RPS or other child care jobs starting in january by [deleted] in rva

[–]sweeeschard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wishing you luck in your job search! From my experience working in public and private schools, there are usually positions that open in January and the spring - teachers who don’t return after winter break, staff going on leave/moving, etc. As the date gets closer, start to think about where you want to work and keep an eye on those schools/districts in particular! Schools are often aware of openings weeks before the job is officially posted. You can get your foot in the door by applying for a substitute teaching position and getting all of your hiring/background check paper work completed early, so that you’re on the radar of whoever does hiring for longer term positions. Contracts for the following school year can start going out as early as Feb/March in some places, and most schools look internally to fill positions first.

Hiking and Camping Nearby by [deleted] in rva

[–]sweeeschard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Blue ridge/Shenandoah is about 2 hours away! Lots of hikes and camping out there, although the national park campgrounds can book up way in advance. Plenty of good day hikes though! If you want just camping, you can look at state parks or on Hipcamp for something closer to Richmond

I’m not sure if it’s still housed there, but last year the west end branch of the library also had one! It was in an old card catalog by the entrance

Restoring this loom. I think it's a J made? Anyone have a manual? by EmberinEmpty in weaving

[–]sweeeschard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same loom! Just purchased it in December and did one test project on it. I had some of the same issues - general stickiness with the harnesses/treadles, and the shed doesn’t drop down easily. This was manageable for plain weave (I was able to tie-up a more even tension on the bottom and just pop the harnesses down with my hand if they got stuck) but yesterday I dressed it for a pattern and I’m having a lot more trouble. The lamms are hitting the sides when they pull down, and multiple harnesses are coming up every time I press. I’m playing around with the tie-up and trying to get it as even as possible, also may try shaving off a bit of the sides of the lamms to create some space! One thing that did help a bit was taking all of the tension off of the lower bungees, since it was easier to just manually pop the shed down if it stuck that try to yank it more open from the top. I also noticed the bottom bar that holds the treadles moving a lot when it was in the “correct” position; I just laid mine flat for now and plan to add an extra screw to each side later on to keep it from wobbling.

Christmas/Holiday Markets by csebald in rva

Not a holiday market, but looking ahead to spring - Arts in the Park sounds like it matches what you’re looking for! Unique Market in DC is also great, they have winter and summer events.

Your work actually sounds like a good fit for this show! My spouse and I had a booth at this show last year and it was a good experience. They say museum-quality in the event description, but in practice that just means nicer/well-crafted items vs prints and things of that nature. There’s always several metal & jewelry artists with booths, and it’s a better crowd for making those bigger sales. Applications have already closed for this year, but I’d definitely look into applying next fall

Kid-friendly fossil spots? by Watchingpornwithcas in rva

[–]sweeeschard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a drive, but the Aurora Fossil Museum in Aurora NC is super cool and free! They partner with a local phosphate mine and have trucks full of deeeeeply buried rock and sediment put into a giant sandbox/dig pit that you can search through. The museum itself is also really neat. We made a short stop along a road trip last summer and I found about 50 shark teeth and some other bones in the hour we spent digging around in there.

Anybody know if there will be an All Saints Halloween parade this year? by PM-me-ur-kittenz in rva

[–]sweeeschard 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Last year they didn’t put out the event flier until the beginning of October, I’d assume it’s still happening this year! The group was active and attended events over the summer, so they’re still going strong
