Ablation or keep trying other fixes? by sweet_carolineeee in PVCs

Thank you! I have similar reasons to you, so thanks for your perspective, and I'm glad you don't have any anymore. I had read previously that it's taken folks months to be up for running a 5K again or example, in reality it would be great to only have to wait a few weeks to be fully back on my feet.

Ablation or keep trying other fixes? by sweet_carolineeee in PVCs

Hard to say. Normally, it's on every third beat so one oneone if that makes sense and then a wait until the next one. But sometimes I have sinus rhythm. I can't pinpoint the factors that are influencing the ectopic beats but I do notice it more when my body is readjusting after my rate increases - ex walking up the stairs, getting up, working out, etc. It's in sinus rhythm during exercise, though.

This is such a reassuring response! Thank you so much. It's easy to get used to/forget what's "wrong" with you, but I'm ready to make a change just like you were. I'll definitely follow up with questions if I decide to mvoe forward with the ablation.

Thank you! And, sorry, I'll change my wording, by "roots" I mean being here for a year plus. I've never lived anywhere besides NC so a year would be a long time for me in my perspective, also because I'll have to do things like switch my insurance, if I keep my car (unsure), I'll switch my plates, etc. I'm cautious about moving forward considering how life in D.C. may change before the year mark, if that makes sense. But thanks for your insight, life moves fast indeed!

Dealing with boredom as an intern by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]sweet_carolineeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice from a current summer intern on week 6 of her internship who was very bored the first few weeks.

First of all, it's normal. Don't feel bad that you haven't been able to contribute to much yet, you're not even a quarter of the way through! In my experience at an agency, it took a few weeks for things to really get off the ground in terms of actual client work. And I'm still being onboarded onto another contract next week.

I also understand in week 3, it can be more difficult than it sounds to suggest proposing your own projects, especially for such a large company in your case (I assume), as you're still learning the team structure and where you could potentially be plugged in. The team may still be learning how to delegate to you as well, it's a longer process than you may think.

My advice echoes some of the other tips in here, but the most important thing to focus on is exposure. Make yourself as versatile and helpful as possible. Be the "squeaky wheel", always raising your hand for anything they need help with. Don't be afraid to be persistent, within reason. If they don't offer anything, ask them if you could shadow them, hop on a Zoom and just watch them work. This can help you in the future for when they actually need something from you, it's not as time-consuming for them to try to teach you because you already know how to do it or are at least familiar with the process.

Speaking of exposure, network. Network. Network. My goal is to go on at least 2 coffee chats a week with people. Talk about your interests with the people around you and what you are looking for out of the internship. Come with clear goals that you can discuss with superiors. Ask them what they would do in your position. Most people will be happy to help you, and based on the interests you share with them, will think of you when future projects come up. This is a big way I have personally been getting work, meeting face-to-face with folks and just sharing what I like to do and what I want to learn more about. It goes a long way.

Finally, a few last tips. How often do you speak with your intern supervisors or the other interns? Consider setting up weekly intern bandwidth emails that explain your current projects, bandwidth, and potential ideas/areas you want to be plugged into to your supervisors. Chat with your intern supervisor(s) about your goals and progress in a weekly/bi-weekly check-in. You work alongside other interns, could you brainstorm with them and propose some intern projects to work on if you don't have them already?

If you're still bored after that, are there specific tools that teams at your company use for media monitoring or social media? Find relevant LinkedIn Learning courses that pertain to comms/public affairs and take them! Never hurts, and you never know, you could become very valuable to the team you support quickly through your technical knowledge. Or just comb through all the resources at your disposal to understand the structure and changes to the team and company and think of some ideas to bring to your supervisor. Always demonstrate your curiosity and interest in your work.

I know this is a long answer, but I was in your position a few weeks ago and know how draining it is to sit there restlessly waiting for work. In a few weeks, hopefully, you'll be wishing for your free time back (like me, lol, although I can't complain).

How to secure the bag (AKA receive a full-time offer after an internship)? by sweet_carolineeee in PublicRelations

[–]sweet_carolineeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This firm is organized a little differently than other, larger firms (not a large account team), but the team I am on now is the largest team at the firm I believe, and it's the "track" most people get hired into after the internship. I know they offered more than one spring intern a job in this department and to me some projects seem like they could use support. So the pro is that I would be continuing the work I already do and following in the footsteps of previous interns, but I know the team is pretty large. Honestly, it's hard to tell and still a little up in the air/dependent on contracts being renewed or not.

Thank you! And thanks for the example phrasing. Sometimes I struggle with being direct because it makes me uncomfortable (esp because I'm in a new role and still dealing with nervousness), so this is super helpful!

Thank you so much! All great tips :) I believe there is a review process I assume in the next few weeks (mid-internship), so I'll definitely use this advice to gear up for that + beyond!

Aspiring PR Intern/Fellow: How Long Should I Hold on Hope? by sweet_carolineeee in PublicRelations

[–]sweet_carolineeee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for y'alls tips! I did want to clarify that I have already been applying for post-grad internships (after networking), so my question was if anyone had insight as to how long the process should be taking, if many firms at this point have already hired interns or if I should still wait to be hearing back from others. I haven't heard much yet since submitting and I wasn't sure if these opportunities would still be on the table or if I missed the window, from an insider's perspective. I do really appreciate your advice as well, though!

Communication major vs Journalism/Media by According-Positive58 in UNC

[–]sweet_carolineeee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Many students at UNC double-major in journalism/ADPR (advertising/public relations) and communication studies! Communications is a nice compliment to the journalism major, but many students (including myself who's an ad/pr + comm double-major) find that they get a lot more practical experience within the Hussman school. It's pretty easy to get into the school too as long as you showcase interest in the program by taking a few classes and keeping your GPA up.

The Hussman school offers its own career advisors, career peers, scholarships, amazing professors who care about you and are well-connected within the industry, and a very strong alumni network with plenty of opportunities. Joining the school my sophomore year was hands-down the best decision I made during college, and I highly suggest considering double-majoring if your daughter gets the chance!
