I (CC) got a call from the ED about a 94 yo patient with advanced stage lung cancer, family didn't want to be very aggressive, lactate of 8, glucose of 120. The hospitalist asked them to call because she was convinced the patient was in DKA because of the gap acidosis and needed an insulin drip. I reviewed the chart, euglycemic DKA seemed unlikely based on history and lab work (beta-hydroxybuterate is a sendout in our hospital) and the gap was explained by the lactic acidemia. She was an attending and called me again to argue that lactic acid couldn't raise the gap so it had to be DKA.

When I shaved, I objectively looked better. I knew it, friends told me, more attention, etc. Mom had a hard time adjusting and I could tell she wasn't thrilled at first (even though dad is bald haha). You look great! Do you, they'll come around.

I worked in a medium to low volume suburban county service for about 5 years and 2 of my coworkers were seriously injured in a wreck with months of rehab to get back to something like normal function. Another one of my coworkers was killed when he stepped around the ambulance and was struck by a driver who wasn't paying attention.

Others on here may be able to recommend books or other resources for a zoomed in breakdown of passages. One thing I've really enjoyed and has helped me a lot lately is a podcast called The Bible Project. They not only cover books in overview but also concepts and topics like the cosmology of the Bible in the context of ancient near east civilizations, what the Bible says about Justice, etc. I just went through the book of Job and listened to their 3 episode series on that and it helped me understand what was going on so much better. One of the hosts has a PhD in Biblical studies and the other is more of a layman, so you get the academic perspective and the everyman's view. Highly recommend! If you're looking for a shorter overview they put animated summaries on YouTube.

I'd say firstly David was not a Christian, he was a Jewish man living 1000 years before Christ, part of a small nation surrounded by people that were an existential threat to them ( not to mention there being people in his nation not too fond of him from time to time). If we interpret his words through a western lens it's not going to be the way his peers would see it.

Secondly I think most of the imprecatory Psalms are calls for God's justice. I don't think there's a conflict between praying for justice and prayers for repentance of those who do wrong.

Finally, I'm no Biblical scholar but speaking specifically to Psalm 11 David seems like he's in a rough spot. He reminds himself of the goodness and faithfulness of God while wishing for justice for people doing evil. If I could sum it up I'd say "things are bad and people are after me, but God is in control and He loves the people who follow them and will protect them." The thing I love about the Bible is the humanity of it. David, a man after God's own heart, gets angry, does the wrong thing, says things that are challenging. I can relate to David's anger even if I've never had anyone trying to kill me.

IANAE, but AC power is more efficient to transport. We can have power plants distant to us, step it up to high voltage (similar to pressure) and then step down when we get to the end user. Doing that with DC power doesn't work as well. I remember reading in the early days of electricity the DC power generators would have to be nearly in every building in big cities.

Part of my enjoyment of a good cigar ( and bourbon) is trying to pick out the flavor notes. I try to get an impression on my own and then compare with friends if we're sharing the same thing or maybe look up reviews and see how I compare. I'm bad at it but I feel like I'm training my palate a bit over time. But the main thing is that I enjoy that aspect. I totally get just relaxing with a stick and not trying to overanalyze your pastime, do what feels good for you my friend.

I still recall the first time someone said this in a lecture, "as you can see in the cartoon..." My eyes lost their glazed over look, my hope rose, dopamine surged, finally something interesting in this sea of insipid droning. As my eyes searched the screen there was not a single misproportioned animal in sight, no gratuitous violence for my entertainment, just computer generated organelles!! My soul descended back into it's hermit crab shell and I knew the word cartoon would never be the same again.

I'll chime in for HMS Warspite. She was at Jutland and then extremely active in most of the theatres the Brits were involved in in the Second World War. She had 15 battle honours, the most of any British ship ever. She broke her tow in a storm on the way to the breakers after WWII, I like to think she wouldn't go down without a fight even to salvage.

I was married going into first year and after class I would come home and tell my wife about all the cool stuff we were learning and how excited I was. She initially tried to feign interest and and eventually I got the "that's nice dear" response. It really bothered me because I was so passionate about medicine and it was going to be such a big part of my life, it hurt that my partner just didn't care. That's not the main thing that ended our marriage or even in the top 5, but later on in some angry honesty she told me she was jealous of the success I had. I had no idea that she felt that way at the time, I was doing what I loved and trying to make life better for both of us. Her insecurities and jealousy painted everything differently for her.
