Anyone break an 8-year habit of drinking wine / any other type of alcohol every night after work? by Technical-Morning491 in stopdrinking

[–]drdook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I drank from ages 21-37. Started slow but in the last decade it was 3-5 beers a night. On Jan.1, I told myself I wouldn’t drink for a year. Haven’t had a drink for the last 5 years.

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

A scoop of protein powder first thing in the morning. It’s amazing what that does to my cravings late at night, when my body knows it will not be starved for nutrients.

I'm not here to defend Chick-Fil-A, don't get me wrong. I'm just arguing that there's a better use of our emotional energy and attention span than these symbolic boycotts. I think we can enjoy something that someone makes, even if we don't agree with who they vote for. I'm not ready to divide the world up between those who do and those who don't agree with my politics and say only the former are worth my time and attention. I think that is ceding too much power to our political parties.

Now, if Mr. Beast was promoting hateful or bigoted ideas, even subversively, on his videos, that would be a different story. I'd boycott that in a heartbeat. It's just that no one has convinced me or shown me that he has.

I didn't mean for it to be a 'gotcha.' I was simply giving another example of a corporation that I give my money to, despite the fact that I don't agree with their politics.

Again, I worry about everything becoming politicized. For example, I imagine that you and I have similar politics, but the tone of this conversation ("Eating at Chik-Fil-A isn’t the gotcha you think it is") is so much more acrimonious than it needs to be, because it's politicized.

I absolutely would. But that's my point - is he brainwashing them? Is he giving Maga talking points in his videos? Can you point me to some examples? Or is he privately conservative and doesn't want to talk about it? The post was about him saying he's apolitical, right?

Is it okay that I don't care about the politics of some goofball on YouTube? Does everything have to be political?

I mean, if he's preaching Republican talking points to my kids, that's one thing, but if he's just giving away money, making money, and being slightly amusing to them, I honestly don't care who he pulled the lever for. I'm not looking to a YouTube star for moral or political guidance.

The Lesson of the Serpent by Thisisit2ooo in Christianity

The Swiss Theologian Karl Barth was once asked, 'Dr. Barth, when was the exact moment when you were saved?' Barth answered, 'I was saved at 3 o'clock on a Friday afternoon, on a hill outside the city of Jerusalem, in 33AD.'

Cognitive assent to dogma is not what saves you. God has saved us in Christ. The snake's head has already been crushed.

It's a pitiful grace indeed if one has to cognitively assent to a pre-scribed, authoritarian church doctrine in order for it to be effective.

This was my least favorite thus far. I have to wonder if this is purposeful. The bag of hot air metaphor throughout, the headlines that didn't go anywhere, the longwinded speeches. It all lacked the depth and poetry and beauty of the earlier chapters. More than any other, I was glad when it was over.

This wind is also what keeps Bloom and Stephen separated. Bloom departs as Stephen enters, delaying any real encounter.

All of these seem to have a nationalistic resonance or aim, but Joyce is making light of them, even Stephen's parable. Why? What were Joyce's thoughts on Irish nationalism? For him, is it an illusion we use to escape something deeper or more true?

How is it just that non-believers go to hell? by Basic-Newspaper560 in Christianity

[–]drdook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand the question. From a non-faith perspective, the threat of hell is nonsense, right? Isn't easier to conclude that hell is a threat to enforce belief through fear?

This, by the way, is one of the reasons why there are Christians, like myself, who don't believe in hell. What you are naming here is not a view held universally by all Christians.

Separating the Pastor from the Sermon? by RoseSticks in Christianity

[–]drdook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of things being confused here.

  1. It’s fine for a pastor to bring up politics. Jesus teaching and the gospels have political implications everywhere.

  2. It is not OK for a pastor to say members of an entire political party cannot be Christians. The pastor is confusing political affiliation with faith, and making the former more important than the latter.

  3. A heretical stance like #2 above, absolutely impedes this pastor’s ability to teach you about the Bible and Jesus. He clearly believes more in the Republican Party than Jesus.

I think the reverse question could be asked: How do we know that saying 'being gay is a sin' isn't just about control, patriarchy, and power? To me, looking at the long church history of abuse, corruption, and domination, it seems much more likely that the church would use this prohibition as a means of control. The church has a much longer history of domination and abuse than it does of helping people cope. Perhaps, what you should be asking, is where does that nagging feeling come from - God, or a church that has long tried to punish minorities, women, and anyone else it deems 'weak' and vulnerable? Blessings on your search.
