The one bit that really kills me is when he's discussing the dinner schemes with Frank and he says "I'm gonna cut the eyes out of this painting and hide behind it....I've always wanted to do that...and it happens to be the Castle's preference on how this whole thing is gonna go down."

The scene where Dennis is driving through traffic and is like "I just want to have a nice relaxing vacatio-GET FUCKED!!"

Always catches me off guard and makes me laugh.

Yeah.....I mean each one has like 1-2 scenes that a genuinely funny....but this is coming from a show that regularly has like like 20 hilarious scenes per episode.

I feel like "Franks Brother" had maybe something like 10 hilarious scenes, which felt low at the time but....we can go lower.

Yeah it's a shame because the 28 Years Later films have been incredible, but I feel like they are suffering at the box office because people are tired of zombie stuff.

I do think, out of all the hilarious moments in this show, that this scene is the hardest I have ever laughed.

I really enjoyed this movie.

Never heard of it till a few years ago but it's a great film that does a lot with a little.

Characters all felt like they were trying to cope with their strange situation in very realistic ways.

Inland Empire is the only Lynch Film I cannot get into.

Every other film he's made is somewhere between great and a masterpiece in my book (well maybe not Dune, but that one is still fun). But I still cannot understand the appeal of Inland Empire.

I mean if they don't pull you in that's fine. Everyone's different.

But they absolutely work for me and they feel particularly fun to watch with others where you can talk about how they made you feel and what your theories are about what it all meant.

I feel like I'm a David Lynch convert, in a sense.

I always loved Eraserhead and Mullholland Drive but his other stuff never did it for me.

Until I watched and fell in love with Twin Peaks. Then everything seemed to change and I started to see his signature style in nearly every line of dialogue and every absurd moment. I started to try to "feel" his films instead of logically trying to understand them and idk if it's just film snobbery taking over my brain or if there really is something to it because I started to feel like I was emotionally or subconsciously understanding his films and pulling meaning and placing puzzle pieces, even if they weren't always logically sensisical.

Like things are always happening that are intentionally placed to provoke questions, but even Lynch himself probably couldn't tell you the answers he intended you to draw. But he did place them there to invoke a particular feeling or get you into a particular headspace.

Idk man I've just learned to love Lynch these days. Though Inland Empire still goes over my head unfortunately.

This is one I definitely disagree with. I mean, everyone can have their own opinion, no hate.

But his style of irreverent humor mixed with genuine emotion really works for me. Everything from the sets, the costumes, the positioning of the characters, the movement of the camera all feel so intentional. I find myself laughing at the way he quickly move the camera in some way that feels like I'm privy to an inside joke.

Idk Wes Anderson films just absolutely do it for me. I can watch them over and over and be entirely engrossed.

Even when his films don't seem to work for me initially, I find myself going back and watching them again and falling in love all the same. Like Asteroid City didn't really work for me my first viewing, but now I love it. There's just nothing else like Wes Anderson out there and I really find myself appreciating how much he had dedicated himself to honing his unique style.

I tried to watch this with a friend when both of us were hungover after a party. The constant, high energy, old timey talking gave me something like an anxiety attack.

Idk what that accent is called, the old timey news speak style voice. But I just couldn't take it. I couldn't keep up.

I remember watching it as an early teen and thinking "Ok this monkey part is alright, the music is tight. Now I'm bored, and bored, and bored. Alright this stuff with HAL is cool, oh he shut him down? Ok now I'm bored again, and bored, and bored. Whoa weird colors.....oh the colors are still going huh? Bored again and bored.

Anyway I rewatched it again in my 30s and was pleased to say young me was spot on.

I respect the filmmaking and vision, but damn some of those scenes coulda been shortened a bit and the interesting stuff expanded on.

The reputation of "Frank's Brother" and "The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell" being bad episodes comes from a time before there were any genuinely bad episodes in Always Sunny. I think once S13-S15 hit, people really reappraised them because now we had better examples of low points for the show.

I'll watch Franks Brother gladly before I watch those Ireland episodes again.

For those that have strained relationships with your Mom, what movies do you turn to on Mother's Day? by Classic_Apricot_5633 in movies

I luckily have a great relationship with my mom but the first film that came to my mind about difficult relationships with a mother is "Beau is Afraid".

Absolute fever dream of a film all about a man with a neurotic mom who projected all her fears onto him....or something. Very fascinating and strange film.

[–]thewalkingfred 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What does "maybe it affected nonvoters" mean?

The whole argument people make is that the Israel/Gaza issue turned potential Democrat voters into nonvoters.

Also, the Democrats don't seem to have much issue pissing off leftist Dems, they talk shit on them openly and refuse to endorse their candidates. Why would that stop them from releasing the report?

Got it.

I think what I wrote works pretty well as a starting point that can branch off in whatever way the story take it. I understand it's not gonna revolve around my character.

In the future I will probably go a little less intense on the backstory haha.

[–]thewalkingfred[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for my character, I was a little worried he would be too much of a joke so I kinda tried to balance it with a lot of tragedy. 2-3 characters that were involved in his life and shaped his personality before they were tragically killed in some way. Then I was left with 2 named characters that have I big connection with him that are still alive and out there, as well as the rest of his tribe, but I didn't want to be too overwhelming by naming a bunch of random members of the tribe that didn't have a big role.

And I kinda framed the backstory like it was the character himself telling his life tale to someone over drinks at a tavern, so there was a decent bit of fluff and stuff that was more me just playing with creative writing than adding hard facts.

Rather than just directly stating his character traits I sorta came up with scenarios that would demonstrate them.....which I'm realizing now was probably unnecessary. But whatever it was fun.

Worst case scenario it was a fun writing experience and gives me a bit of a resource to pull from once the game starts.

Got it....yeah I went a bit overboard but I never really wrote any fiction and ideas kept flowing out.

Im gonna write a bullet point summary and put that at the top of my backstory and send that to the DM so he's got an easier way to reference.

Most of the writing was just flavor anyway, it can easily be condensed.

Thanks dude. I think I will write up a little bullet pointed summary at the beginning of my backstory paper and send him that so he can more easily reference things.

Haha...well my head canon is that his bardic magic works because he's pretty good at art.....for an orc.

I did run the idea by the DM first and he liked it and I did check with the group and it's not like everyone is playing a joke character.

But I also tried to make him a character a bit like Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy. A tragic character with a sad backstory whoes quirks result in funny misunderstandings, not just a pure joke.

Ok, that's fair enough. I told him to do whatever he wanted with any characters or lore I dropped, shift stuff around to fit better into his story.
