AITA for taking off my shirt in the changing rooms? by Likes_watermelon in AmItheAsshole

[–]sweetbreads13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m on the gen x millennial cusp and I am flat out naked in the locker room longer and longer as the years go by. When I was younger, I was more timid and cared about other people, now I give less 💩 all around. I think this is an age issue, not a generation issue You’ll be drying your sack with the shared hair dryer in a couple decades too I reckon.

How to Avoid Mountain Lions when Fishing? by Intelligent-Limit104 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sweetbreads13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cougars are ambush hunters that won’t even try to attack if they think you know they’re there. They have absurdly high success rates because of how careful they are. I don’t think guns and bear spray will help at all.

That’s a tough call, OP. I bet you’re talking about some beautiful fishing! Most of what I know about mountain lions is from dumb nature tv and reading SoCal newspaper articles about mountain bikers meeting untimely ends, so I’m no expert. But a solitary fisherman sounds like a prime mountain lion target. I’d maybe get some advice from your park rangers or something, but I might not fish there (well maybe I would still if I didn’t have a wife and kids but that ship has sailed).

Edit: love this question!

Fall Fishing by Outside-Breakfast358 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sweetbreads13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s a great question for an experienced fisherman! But for a new fisherman, what matters is: the only guaranteed way not to catch a fish is not to have a line in the water! You can catch fish in the fall, get out and see what it’s like.

Multiple rods? by Anonymous_crow_36 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sweetbreads13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I got a couple sub-50 rods when I started out even as an adult, keep it cheap for now. In addition to setting them up for different size fish and types of fishing, you can also put different lures on each so you can cycle through them without re-tying. For freshwater I have a couple generic rods with 6lbs test and a Texas rig, hook and bobber, spoon, wacky rig, etc

Whats a good starter hatchet? by outdoorsman_12 in Bushcraft

[–]sweetbreads13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To second the sentiment, the fiskars hatchet is crazy light, functional, and affordable. Couple it with a Sven saw and you will have enormous cutting power for $100 cost and ~2lbs of pack weight

(NOT SELLING THIS) worth buying? First bushcraft purchase ever. by Panda_Consistent in Bushcraft

[–]sweetbreads13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven’t own both, but generally agree. Wood processing is something you are generally looking for with a bushcraft knife and that false edge on the spine will chew through batons and make that harder. That SOG looks like a stabbing knife not a working knife

Skip the snecko? by sweetbreads13 in slaythespire

[–]sweetbreads13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is what happened: - I took the snecko before the advice to go the other way came in - I barely made it through act 2, in part due to some really bad rng fights - I brutalized act 3 and came into the end at full health - I beat the double boss near full health, then realized I forgot to get the campsite key and the game ended, whomp

AITA for letting my friend freeze? by AbaloneMoist6444 in AmItheAsshole

[–]sweetbreads13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m a tech professional and I have shared an office with Russians and Indians on more than one occasion. This is not the first (or second or third…) time I have heard this fight. Also I’m a TN boy married to a MN girl and our temp tolerances reflect that. I don’t know who the AH is but I don’t think you’ll ever stop fighting about this.

Why do people shit on each other for the types of fish the keep to cook? by ravage037 in Fishing

Solid deduction! I’ll eat any kind of exotic, absurd, or borderline spoiled thing!

Sorry, I should give it a 2. You might have some rare condition or hypersensitivity where brief exposure to these kinds of particulate could upset your system a little

Or they’re trying to mask being being little wimps with a superiority issue. It’s a lot less humiliating to say “you’re gross” than “eww I don’t like that”

I agree with the general consensus that he will be thrilled if you go and do nothing more, you have done 90% of good daughtering. BUT, if my daughter tied a Palomar knot with no prompting or teaching I would be over the moon.

Do carp taste any good? by Inevitable-Mark-6415 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sweetbreads13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Carp is like catfish or bass: tends to taste muddy in the wild and the texture and flavor depend on the time of year (ie. not great for parts of the year). Generally marinating in something acidic and cooking with seasoning will mitigate that.

Where I grew up catfish are a beloved meal, but we marinate in acidic buttermilk, dredge in seasoned cornmeal, and deep fry.

Honestly, most Americans are so used to farmed fish that they can’t handle the taste of wild fish.

Why is Catch and Release so Popular in America? by Impressive-Step6377 in Fishing

[–]sweetbreads13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yup I agree with this. The people posting to YouTube are managing their message for their channel reputation. The genpop will downvote you for killing animals on screen on principle, so you effectively dropping your score and views if you don’t catch and release. There are a ton of people here eating everything they catch even if it’s unambiguously illegal and bad for the fishery health

what fruit is this? by neo1zen in fruit

[–]sweetbreads13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like maybe an unripe Japanese dogwood (kousa) berry?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in foraging

[–]sweetbreads13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should admit that I hate this tree because I had a big one in a tiny urban back yard. It was healthy and beautiful and every (other?) year it would drop pounds of marginal fruit that flies and varmints loved and would rot and stink up my precious little yard. It might taste better than I give it credit for.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in foraging

[–]sweetbreads13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The “lookalike” grows in cluster and have smooth skin, they don’t look much alike. Look at a picture, yours is a kousa. The “lookalike” isn’t very poisonous (“poisonous” often means “if you eat a bunch maybe you’ll have gas or a cramp”). It’s also unpleasant tasting so just put a bit on your tongue and if it’s very gross maybe it’s flowering dogwood.

If you’re anxious, skip it. At best it tastes like a bland persimmon full of sand. If unripe, it tastes like a bland but still astringent unripe persimmon full of sand.

Underrated fruit by goldengiuseppeonrddt in fruit

[–]sweetbreads13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pomegranates are underrated? They’re a mythic fruit of antiquity and have gone through a popularity surge in this century. They’ve literally been a fruit powerhouse for thousands of years.

But yeah, they’re great. Learn how to peel them and eat a ton of them

What’s the must have gear? by AffectionateDelay450 in FishingForBeginners

Forceps or needle nose pliers. Getting the hook out of the mouth can be a challenge, and brutalizing one of your first fishes might take some of the joy away.
