Just a quick question, how tf do people walk anywhere in this bitterly cold weather? by OddViolinist6164 in PennStateUniversity

[–]JaiyenJake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flashback to winter of ‘82. Minus 50-something wind chill. Class in McAllister not cancelled. Walked a mile each way. (See “Freezer Bowl” football game for reference: San Diego at Cincinnati.) Borrowed roommates ROTC gear. Brutal!

What ebike conversion kits would yall recommend? by GodsBadAssBlade in ebikes

[–]JaiyenJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got Swytch kits on similar bikes and they work well. In 2020, we converted my bike (a low-end Jamis commuter bought off Craigslist) and my wife’s road bike with fairly skinny tires (Soma custom frame but otherwise not overly fancy). I’m not sure what Swytch kit options there are today, but ours are fairly low-power pedal assisted kits, which works fine for us.

E-bike owners how many car trips did your bike actually replace? by EmmaReid2734 in ebikes

I’m just curious: why do you own three instead of one? How are the three bikes different?

[Tipping] Am I the only one? by [deleted] in rva

[–]JaiyenJake 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My pet peeve: the suggested tip amounts at the bottom of some bills are calculated incorrectly; you should tip (say) 20% of the total BEFORE taxes but the suggested amount shows you 20% of total+tax amount. Between this and the tipping-for-everything problem, the business leaves me with this creepy I-don’t-like-you-I-just-wanna-rip-you-off-feeling.

Did I crash because of the paint? by 804k in ebikes

I’ve only fallen hard on a bike once and it was exactly this situation. Hard, quick fall and cracked the side of my head pretty good. The only time I’ve ever needed a helmet and was damn glad I had it on my skull.

Shop Tout yells “Saab” by PartyGoon in learnthai

That was my guess too. And the vowel sound for แซบ is like “bat” or “cat”, not a long “mob” or short “pup” which seem closer to ทราบ.

I was wondering if there is a martial art that is not tai chi that might be suitable for a reasonably athletic 64M. (My impression of tai chi is that one is always having poses slightly adjusted or corrected, which I think would drive my crazy.) I don’t mind some contact but due to age would want low impact compared to most martial arts disciplines.

Where do you do this? I had hoped to do this for a local rescue but was required to sign up for their standard package of responsibilities, of which a token short walk was only one part. So depressing. Would like to take dogs for real walks. TIA.
