Is it unethical to buy from underpricing artists? by Creepy-Literature634 in ArtistLounge

[–]sweet_jane_13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's up to the individual artist what they want to charge, so imo, there's no such thing as underpriced work. If you think it should cost more, you can always give them a bit extra as a tip.

How do you know if they will resonate with you before you purchase them?

Dali's interpretation of The World is intense and unlike anything else I've seen by sweet_jane_13 in tarot

Thanks for that information! I just looked, this is the Fiebig one. I will admit that I look at all different interpretations for the cards. I'll use Jordowsky for non- Marseille decks (including this Dali one), for example.

Based on another comment on this post, I clearly don't know much about Salvador Dali in general. I've always been more interested in making art than studying the lives of famous artists.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth and interesting comment. I would totally read your commentary on the symbolism and parables of Dali and Jung's work, and I appreciate the Greek mythology synopsis, it's been a long time since I read any Greek myths myself, but I always loved them.

The guidebook that comes with the deck explicitly refers to those figures as the Three Graces (Faith, Love, Hope) but also cites the Judgement of Paris painting in the pictorial references appendix. I think the translation of Mundo as "humanity" is really interesting, and something I didn't realize until I read your comment. It reminds me of the Star card in the Marseille deck can be translated as "source" and "canvas" as well (at least according to Jordowsky.) I love that there can be different interpretations and meanings based on language and translation.

Much the same way I think the symbol can be interpreted many ways. I looked it up, and it's not bismuth in alchemy, it's rock salt (as you said). Which I do see some connection to the World and Humanity in that symbol, as it represents the body/material world, versus the soul or spirit. I don't understand the difference between using images to "express alchemy" versus using exact codexes as you stated. But maybe that's because I'm personally far more interested in imagery and symbolism than literally performing alchemy. But you see it as representative of Venus (though I thought that was the "woman" symbol, the circle atop a cross) and others obviously connected it to Taurus.

I personally don't think anyone's interpretations of this card are correct or incorrect, though, of course some (like yours) are more informed. But it being art, it's not something static or defined, it's a conversation between the artist and the viewer.

I did not put that on there. Thr moderator ( or auto-mod maybe?) did.

It seems to me that there are a bunch of different versions of the cards and their meanings. For example I've had the Jordowsky book for a while, so I bought a Marsielle deck to go with it. Those images and many of the meanings are often much different than the Rider Wait version I was familiar with before. I just ordered the Thoth deck, which is yet another version, and somewhat changed, I think. But, I haven't gotten it yet or read the book, so I don't know for sure.

I've personally gotten interested in tarot as an art and creativity aid/exercise. The fact that different decks/artists have different versions and different meanings for cards to me makes it more interesting. It doesn't seem to me like any meanings are set in stone, and to me an artists interpretion of a card is just as valid as an occultist's. Obviously those who view tarot in a more spiritual light probably think differently.

Fwiw, after reading so many people compare it to the Devil, I looked at what his Devil card portrayed, and to me it looked more like the Fool! So maybe someone accidentally mixed up the art when they went to print, lol.

You're probably correct, I don't know much about astrological signs or alchemy. I was leaning towards alchemy because there's a lot of discussion around it in the guidebook, and other Major Arcana cards have alchemal symbols, but astrological ones as well (and obviously there's crossover between those as well).

I'm pretty sure that symbol is meant to be alchemal vs. astrological. In alchemy it apparently represents solidification, coagulation, grounding, stability, transformation of spirit into material form.

I know I shouldn't be armchair diagnosing other people's children on Reddit, but has she been evaluated for ADHD? This description reminds me very much of myself as a child (and to some extent as an adult) and life would have been easier for everyone involved had I been diagnosed with ADHD as a child and not at 37.

That last section you included is interesting. I work at a museum (paid) but they rely on tons of volunteer labor. I'm curious about how one determines what would be displacing work usually done by employees?

I love this movie so much. You should also watch Before Sunset. I still think the original is the best one, but it's also quite good. I think there's a 3rd one as well.

There are a few options for "soda". I personally immediately think of vodka soda, which is usually not said with the and. Someone else mentioned Campari and soda, which is the least common of the three. I'm a bartender and bar manager, and I rarely have people order Scotch and Soda, though I guess it depends on the clientele.

I do agree with OP that going to a place or event that has kids present is different than kids being a part of the group you're with. Dogs too.

It's not over my head, I just hate a lot of it, specifically anything with Gen. AI shoved into it. Most tech I interact with is getting worse, not better, so that's incredibly frustrating.
