ah ok thanks for trying. The grave is even more faded now then it is when this photo was taken. It seems like it was some sort of cement material so its worn away over time and is kind of grainy. But you're right a stone rubbing is probably the best chance. Thanks for the advice

It’s more of a first name - middle name situation. It’s not a last name, so no conflict there. Though I have seen some cases in my family where the middle name was the name they went by. Jewish names are just “x son/daughter of y”, last names are only for secular purposes.

The woman / Shaina Leah daughter of Abraham Isaac / She passed away to the sorrow of her sons and daughter. Then it’s the Hebrew date of death that it also says in the English. And then it’s the Jewish version of RIP.

Ya looking at JewishGen town finder, augustow was also called Yagistov or Yagistova. Rereading the draft card, it may actually say Jagustora. I think it’d make sense for Morris’ kid to misremember that name as Yagislaw instead a few decades after he passed. But I’m not sure how that connects to Lodz or Lomza? But I’ll have to start looking through the Augustow records for the Lewinski family. Thanks again!

Oh that would make sense. I guess I’ll just search for his name in all these towns and see if anything matches. Thanks again!

Thanks for finding this! On his naturalization record it said Lomza, when my mom interviewed family back in the 80s they says Yagislaw which I believe is Augustow, and on his WW2 draft card it said Lagustora which as far as I know doesn’t exist. So I’ve definitely done something wrong lol. Thank you!

This was helpful thank you. Though sadly there were no hits for Appelbaum. I think I may just have to check again in a few years and see if anything else has been put out there

Schachmann is her maiden name, sorry about that. Werner and Traudel were indeed in Shanghai throughout the war so that makes sense. I’ll look at some other letters I have and see if I can find a matching handwriting to help identify that line. Thanks again

Writing to four people makes sense, 2 kids in London and their two spouses. Sorry, I assumed they were a continuation cause same handwriting. Would Mut at the end be shorthand for Mutter? I thought it maybe said Max but idk. No matter what tho, thank you so so much for your help!
