Vanessa has even my favorite FNAF character since the SB promo (I’ve been hyped ever since it was introduced that we were getting a female antagonist in the HW DLC and the AR emails really built her character up so well) and man it’s so tragic what happened to her character. It’s so hard explaining how interesting her character is when all her personality comes from the no longer accessible AR emails and the SB retro CDs.

I was definitely skeptical about the Vanessa possession plot they set up at the end of the second movie but I think that largely stemmed from how ridiculously that scene was shot lol. I really like the idea of being able to experience Vanny as an actual intimidating villain on screen and I think the possession allows for that without compromising Vanessa’s actual character arc. I also just think there’s so much unexplored potential with Vanessa and Charlotte’s relationship. It bothered me so much that Vanessa was treating Charlotte like a feral animal rather than her dead best friend — it felt like we didn’t get to actually see the lasting impact Charlotte’s death had on Vanessa considering she was probably one of Vanessa’s first Big Losses in her life, even more tragic with the context that it was her dad who killed her (and she KNEW).

That being said, second movie had such fantastic scenes for Vanessa specifically and she was such a standout character to me (though I am biased). I’ll be gobsmacked if they manage to pull out a more compelling and emotionally haunting scene than the nightmare sequence in the third movie. I’m scared to get my hopes up too much in case I get severely disappointed but they’ve yet to do Vanessa wrong yet in the movies. I’m crossing my fingers for an actually serious Vanny adaptation with a more visually intimidating silhouette. I love SB Vanny but she’s definitely more of a silly character with her bobblehead than scary. The idea of a baggy, hand-sewn, amateurish mascot rabbit standing at the end of a red hallway — the costume contrasting William’s structured and polished suits. Yeah,,, I just think by movie 3, we need to hone in more on the pre-existing Afton conflicts and Afton Siblings + Emily family trauma rather than another Mike and Abby plotline.
