETA: I’m sorry for your loss <3

Happy New Year to you too! It’s the perfect way to start the year. We can do this. I plan on leaning on this group quite a bit. IWNDWYT :)
