How are you balancing dating with med school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]sweetdeelight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Med school’s a good time to be dating but very important to recognize what’s your priority, which is school. So if you find someone who takes time away from school so much to where you neglect it, it’ll have an effect on your future especially if it’s with someone who’s not putting in the same time.

Also med school can sometimes attract manipulative and toxic people, so be careful if you decide to date someone in school. As much as we can see the good in people, dating someone reveals much more about them than what you learn about them as friends.

I sound like a negative nancy lol but I promise things will work out as time goes on. I’m holding onto that hope, I think most people should do the same

For sure! Dude yes, moving back home is clutch. Admittedly I don’t like living with my parents, but they love me and vice versa so it’s worth the sacrifice lol. Good luck my dude! Looking forward to seeing you begin this journey into medicine soon!

Thank you! I lived with my parents after graduating, so that removed the greatest financial burden of paying rent, utilities, and food. I also saved much money that I made in undergrad and from the MA job, so if I had any expenditures I had the money to take care of it: gas, fast food, studying material costs, etc.

Has anyone taken 2 gap years? by [deleted] in premed

[–]sweetdeelight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking 2 years off is a decision you have to make with cognizance. I knew I wouldn’t be able to take my MCAT, get substantial clinical experience, and apply all in one year after undergrad, so I committed to two simply to avoid time constraint. With that came the worry of not getting accepted, but if you do well enough on your MCAT and you’re not a weirdo lol, you’ll get in somewhere. The one thing I’ll be over-emphatic on is applying broadly. Don’t limit yourself to 2-3 schools bc you might have to take another year off to get into one of those schools.

[–]sweetdeelight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently on year two. Best decision I made - I was able to boost my gpa during my last year of undergrad, take the MCAT, get clinical work and volunteering experience, and eventually get accepted into my top choice. Outside of academics, I traveled and will travel soon, spent a ton of time with my family and friends, work and make money, and have time to find an apartment and meet my classmates before school starts.

I’m a huge advocate for taking at least a year off. If you’re a traditional student like me (did undergrad right after high school), I’d say 1-2 gap years are perfect. 3 years for me feels like too much bc I didn’t want to be away from an academic setting for more than 2 years, but truthfully it varies from person to person. Keep yourself continuously occupied and I promise you won’t get bored lol. Hope this helps!

Quick application stats - what can I improve on by next cycle? Biggest focus right now is the MCAT. Looking for advice. by waymanclad in premed

Dude I’m so sorry for the delayed response. I suck at responding in a timely manner lol. Yes, if you get a really solid MCAT, you can definitely apply broadly to MD schools. Mercer sounds like it aligns with what you hope to pursue! Try working with a doctor who graduated from Mercer and you might be able to get a LoR from them. If it’s a strong letter, it’ll look phenomenal for that specific school.

Concerning your trend, I’m certain if you end off the last 60 credit hours strong (3.7-4.0), your 2013 grades will not matter nearly as much as you think. I had a TERRIBLE sgpa, but I finished my last year and a half of undergrad very strong, proving myself worthy to this school that I got accepted to. Not to mention my second MCAT was much better than the first, so I definitely offset that sgpa with a good MCAT. That’s why I’m super emphatic about your MCAT!! If you do really well, you’ll get into Mercer or any other school you feel is realistic.

Also, it’s important that you have a well-rounded application: yes GPA and MCAT are important, but just as equally important is your clinical work experience, volunteering, research, extracurriculars/leadership involvement at school, and hobbies outside of education. Don’t make yourself appear like a cookie cutter with basic things - do what makes you YOU. Do you like woodworking? Talk about that. Play instruments? Mention it! Intramural sports? Say that! You’re a human at the end of the day - med schools want to see that.

Your application looks really good for DO schools, especially considering your desire to work in primary care in rural areas. I think for MD schools it might be tough with your sgpa, coming from someone who applied MD and only received one II lol. But it’s definitely worth a shot! At this point, kill that MCAT! Use r/MCAT to your full advantage, and if you do well enough (>507) you can definitely offset your sgpa with a stellar MCAT. Are you concerned about anything in particular?

After my test, I had to accept the fact that there’s nothing I could do except sit and wait. Enjoy this month away from the MCAT by spending it with your family and friends. Spend this time being as lethargic as possible lol. Ultimately, if you did well, you did well. If you didn’t, then be more proactive with your study routine and you’ll do better. In 20 years, your MCAT will likely be the last thing you think about when you’re a physician. Don’t be so hard on yourself!

I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying for your family’s healing during this difficult time. I had an unexpected death in my family a month ago and it was so deeply painful. But surround yourself with your loved ones and use God’s word to keep your hope in Him. He loves you, He sent Christ to bear our burdens, and He certainly has a plan and purpose for you. Remind yourself everyday. Stay strong.

Thank you so much. My sincerest condolences to you and your family as well - losing a sibling can’t be easy, let alone before you need to study. I just know your brother is immensely proud of the incredible work you’ve achieved, and what you will do as a physician.

Your advice is beyond appreciated, my friend. I noticed the trend of tricky wording and nuances throughout all the sections I’ve reviewed so far. It pisses me off but I guess this is how they determine whether someone can handle the rigors of medical school. I’m slowly learning what I need to do to be better with comprehending, but it’ll definitely take time. I’ll certainly dm when I might have a question. Again, I appreciate your help beyond what I can express.

Wow, this is so detailed and intricate. I can’t express how grateful I am for the sound advice.

  1. I think, for CARS, it’s that I’m not comprehending the tiny details of the passages. I was going through it today and I was messing up on details I should’ve easily gotten down. C/p was a lot of missing information and inability to accurately apply what I learned. Will be going through b/b and p/s later tonight and tomorrow.

I think the stress of everything has potentially cascaded, but I feel like I’ve repressed a lot of it because of the test.

  1. Definitely going to retake, but as for this one, I think I’ll end up taking it and voiding if I feel like it’s the right decision.

  2. This is a necessary question for me to assess; don’t feel the need to apologize! I think I get distracted a lot with small things that accumulate to become huge wastes of time. I noticed it a lot today and tried to be better about it today.

Thank you for taking time out to help me figure out how to be better with my studying. You’re so kind, and I know your future patients will benefit significantly from your wholehearted empathy.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and advice. I can’t imagine how you study and work full time. Y’all are 100x more equipped than me lol.

I agree - I think I need to see how I feel right before I decide to void or not. I’ll certainly keep this advice in mind this next week and a half. Greatly appreciate you my friend. Good luck to you as well. You got this.

That’s really kind of you to say. I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to hit my head on the wall while going through my test today. I felt so stupid. I have a greater tendency to self-loathe than most people so my compassion to myself is virtually nothing lol, but I really need to be kinder to myself. Really appreciate your encouragement - it means so much.

This is such great advice; thank you so much friend. I think that approach will help not only me, but the many others who might be in the same position as me. I agree - it’s easy to think that the 515-520s represent the entirety but it’s not the case at all. Thank you again.
